Dodgers 3B Max Muncy (knee) set to undergo MRI
July 4 - Los Angeles Dodgers placed third baseman Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list on Thursday because of bruised left knee after he was injured during Wednesday's win against the Chicago White Sox. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Muncy departed after a collision while tagging out Chicago's Michael A. Taylor on a stolen-base attempt in the sixth inning. The play immediately preceded Clayton Kershaw's 3,000th career strikeout. Taylor also left the game with a contusion on the back of his left shoulder. Muncy, 34, is batting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs in 81 games. He was a Phase 2 finalist for a starting spot in the All-Star Game but lost out to the San Diego Padres' Manny Machado. In 10 major league seasons, eight of which have been with the Dodgers, Muncy is a two-time All-Star and a career .230 hitter with 208 home runs and 592 RBIs. His 203 home runs with the Dodgers are tied for seventh all-time in franchise history with Matt Kemp. Duke Snider leads the franchise with 389 home runs and Eric Karros is the all-time leader in its Los Angeles tenure with 270. Ruiz, 26, is a career .243 hitter with seven home runs and 57 RBIs in 178 games for the San Diego Padres (2022), Milwaukee Brewers (2022) and Athletics (2023-24). In 2023, he led the American League in steals with 67. The Dodgers obtained him in an April 2 trade with the Athletics for minor league right-hander Carlos Duran. Ruiz was batting .292 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and 38 stolen bases in 44 attempts over 66 games with Oklahoma City. The Dodgers also designated outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment and claimed infielder CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees. Berroa, 26, was purchased by the Dodgers from the Toronto Blue Jays on May 12 and has not appeared in a game for Los Angeles. He played in 28 games for the Blue Jays in 2024 and hit .189 (7-for-37). Alexander, 28, did not get into a game for the Yankees. He has played 10 major league games, including six for the Athletics earlier this season, and batted .160 (4-for-25). --Field Level Media

Max Muncy heads to IL with what Dodgers are calling a left knee bone bruise
Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy grimaces as he holds his left knee after colliding with Michael Taylor of the White Sox after he tagged Taylor out trying to steal third in the sixth inning of Wednesday's game. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times) The Dodgers will be without Max Muncy after the third baseman was placed on the injured list Thursday with what the team is calling a bone bruise in his left knee. Muncy was injured in the sixth inning of Wednesday's walk-off win over the Chicago White Sox when Chicago's Michael Taylor slid headfirst into third on an unsuccessful attempt to steal third base. The Dodgers now have 13 players on the injured list. Advertisement Taylor's helmet hit Muncy's knee, bending it sideways and flipping the infielder to the ground. The collision was so gruesome, SportsNet LA, which was broadcasting the game, did not show replays. Muncy writhed on the ground in obvious pain before being helped to the clubhouse. Taylor also left the game with a shoulder contusion. The White Sox have listed his status as day to day. Read more: 'Super grateful' Clayton Kershaw, Dodger teammates bask in glow of 3,000th strikeout Muncy's place on the roster was taken by outfielder Esteury Ruiz, who was acquired on April 2 from the Athletics in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran. Ruiz appeared in 66 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .292 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and 38 stolen bases. Advertisement Muncy's absence will leave a big hole in the Dodgers' lineup. He led the team with a .333 average and 24 RBIs in June, when he matched Shohei Ohtani for the lead in home runs with seven. He is hitting .250/.375/.457 for the season and is third on the team with 55 RBIs. 'He's huge,' pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who was on the mound when the injury happened, said of Muncy. 'I don't really know why he stole there. It just seemed unnecessary. We're all holding our breath that Munc is going to be OK. 'He's obviously a huge part of our team, especially the last two months.' Michael Taylor's helmet collided with Max Muncy's left knee on his unsuccessful attempt to steal third base, injuring Muncy in the process. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times) Miguel Rojas, who hasn't played since injuring his left hand on an attempted steal Sunday, started at third base Thursday. Kiké Hernández, who took Muncy's place Wednesday, is also likely to see some time at third in Muncy's absence. Dodgers' Muncy On Injured List With Knee Bruise After Collision With White Sox's Taylor
Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy went on the injured list Thursday with a left knee bone bruise. He left in the sixth inning Wednesday night after a collision with Chicago White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor, who was attempting a steal. Muncy took a throw from catcher Will Smith and tagged out Taylor. Muncy sprawled on his back as a Dodgers trainer came out to check on him. He had to be helped off the field and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg. A White Sox trainer checked on Taylor, who sustained a bruised back and left the game. The incident occurred just before Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw got his 3,000th career strikeout against Vinny Capra to end the inning. Muncy is hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 81 games this season. The Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he batted .292 with eight homers, 37 RBI, and 38 stolen bases in 66 games. He was acquired in April from the Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Carlos Duran after being designated for assignment on March 30.

Dodgers' Max Muncy expects to miss 6 weeks with bone bruise
Max Muncy spent months tuning out and defusing unfounded speculation about his standing and the Los Angeles Dodgers' position at third base. He quelled that chatter with his bat, surging as one of the best hitters in the sport in May after trying on glasses, staking his claim to be an All-Star for the third time in his career. Now, after a collision with a sliding Michael A. Taylor twisted his left knee on Wednesday night, all of that remains up in the air once again. Advertisement The Dodgers placed Muncy on the injured list on Thursday afternoon after the 34-year-old third baseman spent the morning in an MRI tube. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters at Dodger Stadium on Thursday that those tests revealed a bone bruise, knocking Muncy out for an estimated six weeks. 'It was tough news, but it was also great news,' Muncy told reporters. 'When you look at the play and what could have happened, we got possibly the best-case scenario.' The organization recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz to take Muncy's spot on the active roster, a part-time solution as the Dodgers will have to spend the next month before the July 31 trade deadline finalizing how they will handle the position in Muncy's stead. Max Muncy said he's looking at about six weeks out with the injury, which is about best case scenario considering how it looked at the time. — Rowan Kavner (@RowanKavner) July 3, 2025 Kiké Hernández is the likely internal option, filling the same kind of role he did last summer when Muncy missed several months with a strained oblique and displaced rib. Hernández has a .652 OPS on the season and is largely on the roster for his versatility; keeping him to one position could open up some playing opportunities for Korean rookie Hyeseong Kim at second base and center field, and could lead to Miguel Rojas expanding his duties from his current part-time role. The Dodgers also have top infield prospect Alex Freeland, who has an .836 OPS in 360 plate appearances this season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, with 10 of his 75 starts coming at third base. Freeland was recently dealing with a thumb issue and isn't on the 40-man roster, which could be the reason why Los Angeles opted to bring up Ruiz instead in the short term. The organization is already expecting somewhat of a roster crunch in the coming weeks along with the deadline, with Tyler Glasnow on a rehab assignment and Blake Snell and Blake Treinen now both back to facing hitters. Los Angeles also added another infielder to their 40-man roster on Thursday, claiming CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees. The Dodgers claimed IF CJ Alexander from the New York Yankees and designated OF Steward Berroa for assignment. — Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) July 3, 2025 If he were to miss more time, Muncy's absence could also fuel speculation once again that the Dodgers could seek to add a third baseman at the deadline. Nolan Arenado's desire to play in Los Angeles is well-known throughout the industry, though the Dodgers never engaged in serious trade talks for the eight-time All-Star. The 34-year-old's offensive decline has continued, with his OPS+ dropping from 151 in his top-three MVP finish in 2022 to 108 in 2023, 101 in 2022, and below league average at a 95 OPS+ in 333 plate appearances this season. Advertisement Taking on that kind of salary for Arenado through 2026 — rather than Muncy's much more palatable $10 million club option for next season — is among the several considerations that could shift dramatically should Muncy's absence be shorter than originally anticipated. Given how gruesome the injury initially looked, that would be seen as a win for the Dodgers. Two other third basemen who could be available at the deadline — Arizona's Eugenio Suárez and Colorado's Ryan McMahon — both share a division with the Dodgers, potentially souring any chance of a deal. The Dodgers originally acquired Ruiz in April, hoping to tap into the unique skill set that the 2023 American League stolen base leader possesses. Ruiz has continued to put up strong exit velocities in the Dodgers' system, and paired that with results down in the minor leagues. Through 300 plate appearances with Oklahoma City, he has hit .292 with an .852 OPS to go with eight home runs and 38 stolen bases.
