British Open champion Scottie Scheffler to donate new practice facility to Texas Golf

Before Scotty Scheffler even teed it up for the first round of the British Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, the former Texas Longhorns golfer was making news. In a 5+ minute answer at his pre-tournament press conference, Scheffler opened up about the balance he's found in his life. While he strives to be the best in the world at his chosen profession, the things that fill his heart with joy are his family and inner circle. "If feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for like, a few minutes. It only lasts a few minutes. That kind of euphoric feeling. ... It's not a fullfilling life. It's not fulfilling from like the deepest places of your heart." - Scottie Scheffler Scheffler is obviously dedicated to his craft. But still, in many corners of the media and the golf world, his motives and desire were questioned. "I'm kind of a sicko. I love putting in the work. I love being able to practice, I love being able to live out my dreams. But at the end of the day, sometimes I don't understand the point." - Scottie Scheffler The Texas Ex has compartmentalized his life. He strives to be good at his job so he can enjoy what fills his heart. His 15-month-old son Bennet, his Highland Park High School sweetheart, wife Meredith and others close to him are what matters to him. Scheffler enjoys the grind of practice. Part of that comes from his time at Texas. On Monday, Texas Longhorns Golf Coach John Fields announced Scheffler would be funding a renovation of the Longhorns' practice facility at UT Golf Club. The complex and driving range will be called "Scheff's Kitchen." Scheffler and Meredith have remained close to Coach Fields and his wife Pearl. Last year, during an alumni pro-am, Scheffler let Pearl wear his Olympic Gold Medal all day. Although the Coach knew his former player had another motive. 'That helped him because he knew everyone wanted to see that gold medal … and Pearl got to be an Olympian for the day. He just finds fun ways to enjoy that moment but not be too overwhelmed by it, and he's really good about it.' - Texas Men's Golf Coach John Fields Other Texas golfers have contributed to the Longhorns golf facility. Jordan Spieth helped design and fund the construction of a six-hole short course at the club called "Spieth Lower 40." And Texas alum, and US Open winner, Tom Kite, recently remastered the team's chipping area. Of course, Scheffler also was back on the UT Campus last year to serve as the guest picker for ESPN College Football GameDay. He also received his first major award on GameDay. In 2022 Fields presented Scheffler with the Jack Nicklaus Trophy, his first PGA Tour Player of the Year award. He's now won it three years in a row. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.

The reason Greg Taylor swapped Celtic for PAOK as defender opens up on transfer pitch

The defender completed his move to the Greek side on Tuesday after six years at Parkhead Greg Taylor admits the love he was shown from PAOK convinced him to join the Greek side. Ex- Celtic star Taylor, 27, pulled the curtain down on a trophy-laden six years at Parkhead after rejecting a new contract. The left-back signed a two-year deal with PAOK, who finished third in the Greek Super League last season. Brendan Rodgers fought hard to keep him at Celtic, but Taylor 's head was turned by the sales pitch from new boss Razvan Lucescu. He told the club's media channel: "It's obviously a new chapter for me and my family but I'm very excited to be here now. "The love I was shown from the club, many of the directors, the manager, they showed that they believed in me and were very excited for me to come to the project with such a historical season, the 100 years of the club. "It made me really want to take the jump to be here. We want to be the best team in Greece, we want to win the league and hopefully be successful in Europe. That would be our aim for this season." Taylor - who won five titles at Celtic - has set his sights on lifting more silverware in Greece. PAOK were crowned champions after a dramatic final day in 2024 but lost their title to Olympiacos last season. Taylor said: "Straight away, you can understand that the fans are so patient. It was explained what happened on the last day of the season of 2024, so I can't wait to play in front of them and see their passion in the stands." The defender will once again share a dressing room with former Celtic flop Jonjoe Kenny at the Toumba Stadium. He added: "Obviously, Jonjoe signed this season. We played together at Celtic previously, so it's nice to have a familiar face in the changing room. But I'm also looking forward to meeting the rest of the guys in the team." Example issues apology after cancelling gig last minute after Glastonbury

Singer Example was forced to issue an apology to fans after cancelling his performance in Aberdeen just hours after jumping around on stage at Glastonbury Example issued an apology to fans after he was forced to cancel his performance in Aberdeen - the day after his gig at Glastonbury. The 43 year old singer, who shot to fame in 2010 with his hit album Won't Go Quietly, claimed that he suffered from sound issues while on stage at Glastonbury which caused his voice to strain. And the next day, just before he was due on stage in Aberdeen, he said he realised his voice had gone and was "absolutely gutted." ‌ Example, who was born Elliot John Gleave, had performed on the Shangri-La stage on Friday. ‌ Penning his apology to his adoring fans, he said: "During my set at Glastonbury, we experienced some unexpected sound issues that forced me to push my voice much harder than usual." He added: "I could feel it starting to go, so we made the difficult decision to cut the set short by 20 minutes to protect it ahead of today's performance at Granite City Festival Aberdeen." He continued: "I left the site immediately after the show and arrived at Gatwick by 7am, managing to get a few hours' sleep before my flight to Aberdeen. " He went on to say: "Unfortunately when I woke up, my voice was completely gone." He conclude his apology saying:"I hate cancelling shows - over the past 21 years, I've played 1,534 gigs and only ever cancelled 11. " " Scotland has always been my favourite place to perform and this was an incredibly hard decision to make.," he said. ‌ To everyone who was planning to see me today - and to the Granite City Festival team - I'm truly sorry. We'll make it up to you, E x." Aware his explanation as to why he cancelled his Aberdeen gig, it seems he feared that he was laying blame on the production team at Glastonbury. And so he quickly wrote: "This isn't a dig at the production crew. These things just happen sometimes." ‌ He went on to say: "One of the smaller stages at Glastonbury. Except when we turn up. " Thanking the organisers, he said: "Honestly thank you so much for having me last night. No artists make any money at Glastonbury. And that's fine. It's one of the most magical places on earth." He added: "I still want Pyramid stage. But I'm not going away just yet. I have patience. Gotta rest up so I can fly back to Australia tomorrow and be a professional Dad. Big love. E x."

Angenia Papineau said she hasn't smiled this much in weeks. The 20-year-old from Cross Lake spent a thrilling evening with her sister and friend at the Red River Exhibition in Winnipeg after a nomadic few weeks caused by wildfires near her hometown. 'It's been very stressful because we've wanted to go home for a while. We came out here for a break, and it's been a lot of fun,' Papineau told the Free Press on Tuesday. 'It feels a lot better getting out of the Airbnb after being stuck there and not really doing much.' JOHN WOODS / FREE PRESS Hailey Papineau, Angenia Papineau and Kayleigh Ross enjoy the Crazy Mouse ride at the Red River Ex Tuesday. More than three weeks ago, Papineau was preparing to return home to surprise her family after wrapping up her university studies this spring. She said her plans got derailed once her community was ordered to evacuate. 'It totally sucked. People left and had to find places to sleep. They were either going to community centres or arenas,' said Papineau. She and her parents, three brothers, sister, and dog are staying at an Airbnb since nobody in their family lives in Winnipeg. She said they are expected to return to Cross Lake, 500 kilometres north of Winnipeg, on Friday after the province lifted the evacuation order June 16. Thanks to the Canadian Red Cross, Papineau said she got free tickets to the Red River Ex this week. She rode the Ex's popular 'crazy mouse' and 'mega drop' roller-coasters and rode in the classic bumper cars. 'It's gotten our minds off what has been happening with the evacuation and being away from home and things like that. It's been nice,' she said. Shane Farberman, better known as 'Doo Doo the International Clown,' helped to bring ear-to-ear smiles to fair-goers, including evacuees. 'Everywhere I go, when I'm driving from a hotel and I see a busload of people walking in the park or having lunch, I've been jumping out, doing videos, taking pictures, and doing magic, and just getting families out,' said Farberman. 'I just feel it's good for my heart, and it's good for their heart.' The clown from Ontario, who appeared in Adam Sandler's Billy Madison and has performed at the Ex for more than 30 years, also entertains people across North America and Europe. Whether it's walk-around parties, pop-up shows, or being on stage, Farberman said Winnipeggers are an unmatched audience. JOHN WOODS / FREE PRESS Doo Doo The Clown, who has been clowning for 30 years, entertains at the Red River Ex Tuesday. 'The love that I get in Winnipeg is just amazing. Everybody is so warm and loving, and the people I've met have actually become lifetime friends of mine,' he said. 'I always have hundreds of families that come up to me, and the parents tell their kids, 'This is the clown when I was little at the fair.'' It's no surprise, during Doo Doo's 31st year at the Ex, he was seen drawing in a crowd of younger folks with his comedic magic tricks and balloon animals. He said being a clown will never get old for him. 'What other job in the world do you get paid to make people smile and laugh? To have this longevity, you need to love it,' he said. Although Doo Doo has been a longtime staple at the largest travelling carnival in North America, Garth Rogerson, CEO of the Red River Exhibition Association, said there are new features this year. Some of the latest concepts include a pro wrestling show, a chainsaw-carving demo area, the 'haunted carnival'— a 6,000-square-foot walk-through haunted house attraction — and a lumberjack show, which includes an axe-throwing and log-rolling competition. There's a theme each day, including Indigenous Peoples Day on Saturday and Filipino Day and Kids Day on Sunday. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Rogerson said more than 4,000 people entered the park within the first hour on Sunday. The Ex's revenues are trending up at around 12 per cent to start this year's tour in Winnipeg. JOHN WOODS / FREE PRESS Imrose Dhaliwal, front left, Sirat Sran, front right, Sahipbep Dhaliwal, back left, and Simrandeep Dhaliwal, back right, enjoy the Outlaw ride at the Red River Ex Tuesday. Safety measures have been beefed up this year, including a mile of new fencing, more lit-up areas to prohibit outsiders from throwing objects over the fence, additional cameras, and enough security officers to ensure there is at least one guard for every 250 guests. 'We want to make sure that everybody feels safe at all times and doesn't have to worry,' Rogerson said. 'Let us worry about those bad guys, and we'll take care of that.' The Ex concludes on Sunday.
