Forgotten Man Utd wonderkid reveals transfer 'mess' after year as free agent

Ex-Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah remains confident of finding a club despite last playing in April 2023 at Bayer Leverkusen and being a free agent for 12 months It's no surprise to hear footballer's are shopped around to clubs. It may not even be a surprise to know it happens without their knowledge. But that parties players don't even know are attempting to speak to clubs on their behalf, indicates the opportunism present sometimes in the transfer market. Former Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah has learned as much in his year without a club. ‌ The 27-year-old, who f irst made his name with the Red Devils under Louis van Gaal, last played for Bayer Leverkusen in April 2023 before leaving the club the following year having failed to make an appearance in their title-winning season under Xabi Alonso. And following that Fosu-Mensah has spent 12 months as a free agent and learned about a new aspect of the footballing world. ‌ The defender has experienced plenty of difficulties in his career. The Dutchman has been impacted by managerial changes — Van Gaal was replaced by Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford who spoke of 'great potential' and promised 'plenty of opportunities' before offering just one Premier League start in a season — seen a loan opportunity end via a horrific cruciate ligament injury and most recently failed to find a club after being shown the door by Leverkusen. And as a result of that final blow, Fosuh-Mensah has found himself the subject of agent talks despite never coming into contact with the representatives himself. It's a situation that he has deemed a 'mess' "There was a couple of situations with agents here and there, which was a bit of a mess," he said. "People were speaking on my name who I never even had contact with. "I would say like 80 per cent of the agents who were approaching clubs and people I didn't even know, who I didn't even had contact with. I think that was a big mess." That period included talks with Championship clubs. 'Some of them I was aware of, some of them I wasn't,' Fosu-Mensah added. ‌ The defender, who saw spells on loan with Crystal Palace and Fulham while at United, has spent time training with boyhood Ajax in recent months to ensure fitness. And despite his experiences, is confident he will find a new team to represent. 'Last season was the first time in my career that I've spent without a team,' Fosu-Mensah said. 'At this age it's quite early and I think quite strange for people. 'I know I've been working hard and hard work won't go unnoticed. That's what I believe. 'If you stay at home, you do nothing and then you think 'boom, OK, I'm going to go this club or that club', no, that's not how it works, that's not my mentality. It's definitely a fresh start and I've been working hard.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. The 39-year-old won just 5 of his 25 games in charge at Home Park. Plymouth were eventually relegated to League One despite an upturn in form under Miron Muslic. SunSport transfer expert Alan Nixon claims Rooney is now a target for non-league Macclesfield. Ex-Manchester United midfielder Robbie Savage is currently Macclesfield's head coach. But he is being eyed by Forest Green Rovers, with Nixon claiming Rooney is on the club's radar should Savage leave. Macclesfield emphatically sealed promotion from the Northern Premier League last season, amassing over 100 points. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Savage joined last summer and has won 40 of his 51 games in charge. Since leaving Plymouth, Rooney has worked as a pundit for Amazon Prime. Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney lands new job working alongside fellow Premier League icon The former Manchester United striker first went into management with US side DC United in 2020. He has since taken the reins at Derby County and Birmingham, before his ill-fated tenure in Devon. Rooney recently turned out for England at the annual charity game Soccer Aid. Wayne Rooney's record-breaking career WAYNE Rooney took the football world by storm when he made his debut for 2002 with Everton. He quickly became the club's youngest-ever goalscorer aged 16 years and 342 days and was named the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year. The striker joined Manchester United in 2004 and spent 13 years at Old Trafford. He went on to make 559 appearances for the Red Devils and scored 253 goals. To this day he is still the club's all-time leading goalscorer. Following his spell with United, Rooney returned to Everton for a season. He also spent one-season stints with D.C. United and Derby County at the end of his career. As well as his impressive club career, Rooney is also England's second-highest goalscorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances, behind only Harry Kane. After hanging up his boots, the England icon turned to a career in management. He took charge of Derby County in 2020 and managed to just about save the club from relegation from the Championship at the end of his first season. However, with Derby handed a 21-point deduction the following campaign, he was unable to keep them up again and subsequently left. Then came a 15-month spell in charge of MLS side D.C. United. He failed to impress during his time in Washington and parted ways with the club at the end of the 2023 regular season. Rooney was controversially handed the Birmingham job in October 2023, replacing John Eustace with the club doing well and sixth in the Championship table. However, in 15 games he suffered nine defeats and managed just two wins. He was sacked in January 2024 with Birmingham down in 20th. The club were relegated to League One at the end of the campaign. He returned to management in May with Plymouth Argyle but managed just five wins in 25 games. The United legend now finds himself out of work once again. And he refused to be drawn on his immediate future, suggesting punditry was currently his focus. Rooney said: "Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. "I'm enjoying it. So, that's where I'll be."

Gary Neville left stunned by Liverpool after 'incredible' £10m transfer

Gary Neville has been left stunned by Liverpool raking in £10million for Trent Alexander-Arnold - despite the full-back only having one month remaining on his contract. Real Madrid announced the signing of the full-back ahead of the transfer window opening. Alexander-Arnold, 26, heads to the Spanish capital to link up with Los Blancos in time for the beginning of the Club World Cup. Real have been keen to secure his signature early, and saw an approach to the Reds turned down in January. The new La Liga star has signed a six-year contract at the Bernabeu and Les Merengues handed Liverpool an £8.4m fee. The Reds also save a month of Alexander-Arnold's salary as Real Madrid pick up the tab to see the Anfield side earn a tidy £10m package. The Spanish giants will be relieved to have a right-back at their disposal having seen Federico Valverde and Lucas Vasquez fulfill the role after Dani Carvajal was ruled out for the season. New boss Xabi Alonso will be able to call upon Alexander-Arnold from the beginning of his tenure. Ex-Manchester United captain and Salford City co-owner Neville is in disbelief at the deal. Though, he can understand the thought process the Club World Cup hopefuls went through. "Honestly, no, I mean, I'm stunned by that really, that £10m has changed hands for, but there is £100m pounds at stake in this World Club Championship and Real Madrid have got a great chance of doing it," he said on the It's Called Soccer podcast on the US Overlap channel. "So you imagine if he plays in this tournament, they haven't got a right back that's playing there naturally at this moment in time. So it could be money well spent in four or five weeks. "I just find it crazy that you're spending £10m to have a player for five, six games. It's incredible." Neville has been impressed with Liverpool's work so far this summer. The Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and look set to add Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to their ranks too. He said: "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign."
