Alia Bhatt's ex-assistant arrested for ₹77 lakh fraud, splurged on parties, gadgets and shopping
MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt's former personal assistant Vedika Prakash Shetty has been arrested for allegedly siphoning off nearly ₹77 lakh from the actor's production house. According to police sources, Shetty splurged the stolen money on iPhones, iPads, high-end kitchen appliances, and sent money to at least five other individuals. What remained, she confessed, was spent on lavish parties and shopping sprees. She had allegedly been on the run for months — first fleeing to her native village near Mangalore and later to Rajasthan — after an FIR was filed in January. Shetty, a resident of Marol in Andheri East, was appointed on a monthly salary of ₹40,000 as a consultant and secretary to handle the administrative and personal work of Bhatt and her production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions Pvt Ltd. Her responsibilities included managing Bhatt's travel plans, household staff, vendor payments, and even sensitive documents related to ongoing film projects. But behind the trust lay betrayal. According to investigators, Shetty began by misusing gift cards and vendor gifts in October 2022. When confronted by Bhatt's mother, actor-director Soni Razdan — also a director at the company — Shetty admitted to the misconduct and was let off with a warning. 'We considered her age and her apology. We forgave her,' Razdan told the police. 'She promised it wouldn't happen again.' But the police say the warning only emboldened her. While continuing to work in a consulting role, Shetty allegedly accessed confidential documents — including film scripts, contracts, travel plans, and business operations — and passed on this information to third parties without authorisation. Then came the financial fraud. Razdan discovered that Shetty had submitted fake invoices in the names of vendors and routed the payments into a third-party account, which ultimately funnelled the money into Shetty's own. The total amount misappropriated? ₹76.90 lakh. A complaint was filed and the FIR registered on January 23, 2025, under Sections 316(4) (criminal breach of trust by a clerk or servant) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. As the heat mounted, Shetty vanished. Her attempt to secure interim bail from the Bombay High Court was rejected. She was finally nabbed from Bengaluru after weeks of tracking. The investigation is now focused on her financial records, including debit and credit card statements, to trace the full extent of her expenditures and any possible accomplices. 'She took advantage of the trust placed in her,' said a senior police officer. 'But eventually, the truth caught up.'

Vedika had worked as Alia's personal assistant for over two years, a job that ended last year. Reportedly, during this time, she managed many of Alia's personal and business affairs, including looking after the operations of her production house, Eternal Sunshine Productions Pvt Ltd. From handling schedules to managing money matters, Vedika was trusted with many important tasks. But things took a shocking turn when she was accused of forging Alia's signature and siphoning off huge sums of money. But the police claim that she instead used this trust to her own advantage by forging Alia's signature and moving large sums of money to her own accounts, reported IANS. How the fraud came to light The matter first came to notice earlier this year. The case was registered on January 23 after Alia received an invoice from Vedika for a payment linked to an event. But something about it didn't seem right. Alia decided to double-check and called the number on the invoice. To her surprise, the call went to a friend of Vedika's. This raised a big red flag. Alia then decided to audit her accounts, and what she found was shocking. Vedika had allegedly committed a forgery of over Rs 76 lakh. Complaint filed by Alia's mother Soni Razdan As per a News18 report, Vedika has been accused of swindling an amount of Rs 76,90,892 from both Eternal Sunshine's funds and Alia's personal accounts. This happened between 2023 and 2025. A complaint was filed by Alia's mother, actor Soni Razdan, earlier this year. She alleged financial misconduct, which led to an FIR being registered and an investigation starting. After the case was registered, Vedika kept moving from one city to another to avoid arrest. 'Ever since the case was registered in January, Shetty has been moving from Mangaluru to Rajasthan to Pune and was finally tracked down in Bengaluru,' said an officer from Juhu police station to TOI. She even tried to get legal protection. Her bail application was rejected by the sessions court in May. Later, the Bombay High Court also turned down her plea for interim protection from arrest in June. Finally arrested in Bengaluru On Tuesday evening, nearly five months after the complaint was filed, Vedika was finally arrested by a team of Mumbai Police from Bengaluru. Police sources told Hindustan Times that they are now checking her bank accounts and financial records to see the complete picture of how the money was moved. So far, neither Alia nor her team has given an official statement about the matter. At this time, she was entrusted with various responsibilities, starting from Urvashi's wardrobe, heavy gowns and personal belongings. However, soon we realised that she had engaged in multiple acts of theft and deceit which caused a great deal of financial loss to the family," Urvashi's mother claimed. Urvashi's mother alleged that in 2016, Vedika stole a 'significant amount of money" from Urvashi's grandmother too. 'During the Miss Universe India crown handover ceremony in 2016, my mother traveled from Nainital to our residence in Mumbai to attend the event. While she was staying at our home, Vedika Shetty, who had access to our house as Urvashi's assistant stole a significant amount of money (amounting to lakhs of rupees) from my mother's briefcase. This incident occurred when my mother was temporarily away from her belongings during her visit to the doctor and Vedika took advantage of her absence to commit the theft," she added. Police sources tell us that on Tuesday, a team of Mumbai Police tracked Vedika down to Bengaluru, from where she was arrested.
