T-Mobile unveils timing of major subscriber upgrade

T-Mobile has been focused on building the strongest network in the country, investing billions in the project and acquiring competitors like Sprint to help boost network capacity. The good news is that the company's efforts have paid off. The "uncarrier" was able to build a robust nationwide network that Ookla Speedtest just named the best in America. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Ookla's announcement that T-Mobile beat out the competition came at a good time for the company. T-Mobile has faced a lot of criticism of late for various business decisions, including raising prices on legacy plans and obscuring the total cost of some plans by quoting them without taxes. Still, despite these customer service challenges, a strong network goes a long way toward convincing people to sign up and remain customers over time. Evidence suggests T-Mobile knows that, too. The company's big investments in developing and perfecting network technology demonstrate that the carrier is well aware of just how important reliability and speed can be. That's why the carrier is continually pushing the edge in terms of pursuing new technological breakthroughs. One of those breakthroughs could be especially exciting, and according to the company's Chief Technology Officer Ulf Ewaldsson, it's expected to arrive sooner than you'd think. While celebrating T-Mobile's big win of being recognized for the country's strongest network, Ewaldsson also made several forward-focused statements about the carrier's recent progress. At a presentation in Copenhagen in June 2025, he said exciting new technology could be widely available very soon. "Artificially intelligent and intent-based, the 6G network will react immediately to any user's service needs like a personal valet. It will create maybe $10 trillion of economic value." T-Mobile is not the only carrier that is part of a race to perfect 6G technology. Communications companies in both the United States and China seem focused on making new advances into this network upgrade, even as carriers in the EU lag behind, thanks to lower consumer spending on phone service and tighter regulations in Europe. Still, if Ewaldsson's prediction pans out and T-Mobile successfully facilitates the transition to 6G by 2030, it could be a game-changer. If the T-Mobile CTO is right and 6G arrives by 2030, it will be a major positive change for T-Mobile users. That's because 6G is expected to provide a number of big benefits including: Related: T-Mobile finally brings back long-awaited feature Significantly faster speeds up to 100 gigabits per second, allowing for movies to be downloaded in secondsLower latency, with lag time limited to microseconds, so communication can be instantaneousHigher data capacity to allow for more connected devicesAI-enabled network optimization to ensure peak performance, effective use of resources, and personalized user experiences Ewaldsson confirmed that the push toward 6G aims to improve the customer experience, posting on X in mid-June, "...We're building 6G around you with intent-based networking. From 5G slicing to 6G speed, we're laying the groundwork for exciting things to come." T-Mobile Reveals It's Named ‘Best Network In America' By Ookla

Ookla Speedtest has just named T-Mobile the best mobile network in America, in what it claims is one of the biggest network tests of its kind. Is this true and what does it mean? T-Mobile named best network by Ookla One thing that seems certain is that T-Mobile likes the prefix 'un'. 'An underdog story 12 years in the making, the Un-carrier becomes the undisputed industry leader,' it said in its new press release. 'Backed by half a billion real world tests on millions of devices, the results reflect how people actually use their phones for things like video streaming, web browsing and more. By measuring both speed and experience, Ookla confirmed T-Mobile's position at the top, surpassing both AT&T and Verizon,' T-Mobile claimed. Ookla is a respected brand, and specifically referred to six months of analysis 'that included more than 570 million test points and 6 million different devices,' T-Mobile's president of technology, Ulf Ewaldsson told Fierce Network. In recent years, Verizon has held this title, and it's a pretty simple one, best network, rather than most widely available or fastest downloads or whatever. As such, it's worth taking notice of. Such an honor comes at a good time for the brand, which also announced a commercial launch date for its satellite connectivity service, T-Satellite which works on iPhone and Android handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S25. This service runs in conjunction with Starlink (though it doesn't install Starlink on your phone). This will go live on July 23 nationwide, 'extending coverage into more than 500,000 square miles of U.S. territory that traditional cell towers can't reach,' T-Mobile said. It said that the beta program has been trialed by almost 1.8 million users, with tens of thousands of those taking part being customers of Verizon and AT&T. The company's rise to success is partly thanks to the way it has combined its low-band spectrum with the mid-band range from Sprint. Some networks focused on the mmWave spectrum, which offers outstanding speeds but has problems beating some obstacles. Ewaldsson told Cnet that the company went in a different direction. 'We said, 'it's going to be a mid-band play, and it's going to be TDD [Time Division Duplex, a way to send and receive data in the same frequency] spectrum in the mid-band that you pair with a very strong low band.' We were able to get our hands on the best possible spectrum, thanks to merging with Sprint,' Ewaldsson said. The company also introduced new perks for its customers, such as DashPass, which offers DoorDash with no delivery fees and reduced service fees.
