Abandoned Six Nations stadium that hosted Wales could stage matches at European Championship

Abandoned Six Nations stadium that hosted Wales could stage matches at European Championship The Stadio Flaminio in Rome, Italy, has been left to rot for well over a decade, but it's set to be brought back to life in time for Euro 2032, with Lazio to move in Stadio Flaminio in Rome has been abandoned for a decade - but it could soon be brought back to life (Image: Massimo Mostosi on YouTube ) A derelict stadium once graced by Michael Jackson is set to be revived for the European Championships in 2032. The Euros will be co-hosted by Italy and Turkey in seven years' time, with preparations already underway to bring the Stadio Flaminio back to life. ‌ Located three kilometres north of Rome's city centre, the famous stadium was originally constructed in the 1950s for the 1960 Summer Olympics. ‌ Despite undergoing a renovation in 2008, the Stadio Flaminio has since fallen into disrepair, now overrun with tall grass and shrubbery. The iconic stadium has a rich history, having hosted concerts by global music icons such as The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and 13-time Grammy Award winner Michael Jackson. It also served as the home ground for Italy's rugby union team from 2000 to 2011, hosting several Six Nations championships – including games against Wales – during this period. Article continues below The stadium, which once accommodated over 30,000 spectators for Six Nations matches, has been neglected for more than a decade. However, plans have surfaced for its redevelopment ahead of Euro 2032. The ambitious project involves Serie A club Lazio taking up residence, with an estimated cost of £334million being reported. This isn't the first time a refurbishment scheme has been suggested for the famous stadium, but previous plans have been squashed due to archaeological restrictions preventing new constructions in the surrounding areas. ‌ The stadium held many impressive ceremonies, including concerts, matches and other sporting events (Image: Getty ) However, the developers of this project have devised a solution by proposing a 'restricted traffic zone' that would be implemented three hours prior to kick-off. This would curtail the number of vehicles permitted in the vicinity, necessitating approximately 70% of spectators to use public transport for match attendance. Article continues below The developers have also claimed that the renovation will stimulate local economic growth, as the proposed 50,000-seat stadium could host a variety of events. Italy's stringent red tape procedures have historically posed challenges to similar projects, yet there is growing optimism that Euro 2032 could bolster chances of securing essential funding. To host matches at the tournament, Stadio Flaminio would need to comply with UEFA's category 4 standards, which are suitable for international events.

Ohio, 22, has long been close mates with superstar Bellingham, but he's making a splash for himself now after netting a sensational long-distance effort against the Young Lions at the U21 Euros. Unfortunately for Ohio, his spectacular finish was rendered useless thanks to a Harvey Elliott double that saw England U21s advance to the Euros final instead. However, the former RB Leipzig rising star still caught the attention of most fans and appears to have made a name for himself during the competition. Ohio, who had represented England at U16 level before switching his international allegiance to Holland, previously spent time in the academy ranks at Manchester United before quitting for a move to Man City. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL REVAMP Abandoned stadium that used to host England could be revived for Euro 2032 It was during his time at Man Utd and with the England U16s that he became good mates with Bellingham, forming a friendship that they still have today. Speaking to SunSport previously, Ohio explained how Bellingham is "just Jude" to him and not the global phenomenon he has become. He said: "He's the best in the world but to me he's just Jude. He's been my best mate for four, five years now. We played for England Under-16s, that's when we got close. 'It's been nice to see the growth of him. I'm really proud — he's a superstar.' 5 Bellingham and Ohio are always hanging out together Credit: Instagram @noahohio CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS The pair are regularly posting snaps together and Ohio has headed out to Madrid to watch Bellingham play for Real in recent times too. Ohio's own career hasn't quite followed the same meteoric rise, but the forward is working hard at forging his own path in Europe. Jude Bellingham reveals rivalry with brother Jobe at Club World Cup in cheeky interview The 6ft Bagsman left Man City's academy in 2019 in favour of a move to RB Leipzig's development side - turning down a pro deal with Pep Guardiola's side in search of more first-team opportunities elsewhere. Over four years with Leipzig, Ohio never managed to break into the firs team fold, ultimately being sent on a flurry of loans around Europe. That was until he penned a permanent switch to Belgian side Standard Liege in 2022, going on to make 45 appearances and score six goals for the club. Ohio spent the second half of the 23/24 season on loan in the Championship with Hull City, scoring three times in eight games. Last summer he left Belgium in a permanent switch to Utrecht, where he helped the Dutch side secure a place in the Europa League this season. Ohio still has hopes of returning to England and making it over here, explaining: "I chose to go abroad when I was quite young and I had to make a decision for me. I'm really grateful to both clubs [Man Utd and Man City]. 'I had a great time and most of my mates are playing in the Championship or in the Premier League, and doing so good. 'I hope to follow and make a name for myself in England. I think it's the ambition of all the boys, to play as high as we can." While reaching the lofty heights his mate Bellingham has isn't out of Ohio's sights either, claiming that seeing it up close make him believe he can achieve it too. He added: "You know it's possible because your friend's got there. So anything is possible and everyone's journey is different. 'He [Bellingham] tells me to stay focused, don't look left or right, it's your own journey and your own path. Don't compare and keep going at it. The more focused you are, the more success you will get.

Abandoned 25,000-seater stadium that hosted England and Michael Jackson could return to former glory for Euro 2032

AN abandoned stadium which once hosted pop icon Michael Jackson is in line for a multi-million-pound revamp. And it could end up being one of the grounds used for UEFA Euro 2032. 4 4 4 The tournament is set to take place in seven years, with Italy and Turkey sharing the host rights. The Stadio Olimpico and San Siro are dead certs to stage matches during the competition. But an abandoned ground built in the 1950s could also host games if a proposed renovation plan gets the green light. The Stadio Flaminio on the outskirts of Rome is finally set to be renovated nearly 20 YEARS after proposals were first put forward. The ground, which was built ahead of the 1960 Olympics, has become dilapidated in recent years and is currently full of overgrown grass and bushes. The Flaminio's current state is a far cry from when it was in its pomp and hosted the likes of music icons David Bowie, MJ and The Rolling Stones. It's not that long ago since the ground was regularly used. From the year 2000 to 2011, it was the home of the Italian national rugby team and hosted a slew of Six Nations games in front of 30,000 spectators. The renovation is expected to cost a whopping £334million (€391m). Abandoned EFL stadium left to rot with pitch covered in weeds just five years after hosting final match Previous plans to renovate the stadium fell flat on their face due to archaeological constraints preventing additional facilities from being built in the surrounding areas. Developers, however, plan to get around that hurdle with a three-hour "restricted traffic zone" ahead of kick-off and the commencement of other events.

Euro 2028 co-hosts must qualify but with safety net

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Euro 2028 & Euro 2032 Hosts Announcement - Nyon, Switzerland - October 10, 2023 The UEFA Euro trophy is pictured during the announcement REUTERS/Denis Balibouse/File Photo Co-hosts England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will not automatically be in the 2028 European Championship finals and must go through qualifying, though two spots are reserved if they fail. The decision was taken by European governing body UEFA's executive committee on Wednesday in Bilbao ahead of the Europa League Final. Hosts or co-hosts have automatically qualified for the Euros in recent editions, barring the 2020 tournament which had no automatic berth as it was held in 11 host cities across Europe. The four co-hosts will be drawn into separate groups, with 12 group winners and eight best runners-up (20 teams) advancing directly to the final 24-team tournament. "Two spots in the final tournament will be reserved for the two best ranked host nations who are not qualified as group winners or best runners-up after the completion of the qualifying group stage," UEFA said in a statement. The remaining spots will be assigned via playoffs between the remaining runners-up in the qualifying groups and the best ranked 2026-27 UEFA Nations League non-qualified group winners. If both reserved qualifying slots for co-hosts are used, then eight teams will compete in two paths for two spots, with single-leg semi-finals and a final. If only one reserved qualifying slot is used, then 12 teams will compete in three paths, like the system used for Euro 2024. If no reserved qualifying slots are used, which means all four co-hosts qualify, then eight teams will play four home and away playoff ties to qualify. Euro 2028 will be held across nine venues in the United Kingdom and Ireland. England finished runners-up at Euro 2024 while Scotland were knocked out in the group stage. Wales and Ireland did not qualify for last year's tournament hosted by Germany. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
