Andrew Cuomo expected to run as independent in NYC mayor's race, with a proposal
(NewsNation) — Ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is expected to announce this week that he is staying in the race for New York City mayor as an independent, sources told Nexstar's NewsNation. A source close to Cuomo's campaign said he is set to officially announce his plans to stay in the race as an independent while offering a proposal. Sources tell NewsNation that Cuomo will ask all candidates other than Zohran Mamdani to pledge that any candidate who is not in the lead by mid-September will drop out of the race, himself included. This expected announcement arrives on the heels of Cuomo conceding to Mamdani in the Democratic mayoral primary last month. Mamdani, who is also a member of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, had a significant lead over Cuomo. Cuomo told his supporters at the time, 'Tonight was not our night. Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani's night.' Mamdani won the primary by 12 percentage points. In a statement after it was called, he said, 'Democrats spoke in a clear voice, delivering a mandate for an affordable city, a politics of the future, and a leader unafraid to fight back against rising authoritarianism.' After the results were called, Cuomo's spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, said, 'We'll be continuing conversations with people from all across the city while determining next steps. Extremism, division and empty promises are not the answer to this city's problems, and while this was a look at what motivates a slice of our primary electorate, it does not represent the majority.' Cuomo announced he was running for mayor of New York in March, via a video announcement. During the 17-minute video, he said, in part: 'Our city is in crisis. That's why I am running to be Mayor of New York City. We need government to work. We need effective leadership.' Cuomo is expected to be joining two other candidates running as independents. Current Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, announced in June he would be running for re-election as an independent after federal corruption charges were dismissed against him at the request of the Justice Department in April. Former federal prosecutor Jim Walden is also running, and previously told NewsNation that he is the 'only true independent in the race' and has been an 'independent for almost twenty years.' 'I am glad Andrew has agreed to adopt my pledge,' Walden told NewsNation in a statement in response to Cuomo's move. 'I hope Eric and Curtis [Sliwa] sign on as well. Putting New York's best interests over our personal ambitions is critical at this moment.' Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa vowed during a WABC 770 AM radio appearance that he's 'not going anywhere.' 'I'm in it until Nov. 4,' he said. 'Andrew Cuomo lost his primary and hides in the Hamptons,' Curtis Sliwa told NewsNation Sunday. 'Eric Adams skipped his and fled to Fort Lauderdale. Now, they're both running as independents to cling to relevance.' 'I'm the only candidate with a major party nomination, a 50-year record of serving New Yorkers and a real path to victory,' Sliwa added. 'While they play musical chairs on a sinking ship, I'm out campaigning in NYC, listening, leading, and fighting to win it for the people. Let the voters decide this November.' The general election is scheduled for Nov. 4. Some recent polls show that if Cuomo runs, Mamdani would have a lead with about 35 percent, with the ex-governor following behind at about 30 percent.

Jamaal Bowman blames black health issues on being called the N-word ‘every day'
Ex-New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman is blaming the higher rate of chronic diseases among the black community on being called the 'N-word directly or indirectly every day.' The far-left former 'Squad' member theorized during a roundtable discussion on 'CNN NewsNight,' where he grew animated when referring to 'America's original sin and its disease of hate and racism towards black and brown people,' at times raising his voice. Far-left ex-New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman had an animated appearance on 'CNN NewsNight' in which he blamed chronic health issues in the black community on racism. CNN Advertisement He also hit out on Republicans as a whole, scolding White House official Marc Short for what he views as the sins of the party. 'Your colleagues in the Republican Party do not hold each other accountable when it comes to the racism that comes from the party on a consistent basis,' he erupted, talking over Short. 'You can't be calm about this! I'm a black man in America! The reason why heart disease and cancer and obesity and diabetes are bigger in the black community is because of the stress we carry from having to deal with being called the N-word directly or indirectly every day,' he alleged. Advertisement 'If your colleagues would listen and try to learn and engage and grow, and stop being so hateful, we could have a better country, but unfortunately we're still here.' Former Republican California Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado, striking a calmer tone, attempted to reason with Bowman. 'I understand where you're coming from, sincerely, I really really do, it happens on both sides Jamaal, you might think it happens more on your side … you should see my Twitter feed,' he said before Bowman interrupted, closing his eyes for dramatic effect. 'We have cops beating black people to death,' he wailed. Getty Images Bowman, known for unhinged antics like pulling a Capitol Hill fire alarm during a government shutdown vote in 2023, lost his seat in the 16th Congressional District last year to Westchester County Executive George Latimer. Leading up to the election, Bowman held a rally in the Bronx with fellow 'Squad' member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in which the former congressman bellowed 'we're gonna show them who the f–k we are! We are gonna show f–king AIPAC the power of the motherf–king South Bronx!' He also chanted his own name before grabbing a stool from the stage, waving it in the air and slamming it down on the ground.

Former NY gov David Paterson sues brother for stealing $7 m
Cain and Abel, meet David and Daniel. Ex-New York Gov. David Paterson is accusing his brother of cheating him out of his inheritance — by allegedly tricking their elderly mother into giving him over $7 million before her death. A bombshell lawsuit filed by the former governor claims his younger brother Daniel Paterson, 67, duped mom Portia into transferring the massive sum from her estate to his account through 'undue influence, coercion and excessive persuasion.' The sneaky move allowed Daniel and his attorney wife Eloise to bypass a long-standing will ordering the brothers to split their mom's estate 50-50 — cheating David, 71, out of some $3.5 million, the Manhattan Supreme Court suit alleges. 'She divested herself of assets in excess of $7 million by transferring [the] same to defendants prior to her death in contradiction and contravention of her long-standing last will and testament,' the court documents, filed Monday, state. 4 Former New York Gov David Paterson (left) says his brother Daniel (right) tricked their 94-year-old mother into transferring over $7 million from her estate to him, according to a new lawsuit. Robert Miller Then, after 94-year-old Portia Paterson's death in July, Daniel allegedly tried to claim that their mom died with less than $30,000 to her name in a checking account and an 'inoperable' BMW, the suit alleges. The 55th Governor — a Democrat who was in office between 2008-2010 — is suing his brother, sister-in-law and two nephews for his alleged at least $3.5 million share of Portia's estate. 'There was a conspiracy to conceal that Portia's assets were transferred before her death,' said the former gov's attorney, Paul W. Siegert. 'She had a huge estate. 4 Lt Gov Basil Paterson and wife Portia at fund raising party for peace candidates, at 'Pembles' in 1970. She passed away last July at 94. Jerry Engel/NY Post 'Everybody kept it a secret,' Siegert said, 'then we found out about it.' Daniel, who has worked for the state court system's office of diversity and inclusion, told a reporter that 'this must be a scam call' when reached by phone Tuesday, and quickly hung up. He did not return repeated messages asking for comment. Portia Paterson was married for 61 years to Basil Paterson, who was the first black vice chair of the National Democratic Party, and the first black secretary of state of New York. 4 The former governor's lawsuit alleges that leading up to her death, Daniel and his attorney wife Eloise (center) tricked the 94-year-old to transfer millions through 'undue influence, coercion and excessive persuasion.' AP She was a longtime school teacher at P.S. 116 in Jamaica, a guidance counselor at Queens College, and was a known advocate for disabled students like her son David, who is legally blind. The ex-gov claims he only learned about the alleged 'unjust enrichment' last month after Daniel filed an affidavit to settle his mother's estate in surrogate's court. David's attorney then said he got a notice from the court, leading to the shocking discovery that his brother was claiming their late mother only had a $27,000 bank account and an 'inoperable' 2011 BMW 5-series valued at $2,000. On top of that, the affidavit claimed $8,500 in funeral expenses to be subtracted from the estate. That means the former governor's share of what was once his mother's sizable estate would be a mere $10,250. 4 Basil Paterson, his wife Portia, and their sons Daniel and David at JFK airport in 1970. Vic DeLucia/NY Post 'Even Portia's lawyer of 30 years – who wrote her will – did not know that Portia had transferred $7,000,000 in assets,' Siegert said. Daniel, the executor of Portia's estate, allegedly never even notified her estate lawyers of her death, Siegert claimed. 'How could she die in July of 2024, and we only find out almost a year later that her will was not being probated and then out of the blue, we get a notice from the surrogate's court that her net estate is $21,500,' the attorney said. 'Draw your own conclusions.'

Ex-NY Rep. Joe Crowley's 25yo standout son dies from rare cancer: ‘Genuine love of life'
Ex-New York Rep. Joe Crowley's 25-year-old son — a Marine and Naval Academy grad — has died from a rare cancer, his grieving dad revealed over the Memorial Day weekend. The Democratic former Big Apple congressman disclosed in 2023 that his oldest son, Cullen, had been diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumors just seven months after he graduated from the prestigious military academy as a second lieutenant. 'With heavy hearts, Kasey, Kenzie, Liam, and I share the passing of our beloved son and brother, Cullen Crowley,' Joe Crowley posted to X on Sunday, referring to his wife and two other kids. Advertisement 'When we think of Cullen, we can't help but smile. He radiated an infectious and genuine love of life — one that lifted the spirits of everyone around him,' Crowley wrote. Former New York City Rep. Joe Crowley's 25-year-old son, Naval Academy grad Cullen, passed away Sunday after a battle with cancer. '[Cullen] became a Midshipman in 2018, a Marine in 2022, and continued his service at Quantico until retiring in 2024 following his diagnosis,' Crowley wrote. Advertisement Cullen retired from the Marine Corps last year as a first lieutenant. Crowley repped the Bronx and Queens before being shockingly trounced by then-political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018. Cullen Crowley retired from the Marines last year as a first lieutenant. Crowley lost the primary to AOC the same night he first dropped Cullen off at the Naval Academy, the ex-rep told The Hill in 2022. Advertisement In 2023, Cullen underwent '15 hours of surgery' to remove tumors in his abdomen and kidney. The cancer had already spread to the young man's bones, but his dad said they believed he still had a fighting chance. 'He stayed strong throughout — just as he has since his diagnosis,' Crowley wrote at the time of his son after surgery. 'He's a Marine after all.' Advertisement On Sunday, the father said of Cullen, 'He never let the odds define him. 'Instead, he met each day with the same joy and gratitude for life.'

NY Parole Board pushes cop killer's parole hearing back until after primary
The state's far-left Parole Board has quietly delayed a decision on releasing one of New York City's most notorious cop killers until after the June 24 primary — prompting critics to speculate the move was done to help former Gov. Andrew Cuomo's NYC mayoral bid. The 16-member board — 11 of whom were appointed or re-appointed by Cuomo — was scheduled last month to review whether David McClary, a gangbanger who ruthlessly assassinated Police Officer Edward Byrne in 1988, should be released. Byrne was a 22-year-old rookie, sitting in his patrol car in Queens, when he was shot five times in the head. 4 NYPD cop Edward Byrne was shot dead in 1988 while sitting in his patrol car. Now, the board won't hear McClary's bid for freedom until July, sources told The Post. If the board ultimately releases McClary, 59, he'll be the 44th New York cop killer set free the past eight years, The Post exclusively reported last month. Republican mayoral candidate and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa said he has 'no doubt' Cuomo pulled strings to delay the hearing to avoid the negative publicity of McClary's potential release heading into a Democratic mayoral primary the ex-governor is favored to win. 4 The state parole board has delayed its decision on whether to release David McClary until after the Democratic mayoral primary. 'This makes sense since he still controls a majority of the [parole] board,' he said. 'It behooves him to push this off as far as he can because it's his Achilles heel.' 'He does not want this to be brought up. Every time it is, it's like a dagger to his political heart because he's now trying to run as a law-and-order candidate.' 4 Ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed or reappointed 11 of the 16 current state parole board members. Stephen Yang 4 Curtis Sliwa claims the parole board delayed its consideration of the McClary case to help Cuomo in the mayoral primary. Luiz C. Ribeiro for New York Post Most New Yorkers are unaware how many cop killers Cuomo's handpicked board members have released, Sliwa said, adding 'many are stunned' to hear the number when he tells them while campaigning for his own mayoral run. Councilman Robert Holden, a Queens Democrat who typically sides with Republicans, said 'the fact that Cuomo's parole board is delaying a vote on a cop killer until after the June primaries reeks of political gamesmanship.' 'It's a disgraceful insult to the memory of our fallen heroes and a reminder that Andrew Cuomo always puts his ambitions ahead of public safety,' he said. The New York Parole Board did not return messages. Referring to Sliwa, Cuomo spokesman Jason Elan said 'we don't comment on conspiracy theories, even ones peddled by a bereted clown.'
