Review: CMAT puts on ‘all-timer' show at Glastonbury

©Evening Standard Irish pop singer CMAT's threw down a rhinestone gauntlet to the Glastonbury festival's big guns yesterday with an all-timer performance involving hyperactive and hilarious stage craft, songs which soared, and a huge will to simply grab this moment and wring every drop of joy from it. The musician from Dunboyne, Co Meath, real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson (29), ticks every box in modern pop stardom. Sexy dance moves in Lycra, songs about messy love and hating Jamie Olivier, and a viral 'silly dance'. Or as she puts it: 'I have middle child syndrome, an amazing arse and the best Irish rock country band in the world.' With a clutch of albums under her belt and a new one on the way, this Glastonbury set felt like a true mass recognition of her talent and a step up into superstardom. What she has, that so many other artists don't, is the ability to be a laugh. She's constantly messing about, showing off, pulling faces, tearing around the stage, rolling over and taking the piss. It's old school entertainment that you just know comes from years of winning over hostile audiences in pubs, and makes her some dream combination of Kate Bush, Dolly Parton and Charlie Chaplin. A huge audience turned out for her set on the Pyramid stage at 1.40pm and she had them in the palm of her hand throughout. Introducing herself, she told crowds: 'My name is CMAT and I'm literally just a young one from Dunboyne/Dublin, depending who you ask.' There was one priceless moment mid-set when she told the crowd to talk among themselves while she has a band meeting. In a huddle with the Very Sexy CMAT Band, the mic 'accidentally' picked her up saying, 'Do you think they like us?' Later she'll spot someone side of stage: 'Sinead! That's my mum... I love that bitch.' The songs are fantastic too. Take A Sexy Picture of Me, from her upcoming album, is about the body-shaming abuse she received online. Of course her reaction is to strip down to her Lycra, wave her bum to the crowd and deliver a perfectly rendered protest song which is an anthem for celebrating yourself and telling the world where to go. It also has a set of dance moves that are so ridiculous it's impossible not to copy them. Another new song, The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station, is not a Jamie Oliver diss track, she says, it's more about her own hater tendencies. It combines her absolutely stunning vocal range with clowning about, hitting herself over the head as she curses her own viciousness. For I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby! she had the entire crowd doing the 'Dunboyne, Co Meath two-step' – and it really is the entire crowd – a sight which left the singer beaming. 'I think we might be about to break a personal record for the Very Sexy CMAT Band,' she told the crowd at the Somerset festival, which has sold over 200,000 tickets this year. 'We've never attempted it [the two-step] with this many people so I'm a little scared.' But then she was off again, into the crowd this time during Stay for Something, bouncing around and disappearing from view as the climax hit – along with the realisation among everyone watching that this was a bona fide classic set. Where did she get the energy? Back on stage, high kicks, silly faces, high notes, death drops onto the stage, and calls for a free Palestine. 'This is the scariest moment of my life but it will probably single-handedly be the best and most amazing thing I'll ever do,' she said. One of the best things Glastonbury has ever seen too.

Lauren Laverne, the iconic 6 Music radio DJ, gives The Standard her rundown of what's hot and what's not around London, as she heads to Glastonbury. Home is … Muswell Hill. I moved to London when I was a teenager and have lived all over, but I've been in this neighbourhood almost 20 years now and I love it. The view from the terrace of Ally Pally is one of the most beautiful in London. Where was your first flat in London? I was in a band and we moved down to sign a record deal when I was 18. We got a place just off St Paul's Road in Camden which was within tottering distance of some great clubs. I had no idea, but my future husband was living round the corner on Camden Square. Camden was much more rough and ready back then. What was your first job in the city? A musician. I was supposed to be at university doing medieval studies but life intervened. Where would you recommend for a first date? I'm a huge fan of the V&A so I'd probably say to head down to their new museum in Olympic Park. The perfect place to while away an afternoon getting to know each other. Justine Simons who has seen her vision of the East Bank in the Olympic Park, Stratford become a reality Matt Writtle Which shops do you rely on? Liberty — if it's good enough for Emma Stone's Cruella it's good enough for me. Space NK in Covent Garden, where I could happily spend the whole day just smelling things. Foyles bookshop — same as Space NK but the smell is books. Audio Gold in Crouch End is my local record shop and sound system experts. The loveliest people and so knowledgeable. Dunns Bakery in Muswell Hill is an institution. Get the rosemary sourdough with salted crust, toast and butter it and watch your life change. What's the best meal you've had? My 40th birthday dinner at Dean Street Townhouse. I love it in there, especially in the winter when they have a fire blazing in that twinkly Georgian dining room. Dean St Townhouse Soho House What would you do if you were Mayor for the day? I'd reopen Bagley's in King's Cross for a gigantic rave. Who is the most iconic Londoner? Dickens. He knew every side of the city and the way he articulated its energy and people has become part of our collective memory. What's the best thing a cabbie has ever said to you? We always end up talking about music! I had one who has a successful sideline as a house DJ and had just bought a record label. We had a good time chatting a load of Balearics … Where do you let your hair down? A gig at Ally Pally or a night at Alexandra Palace Theatre. You can see anything from Iggy Pop or The Chemical Brothers tearing the place apart in the main space to brilliant plays and stand-up. And I can walk home! The terrace at Alexandra Palace Who do you call when you want to have fun? My kids! They're teenagers and just so much fun. I'm off to the ballet tonight to see Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at the Royal Opera House with my youngest, and it's Pulp at the O2 for my eldest tomorrow. What's your biggest extravagance? Museum memberships and theatre tickets. What's your London secret? Going to the clock gallery in the British Museum at 10 to twelve on a weekday and just waiting for everything to go off … symphonic! What are you up to for work? Getting the nation to start its day dancing on my 6 Music show, talking about life and music with a fascinating castaway on Desert Island Discs, and chewing the fat and having fun with The One Show team each. I'm also about to head back to Glastonbury to bring the event into listeners and viewers' homes with the BBC. Lauren Laverne in the band Kenickie in the Nineties Stephen Sweet/REX Who is your hero? Annie Nightingale taught me how to be joyful while also changing things — she always made being a pioneer look like a party! And my mam, who was the wisest, cleverest, most encouraging person I have ever known. What do you collect? Books and records — and far too many. The London work of art which makes me happiest is the Peter Blake portrait of Sir Michael Eavis Favourite work of art in London? The one that makes me happiest is the Peter Blake portrait of Sir Michael Eavis that hangs in the new entrance to the National Portrait Gallery. Michael is a wonderful man and seeing him honoured for all he and his family have done warms my heart. What was the last thing you googled? 'Shepton Mallet two-week weather forecast.' Colin Jost Couldn't STOP Wife Scarlett Johansson From Kissing Jonathan Bailey at Jurassic World Rebirth NYC Premiere

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey shared a playful red carpet moment again, and this time, her husband, Colin Jost, was right there to witness it. The friendly kiss happened during the Jurassic World Rebirth premiere in New York City on Monday, June 23, just days after the duo made headlines for a similar smooch in London. At the New York event, Johansson cupped Bailey's cheeks and gave him a light kiss, sharing a moment of fun between co-stars. The two later posed arm-in-arm for photos. Bailey is openly gay and in a relationship, as per Page Six. Johansson's husband, Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, was also present. The couple, who tied the knot in 2020, were seen holding hands and chatting warmly on the red carpet. The pair share a 3-year-old son, Cosmo, and Johansson is also mom to 10-year-old Rose from her previous relationship with Romain Dauriac. At the New York premiere, Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey showed off their playful friendship with smiles, laughter, and a friendly kiss. The two co-stars seemed completely at ease, joking and posing together for the cameras. Their natural chemistry drew plenty of attention as they embraced warmly and chatted between photos. Bailey's long-standing friendship with Johansson has been on full display during the Jurassic World Rebirth press tour. Less than a week earlier, during the London premiere, the pair shared a similar kiss on the carpet. They held hands and exchanged laughs while fans and photographers captured the fun moment. Co-star Rupert Friend was even spotted smiling in the background as the playful kiss happened. Here's what we know about Jonathan Bailey's relationship Jonathan Bailey confirmed in 2023 that he is dating a man, although he chose not to name his partner publicly. "It's not secret, but it's private," he told the Evening Standard. "Having a private life is, for me, completely critical. I don't know if I would be able to be as confident to speak out on other things if I felt that my whole life was up for grabs." Bailey stars alongside Johansson and Rupert Friend in Jurassic World Rebirth, which continues to build buzz ahead of its release thanks to these lighthearted red carpet moments.
