Contempt petition filed in Madras High Court against Tamil Nadu Government for failing to start RTE admissions

Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam president V. Eswaran has filed a contempt petition in the Madras High Court against the Tamil Nadu government for not commencing admissions under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act for the academic year 2025–26, despite a recent High Court order. The High Court directed the State government on June 10 to reimburse private schools for RTE admissions and observed that non-receipt of funds from the Centre cannot be used as a reason to delay its statutory obligation. The court also asked the Union Ministry of Education to consider delinking the RTE component from issues related to the National Education Policy. Following the ruling, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi recently said the State would approach the Supreme Court by filing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) over the order. In response, Mr. Eswaran said he had filed a caveat petition in the Supreme Court to ensure the matter was not decided without hearing his side. He said the continued delay in opening the RTE admission portal had prompted the contempt plea. 'The State cannot keep six lakh underprivileged children waiting while it decides whether or not to follow a court order,' he said.

Eswaran and Syakir impress coach in Dalian

KUALA LUMPUR: Forward Eswaran George and defender Nor Syakir Saini impressed coach Nor Saiful Zaini during the national junior hockey team's recent playing tour to Dalian City, China. The team, preparing for the Junior World Cup (JWC) in India from Nov 28-Dec 10, played six friendlies with the Liaoning Province team coached by former South Korean coach Kim Sang Ryul. Thirty-two national juniors have been training under Saiful since last month. Saiful said that Eswaran and Syakir captured his heart with their performances in the friendly matches. "The duo have shown maturity in their game and they deserve to be in the Junior World Cup squad," said Saiful. Eswaran made his Malaysia debut in the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2023. Syakir has received his first national call-up. Saiful said he took 24 juniors to Dalian City, but only half of the team showed the ability to play matches while the others were inexperienced. Saiful's team will compete in the Murugappa Gold Cup in Chennai, India, from July 10-20. "We will be playing against clubs in the tournament. The players need as much exposure as they can to prepare for the JWC."

NGT should constitute committee to monitor saplings planted, says Eswaran of Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) should constitute a committee to monitor planting and nurturing of saplings in compensation for trees cut for infrastructure projects in the State, said Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam coordinator V. Eswaran. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) cut 2,239 trees for the Coimbatore - Pollachi road project and it had to plant almost 23,000 saplings in compensation. According to information gathered through Right to Information (RTI) Act, the NHAI planted the saplings through the District Rural Development Agency in eight panchayats at Kinathukadavu, Pollachi North, Pollachi South, and Annamalai. The NHAI earned ₹ 33.21 lakh from the trees felled for the project. Since adequate information was not available from all the eight panchayats, Mr. Eswaran and his team visited two panchayats on June 26, 2025 and found that just about 100 of the 2,000 odd saplings that were planted had survived. Mr. Eswaran said the NGT should take suo moto action on the NHAI and officials for not ensuring that the saplings planted had grown into trees. Nearly 4,351 trees were cut for the Chengapalli - Walayar road project and 13,000 saplings had to be planted. However, only 6,000 were planted, he added. With regard to the Pollachi road project, the panchayats claim that large amount of money was spent to maintain the saplings. But, the survival rate of the saplings is poor. This is because no one has taken the effort or care to maintain the saplings. This defeats the Supreme Court and High Court orders on planting saplings in compensation for trees cut for road projects. Mr. Eswaran submitted a letter to Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar demanding action on the NHAI officials and the road contractor and also to ensure that enough saplings were planted in compensation to the trees cut for the Pollachi road project.

Malaysian couple on Forbes Asia list

Published on: Friday, June 13, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 13, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Eswaran and Renuga had not expected to make it on the Forbes list. (Andrea Edmonds) PETALING JAYA: Eswaran Mohan and Renuga Nair have joined the ranks of fellow Malaysians like professional squash player Sivasangari Subramaniam; Lee Zhe Xi, co-founder of Eat and Cook; and Raudhan Nazran, founder of the social enterprise Accelerate Global, who have all made the Forbes list in previous years. They were Asia's first official Snapchat lens creators, and among the first 30 globally. Through their company Exar Technologies, they have helped put Malaysia on the (virtual) map. Advertisement 'The recognition means a lot to us – reinforcing the belief we had in ourselves. Sometimes when you are in your own world, you feel a bit demotivated. When you get recognised, you start reinforcing your belief that you are on the right path,' said Eswaran. For Renuga, the recognition was 'a confidence boost' in the midst of hardship and business slowing down. 'This makes you go, 'You know what? Let's just keep going'.' Since launching Exar Technologies in 2018, Eswaran and Renuga have levelled up in every way, together with their creative director Arun Mohan, Eswaran's younger brother. What started as a passion for creating augmented-reality (AR) filters for social media has now evolved into a full-blown immersive tech-solutions agency. 'We integrate these technologies to be able to create interactive content for you to boost engagement awareness for marketing campaigns,' Eswaran explained. Some of their clients include multinationals such as Nestlé, Fujitsu, Honda and FoodPanda. Eswaran and Renuga, who met while studying at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor, attribute their success to each other, saying they keep each other accountable for their work while challenging and spurring each other on. 'You need someone who believes in you more than yourself,' said Eswaran, an electrical-mechatronics graduate. He shared that during tough times when he gets discouraged, Renuga is his pillar of support. Indeed, through many ups and downs, they have stuck to a piece of advice someone close to them once offered. 'This person told us, 'Life has a lot of junctions, but you need to go to the junction to make the next decision. So, why don't you go to the junction first and then decide?'' added Renuga, a chemistry graduate. We still talk about this whenever we need to make decisions.' Their advice to young dreamers in the tech space? 'Make use of whatever you already have. If you're waiting for something to happen, especially today with so many tools available, you don't have any reason not to start,' said Eswaran. As for the future, the husband and wife hope to build their own media company to create more awareness about AR, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. 'We are very much excited to keep going in this industry instead of branching out into other technologies because we love this. This is what excites us all the time,' said Eswaran. 'My belief is that if you're going to spend time doing something, you might as well do something you like,' Renuga concluded. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? One car to check for cops, one to carry ganja; NCB traps both

Chennai: They split into two teams. One drove ahead in an SUV to check for police checks. The other followed hours later in a sedan, boot packed with 107 kg of ganja. However, the Narcotics Control Bureau laid traps at both ends—Chennai's outskirts near Red Hills at night, and Athur the next morning—and caught all five gangsters within 12 hours. The case began with a tip-off received by NCB intelligence officer Jitendra Pratap Singh on January 7, 2019. Acting swiftly, a team intercepted the SUV near Karanodai toll plaza. Although no contraband was found in the vehicle, its three occupants—Eswaran, Jayachandran, and Jayaprabhu—admitted they were escorting another vehicle loaded with ganja. They were taken to the NCB office, and their statements led officials to the second car—a sedan—expected to cross Athur toll plaza the next morning. At 10.10am on Jan 8, the sedan was stopped. Inside the boot were 50 yellow polythene packets. Field tests confirmed they contained ganja. The total seizure weighed 107 kg. The other two accused—Surulivel and Ramesh—were arrested on the spot. All five were charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for trafficking commercial quantity ganja. On May 29, Principal Special Judge S Hermies sentenced all five men to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each and fined them 2 lakh apiece. The court ruled that both vehicles were part of a coordinated smuggling plan—one car testing the road, the other carrying the load. The court overruled minor procedural lapses, stating they did not affect the evidentiary chain. Both vehicles, five mobile phones, 21,100 in cash, and the sealed contraband were ordered confiscated. The seized ganja will be destroyed after the appeal period ends.
