Brendan Rodgers gives Celtic injury update on Jota and Schmeichel

Jota is out until 2026 due to an ACL injury but took a break from rehab to visit the team's training base in Portugal this week. Rodgers said the 26-year-old winger is making good progress, but has a "long road ahead of him." He said: "Yes, he's coming along really well. "I think we obviously sent him back to assess his fitness here and be with his family. "I think the first 12 weeks of that injury, it's important that you get to a point where you can, in the nine to 12 weeks, that you're able to straighten it. "So he can do that. "He was in the gym. "So yes, he's coming along well. "Long, long way to go. "But it's good to see him." As for Schmeichel, who missed the friendly against Estrela Da Amadora, Rodgers expects him to be fit for the next game against Sporting Lisbon. He said: "He missed today, and then be available for the next game."

Adam Idah goal isn't enough as Celtic fall to shock pre-season friendly defeat

Adam Idah found the net for Celtic on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Scottish champions from falling to a shock 3-2 defeat to Estrela Da Amadora. The Bhoys' opponents play in the Portuguese top-flight, but they were only founded five years ago - in place of the original club that went bankrupt in 2011 - and they finished 15th in the 18-team division last season. It took them just three seasons to climb from the third tier to the Primeira Liga. Celtic struck first on Saturday through Reo Hatate in the seventh minute, but they were behind by the half-time break, thanks to goals from Alan Godoy (37 minutes) and Otávio (44 minutes). Ireland striker Idah made it 2-2 just eight minutes after the restart, but Estrela struck the winner with 25 minutes to go through Jovane Cabral, when they broke and created a three-on-one with Ireland defender Liam Scales. Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers reacted to the defeat, saying: 'It was a really good exercise for us. We're only a couple of weeks in and there were some good moments, some not so good, young players getting opportunities, some players playing their first minutes of pre-season. 'We'll get sharper. The guys have had a heavy week, so they were maybe a wee bit leggy today. 'But it's that point in the season where you have to push and get through that, that's all about building your fitness. 'We had some really good moments, the goals were excellent. And then we got caught out, especially in the third goal, just pressing at the wrong moment. 'But all that comes with the evolution and understanding of how we play.'

Celtic take 'another step forward' despite friendly defeat

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is taking the positives from his side's friendly defeat by Estrela da Amadora. Defender Kieran Tierney made his first appearance since returning to the club while winger Benjamin Nygren got his first minutes in a Celtic shirt. Despite goals from Reo Hatate and Adam Idah, the Parkhead club were beaten 3-2 in Portugal. "We're only a couple of weeks in and there were some good moments," Rodgers told Celtic TV, external."Some not so good, some young players getting opportunities, some players playing their first minutes of pre-season. It's another step towards where we want to get to."We'll get sharper. The guys have had a heavy week, so they were maybe a wee bit leggy today."But it's that point in the season where you have to push and get through that, that's all about building your fitness.'The guys will always look to play our game model, to press and to play, and we did that.'"We had some really good moments, the goals were excellent. And then we got caught out, especially in the third goal, just pressing at the wrong moment."But all that comes with the evolution and understanding of how we play."

Brendan Rodgers is clear on the Celtic transfers that must be completed amid Yamada and Balikwisha surge

After the 3-2 defeat to Estrela Da Amadora in Lisbon the boss laid out his plan Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic are working hard behind the scenes to get more transfers over the line. The Hoops are closing in on the £1.5million signing of Kawasaki Frontale striker Shin Yamada. ‌ And Rodgers also has a couple of wingers on his wishlist in the wake of Nicolas Kuhn's £17million move to Como. ‌ He said: "I think there's work going on behind the scenes. It's clear we need to improve the squad. A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, there are loads of names floating about." Royal Antwerp wide man Michel Ange-Balikwisha has been heavily linked and the boss admits firepower is a necessity. Rodgers said: "I think the positions you've mentioned, we're clear that we need to improve our frontline. "We lost Kyogo in January and another player with Nicolas gone. That's a lot of goals that's gone out of the team. "So for us, we need to strengthen that area of the field. But the guys back home are working hard on that." Kieran Tierney made his long-awaited second debut as the Hoops fell to a 3-2 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat against Estrela Da Amadora in Lisbon. ‌ Having lost Greg Taylor over the summer, Celts are in the market for cover at left-back. Japanese defender Hayato Inamura has been the surprise package in pre-season and Rodgers admits he'll continue casting an eye before dipping into the market. ‌ He said: "The pre-season is always to assess. We know the model here at the club is always to improve them. "Sometimes that means they come in and you assess and look, and look to see what's right for the development of them and the team. "That's what I'm about, getting a collection of individual players that I can see development and improvement in. ‌ "If they are going to be close to the first-team, they'll stay and do that. If not, we may feel they need to go out. "Ina's that example. I just wanted to get the chance to see him and we'll continue to do that. "But we know in the background that if we need to move on that position, that if we need to move on that position, that's something that we will be ready to do." ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season.
