Ethan Holliday Following Dad Matt, Brother Jackson On Path To Majors
Ethan Holliday has signed a record-setting $9 million deal with the Colorado Rockies. The fourth overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft earlier this month joins father Matt and brother Jackson as pro players. The signing bonus for the 18-year-old shortstop is the largest for a high school draft pick, surpassing the $8.2 million to Eli Willits, 17-year-old shortstop picked No. 1 by of the Washington Nationals. Only right-handed pitchers Paul Skenes ($9.2 million, Pittsburgh Pirates, No. 1 in 2023) and Chase Burns ($9.25 million, Cincinnati Reds, No. 2 in 2024) and first baseman Charlie Condon ($9.25 million, Rockies, No. 3 in 2024) signed for more. Jackson Holliday signed for $8.19 million as the No. 1 overall choice by the Baltimore Orioles in 2022. That obliterates what dad Matt got as a seventh-round pick (No. 210 overall) by the Rockies in 1998. He got $840,000 as a high school third baseman – but that was more than eight first-rounders and 24 second-rounders received that year. Matt was also a star quarterback and coveted by several colleges. The money persuaded him to turn pro and he eventually earned, according to nearly $160 million over 15 years in the Majors. Numerous scouts had Ethan ranked as their No. 1 prospect, as did MLB citing his athleticism and raw power. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, they forecast the left-handed hitter to outgrow shortstop and eventually move to third or first. He does not have the speed of his brother or father. Yeah, I'm jealous of how freakishly strong he is at 18, and he's only going to get stronger. 'I think he can hit the ball all over the field and cover a lot of different pitches and shapes. 'I wish I was as smooth as Ethan sometimes, and the ability to throw from all angles and do some things that are pretty special. He's a great defender. I don't think he gets enough credit for it.' Like Father, Like Two Sons There have been 17 instances of a father and two sons playing in the Majors. The Hairston family is listed twice. Jerry Jr. had the best career, playing 1,4423 games at second, third and the outfield for nine teams, mostly the Orioles. The first MLB dad to have two sons in the Majors was Jimmy Cooney. He played shortstop, 1890 to 1892, batting .242 in 324 games, mostly with the Chicago Cubs. Oldest son Jimmy played short and second for six clubs, mostly the Cubs, batting .262 from 1917 until 1928. Johnny hit .286 as a two-way player from 1921 through 1944, mostly with the Boston Braves. He hit only two homers but struck out just 107 times in 1,172 games, mostly in center field. He played all three outfield spots, first base and had a 34-44 record and 3.72 ERA in 159 games as a pitcher. The Best Combos The most successful fathers to have two sons in MLB have been Hall of Fame first baseman George Sisler, seven-time gold glove catcher Bob Boone, six-time gold glove third baseman Buddy Bell, five-time all-star catcher Tony Pena and five-time all-star pitcher Mel Stottlemyre. Matt Holliday had six fine seasons with the Rockies. His best season was at age 27 in 2007. He won the National League batting championship with a .340 average, led the league in hits (216), doubles (50), RBI (137) and had a career-best 36 homers. (Photo by) The Rockies are excited to pair the power potential of Ethan Holliday with Condon, the 6-6 right-handed slugger who is currently hitting .300 with 5 homers in the minors this year despite being slowed by a broken left wrist incurred in spring training. Holliday grew up idolizing current St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado – who was a prolific slugger and gold glove third baseman in all eight of his years in Colorado before being dealt in 2021. If he embraces defense as well as his hero while continuing to hit, the Rocky Mountain sky is the limit. Ethan Holliday will have pressure to match his brother and his father. Many believe he has the skills to do it.

Who is leading MLB's MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year races?

The four-time Pro Bowler called Cincinnati's latest offer "atrociously low." 🏈 UFL teams to relocate: The UFL's entire USFL division (Birmingham Stallions, Houston Roughnecks, Memphis Showboats, Michigan Panthers) will reportedly be relocated for the 2026 season. ⚾️ MLB awards watch With MLB's second half underway, and just over two months left in the regular season, let's take stock of the three major awards races. American League MVP: With all due respect to the greatest offensive season by a catcher in MLB history and the Cy Young frontrunner, this one's a slam dunk at the moment. Aaron Judge (NYY): The Yankees captain is having the best season of his career in the midst of one of the greatest four-year runs in league history. He's on pace for 12.3 WAR, per FanGraphs, which would be the best since Barry Bonds in the early aughts. Remove Bonds, and it's the best since Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1927. Cal Raleigh (SEA): The Mariners backstop is on track to become the first catcher with a 50-homer season, and Judge and Shohei Ohtani are the only players in baseball with a better OPS. Just a remarkable year from Big Dumper. Tarik Skubal (DET): With no other hitter clearly in third place, this goes to the league's best pitcher for two years running. Cy Young: Skubal is vying to become the first back-to-back AL Cy Young winner since Pedro Martínez in 1999-2000, but his competition in Boston isn't that far behind. Skubal (DET): Detroit's ace leads all qualified MLB starters in both strikeout and walk rate, which is outrageous. He also has the best WHIP (0.81) and is tied for the best ERA (2.19) in the AL. Garrett Crochet (BOS): The hard-throwing southpaw leads the majors in strikeouts (165) and is tied with Skubal for the AL's best ERA. And to think he only became a starter last year. Hunter Brown (HOU): While his numbers are still excellent (2.57 ERA, 0.99 WHIP), a couple so-so starts in July have opened the door for guys like Jacob deGrom (2.28 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) and Max Fried (2.43 ERA, 1.01 WHIP) to take his spot. Rookie of the Year: The Athletics might not have a home city or a major league ballpark, but they do have the league's two best rookies. Jacob Wilson (A's): The first rookie shortstop ever voted by fans to start the All-Star Game has the fifth-best average in the majors (.315). Nick Kurtz (A's): He's the only AL rookie with more homers or a higher OPS than Wilson, and with 29 fewer games played this race could tighten considerably. Carlos Narváez (BOS): The Red Sox backstop has the third-best OPS among all AL catchers (.774). National League MVP: At some point, Shohei Ohtani will cede the throne of the greatest player on the planet. We are nowhere near that point as he barrels toward his fourth MVP in five years. Ohtani (LAD): The same guy who leads the NL in HR (36), runs (95) and OPS (.993) also has a 1.50 ERA through six starts since returning from elbow surgery. Pete Crow-Armstrong (CHC): The Cubs' youngster is arguably the best outfielder in the majors, to say nothing of his 26 HR and 28 SB, both top five in the NL. Add it up and he trails only Judge for the MLB lead in WAR. Juan Soto (NYM): All-Star snub and cold start aside, the Mets' $765 million man has looked like himself — aka a top five player — for at least the last two months. Cy Young: As with the AL, this is a two-man race at the moment. Zack Wheeler (PHI): On the one hand, you have Philly's two-time runner-up who leads the league in WHIP (0.88) and strikeouts (164) and is third in ERA (2.39). Paul Skenes (PIT): On the other is Pittsburgh's phenom, who boasts a league-best 1.91 ERA and a stellar 0.91 WHIP that trails only Wheeler's. Good thing we've still got two months left to sort this out. Logan Webb (SF): The Giants' ace is leading the NL in innings for the third straight year, and could nab his third straight top-six Cy Young finish. Rookie of the Year: Who do you choose: the solid player who's been there all season or the lightning rod with just six starts under his belt? Drake Baldwin (ATL): The Braves' backstop has an .837 OPS and 11 HR (both second among NL rookies) to go along with above-average defense behind the dish. Jacob Misiorowski (MIL): The rookie sensation boasts a 2.45 ERA and 0.92 WHIP, which earned him a controversial All-Star selection after just five starts. Hyeseong Kim (LAD): The 26-year-old Korean is batting a scorching .317 through 53 games for the reigning champs. 🎧 Listen: What to watch for post All-Star break (Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Yahoo Sports) 📸 Through the lens Washington, D.C. — A day after winning her doubles match, 45-year-old Venus Williams stunned world No. 35 Peyton Stearns with a straight-sets victory at the DC Open — her first tour-level singles match in over a year and first win since 2023. Unreal. Turn back the clock: Williams is the oldest player to win a tour-level singles match since 2004, when 47-year-old Martina Navratilova won in the first round at Wimbledon. Geneva, Switzerland — Defending champion England is headed back to the Women's Euro final after their 2-1 comeback victory over Italy. They get the winner of Germany-Spain on Sunday. Historic strike: Chloe Kelly's 119th-minute game-winner, a rebound off her own blocked penalty kick, was the latest game-winning goal in Women's Euro history. Mont Ventoux, France — Tadej Pogačar made history on Tuesday in his pursuit of a fourth Tour de France victory, climbing the iconic Mont Ventoux in just 54:51, a full minute faster than the previous record. France gets on the board: Valentin Paret-Peintre won Stage 16 to give the host nation its first stage win of this year's race. Pogačar still holds the overall lead by 4 minutes, 15 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard. 🏀 Yang Hansen has arrived The Trail Blazers shocked the NBA world last month when they drafted Chinese center Yang Hansen with the No. 16 pick. How surprising was the pick? When Yang's name was called, he was sitting in the stands with fans rather than in the green room with his fellow draftees because he hadn't received an invitation. Sin City sensation: Despite being a relative unknown in America, the 7-foot-1 Yang is already a phenomenon in his native country. That was apparent this month in Las Vegas, where he was one of the biggest stars of Summer League, writes Ben Golliver of the Washington Post: Thousands of Chinese and Chinese American fans traveled to Sin City to watch Yang play … Tencent, a Chinese media company, dispatched a documentary crew to follow him … and more than a dozen reporters from China covered his games. Back in China, 5.2 million people watched Tencent's free broadcast of the Blazers' exhibition against the Grizzlies, according to an NBA official, dwarfing the 1.1 million Americans who watched No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg's debut for the Mavericks on ESPN. On Tencent's paywalled service, one of Yang's games drew 3.4 million viewers — 16 times the service's average. And on China Central Television, Yang's summer league games garnered larger average audiences than the national broadcast network's telecasts of this year's NBA playoffs. Next in line: Yang is the third Chinese player to be drafted in the first round, joining Yao Ming (No. 1 in 2002) and Yi Jianlian (No. 6 in 2007). His favorite player is Nikola Jokić and he flashed Jokić-like vision in Vegas, where Yang had a higher assist rate than any of the 15 players picked ahead of him. 🏈 Coming soon: College football! High school star Ethan Holliday agrees record $9m signing bonus with Rockies
Ethan Holliday agreed to a minor league contract with a $9m bonus with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, a record for a player drafted out of high school under the current system. Holliday, a son of Rockies great Matt Holliday and the younger brother of Baltimore second baseman Jackson Holliday, was the No 4 overall pick in this year's draft. The 18-year-old, 6ft 4in shortstop from Stillwater, Oklahoma, was rated by MLB Pipeline as the No 1 available prospect. The previous record for a drafted high school player under the current system was set this month by No 1 overall pick Eli Willits, who agreed to an $8.2m bonus with Washington. That topped the $8.19m given to Holliday's brother, Jackson, by the Orioles in 2022. The bonus also matches the fourth highest for any drafted player since picks were restricted to minor league contracts in 2012, trailing Cincinnati right-hander Chase Burns and Colorado outfielder Charlie Condon (both $9.25m), Pittsburgh right-hander Paul Skenes ($9.2m) and matching Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews. All four of those players signed after attending college. Holliday's family pedigree is impressive. He is the fourth member of his family to be named state baseball player of the year award in Oklahoma after his uncle Josh, father Matt and brother Jackson. Before his senior year at high school he had signed an endorsement deal with Adidas and went on to post a .611 batting average, hitting 19 home runs in 33 games with an OPS of 2.038. His father, Matt, was a seven-time All-Star during a career mostly spent with the Rockies and St Louis Cardinals, with whom he won the World Series in 2011.

Rockies sign Ethan Holliday to largest-ever bonus for a high school player after nabbing him with 4th pick in draft
To many, the Colorado Rockies got a steal when they selected elite shortstop prospect Ethan Holliday with the No. 4 pick in the MLB Draft. They're paying him like he was the best player in his class. Per the Rockies have signed Holliday to a $9 million signing bonus, the largest-ever for a high school draft pick. It surpasses the bonus ($8.2 million) signed by No. 1 overall pick (Nationals) Eli Willits. It's the fourth-highest bonus awarded to a draft pick of any kind. Only Paul Skenes ($9.2 million, Pirates, No. 1 overall in 2023), Chase Burns ($9.25 million, Reds, No. 2 overall in 2024) and Charlie Condon ($9.25 million, Rockies, No. 3 overall in 2024) signed for more. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The bonus speaks to the excitement around Holliday in Colorado and upside the shortstop with top baseball pedigree brings to the Rockies. Holliday is the son of seven-time All-Star and 2004 NL batting champion Matt Holliday. He's the brother of Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday, who's off to a strong start in his second MLB season, three years after Baltimore selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Holliday was No. 2 player on Yahoo Sports' Draft Board and regarded by many as a potential No. 1 overall pick. But he slid to the Rockies, who were happy to draft him at No. 4. For Rockies fans, the acquisition of Holliday adds a glimmer of hope amid a season of misery in which Colorado is flirting with the worst record in MLB history. And for good reason. Here's Yahoo Sports baseball analyst Jordan Shusterman on Holliday's favorable comparisons to his brother, Jackson: For the most part, Holliday's performance throughout his high school career sustained the outlandish hype, culminating in a resounding senior season in which he completely outclassed the middling Oklahoma competition, posting a laughable 2.046 OPS with 16 home runs in 118 plate appearances across 32 games. Holliday won't help the Rockies this season. But there's reason for excitement in Colorado.

Ethan Holliday and Colorado agree to record $9 million signing bonus, AP source says
Ethan Holliday agreed to a minor league contract with a $9 million bonus with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, a record for a player drafted out of high school under the current system, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.
