Prince George turns 12 as royal family unveils new birthday portrait

The Prince and Princess of Wales have released a new portrait to mark Prince George's 12th birthday on July 22, 2025. The image, taken earlier this summer by photographer Josh Shinner at the family's Norfolk home, shows George smiling while leaning on a wooden fence. He is dressed casually in a blue and white checked button down shirt, a brown fleece gilet, and a blue-and-white friendship bracelet. In addition to the portrait, a behind-the-scenes birthday video was also shared. The footage shows George outdoors with his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. In one moment, he is seen playfully lifting Louis, and in another, the three siblings walk hand-in-hand across a grassy path, offering a rare look at their family dynamic. This birthday marks George's last before becoming a teenager, and he has made an increasing number of public appearances over the past year. These included Wimbledon, Trooping the Colour, a VE Day event, and a football match with Prince William. The rise in his public visibility reflects a gradual preparation for future royal responsibilities. Prince George currently attends Lambrook School in Berkshire. As he approaches 13, senior school plans are under consideration, with reports suggesting Eton College and Marlborough College as potential options.

Former Highland MSP Sir Jamie McGrigor dies aged 75

Former Conservative MSP for the Highlands, Sir Jamie McGrigor, has died at the age of 75. McGrigor was elected to the first devolved Scottish parliament in 1999 and was a long-standing leading figure in the Scottish Conservative party. He was a Conservative MSP for 17 years and then a councillor for the South Oban and Islands Ward of Argyll and Bute in 2016. Posting on social media, John Swinney said he was 'very sorry' to hear of the former MSP's passing. 'We came from different political traditions and often held opposing views, but as an MSP, Jamie was a warm, engaging presence and was deeply committed to the Highlands and Islands. 'My thoughts are with his family and friends.' Born in London in 1949, McGrigor went to primary school in Argyll and attended Eton College in Windsor. He was described as having a passion for fishing and was a sheep and cattle farmer for 30 years before becoming an MSP. He also worked in the financial and shipping sectors in both Glasgow and London. Throughout his political career McGrigor was a spokesperson on the environment, fisheries and climate change as well as a former member of the European & External Affairs Committee. McGrigor announced he would be standing as an MSP in 2016 but as a councillor intended 'to keep representing Highland & Island views right up until my retirement'. Prince George's future destiny 'laid bare by William and Kate Middleton on landmark day'

Prince George's life has been set out before him from the moment he was born, knowing that all roads in his future lead to him becoming King. Thankfully, he has already been shown the ropes by his parents as he becomes a more focal part of the royal family With Prince George 's 12th birthday right around the corner, all eyes are on the young royal as he approaches his adolescence and becomes more of a focal point of the royal family. As the youngster continues to come into his own as a royal and appear more at royal engagements, many have long wondered how George was informed about his destiny as King. ‌ From the moment he was born, all roads have led to him eventually ascending to the throne, which was no doubt confronting for a young boy. Thankfully, George has had his parents, Prince William and Princess Kate, to steer him in the right direction and show him the royal ropes as he steps out in the public eye more and more. ‌ ‌ Royal commentator Robert Lacey speculated about the young royal's future in his book Battle of Brothers, as he has long been curious about howGeorge was informed of his extraordinary future role and how he reacted to being told he is an heir to the throne. Lacey penned: "William has not revealed to the world how and when he broke the big news to his son. Maybe one day George will tell us the story himself. But sometime around the boy's seventh birthday in the summer of 2020 it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince's life of future royal 'service and duty' would particularly involve." Robert further added that William and Kate wanted to have a conversation with George at a "controlled moment of their choice" when he turned seven. ‌ This decision was reportedly linked to "William's unhappiness at the haphazard fashion in which the whole business of his royal destiny had buzzed around his head from the start," as the Prince of Wales endured the same fate as his oldest son as the first heir to the throne after his father King Charles. To help with his preparation to eventually become King, even though his ascension to the throne is likely still decades away, George will begin receiving special lessons on everything from his official duties to the constitution and the importance of the Commonwealth. ‌ While the headmaster at Lambrook School, where the Wales children all attend, stated that they give students 'feathers to fly so that when they leave us, they will spread their wings and take flight," George will also no doubt receive a more intense education on his future role as King when he begins secondary school in 2026. Many royal commentators are expecting that George will follow in his father's footsteps and attend Eton College, while others believe that the young royal will be enrolled at Princess Kate's alma mater of Marlborough College.

But how does it compare worldwide? Image: Hilton College Private education in South Africa now costs more than ever. In truth, it's hitting luxury territory. In 2025, fees at South Africa's most expensive private boarding school, Hilton College in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, passed the R420 000 mark. And it's not an outlier. Michaelhouse down the road costs R392 000 per annum with St Andrew's College in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) setting parents back R387 531 a year. In terms of what one would need to earn per annum to afford to send your child to one of the aforementioned schools, remember those fees are after tax . You'd need to be in the top 1% of South African salary-earners to be able to afford to do so. Factoring in all of life's other costs, to afford Hilton College comfortably, our calculations show you'd need a household income of between R2.6 million and R2.8 million per year. However, those amounts are 'low' compared to what it costs to send a pupil to Eton College, one of the United Kingdom's top schools in 2025. Eton College fees are £21 099.60 (R508 863.70) per term, which includes tuition, board, activities, and educational materials – much the same as is on offer on Hilton College. With three terms per academic year, the total annual cost is £63 298.80 (R1 526 591.09). This is inclusive of VAT, which is now applied to independent school fees. Mithridate Resort 2026: Henley Regatta Meets China's Dragon Boat Festival

Daniel Fletcher's second collection for the Guangzhou-based brand Mithridate continued to be a study of cultural common ground between the U.K. and China. He looked at how both sides celebrate the change of seasons: dandy outings during Royal Ascot, wild nights at Glastonbury, as well as the Henley Regatta, an annual summer rowing event on the River Thames loved by the London set. More from WWD Kenny Scharf Exhibition Opens at MAM Shanghai EXCLUSIVE: Craft Is King, Says Jonathan Anderson, Who's Putting the Focus on Makers at the New JW Anderson Brand Giles Deacon Whips Up Colorful New Tweeds for Purdey It reminded him of his first-hand experience of the heated Dragon Boat Festival racing on Guangzhou's Pearl River at the end of May, when he was there developing the collection with the local team in his studio, sitting right next to the factory. The multicultural references led to a collection that was rooted in English heritage, but designed for a weather-transcending global audience. Wardrobe essentials were done in soft sand-washed silk and pastel Merino wool, formal attire came with a Mick Jagger hedonistic touch, and outdoor numbers were rendered in aged leather and fine checks for unpredictable weather. He also looked at the queer and romantic world of 'Brideshead Revisited' with preppy items such as a rowing blazer with a Mithridate logo inspired by old photos of Eton College, and a padded bomber jacket in navy paired with check shorts. The anything-goes style that a young David Hockney adopted played a key role, too. 'I found this beautiful photo of Hockney signing a conservatory painting. That kind of clash of colors, textures, and prints is something that I find inspiring,' he said. His admiration for Chinese craftsmanship, meanwhile, could be found in the details. The final look in the collection, a delicate embroidered dress, was hand-beaded using a traditional technique to evoke the pattern of picnic basket checks, for example.
