Rangers ‘in talks to sign Norway international' as Light Blues' transfer business ramps up

His arrival follows those of Lyall Cameron and Max Aarons as the Light Blues look to beef up their squad ahead of the Champions League qualifiers. Rangers take on Panathinaikos in the first leg of their second round qualifying tie at Ibrox on July 21, with the squad needing to be submitted four days previously. Gers boss Martin is in the hunt for defensive additions, with the Light Blues understood to be interested in Wolves centre-back Nasser Djiga and Peterborough's Emmanuel Fernandez. But he could also be adding another midfielder. The Daily Mail report that the Light Blues are in talks with Luton over the signing of Thelo Aasgaard. The 23-year old only joined the Hatters in January in a £3million move from Wigan. But Luton's relegation to the Championship means it's likely he'll be on the move again this summer. Born in Liverpool, Aasgaard plays internationally for Norway. He represented the country from under-16 level through to under-21s. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked In March this year, Aasgaard had a senior Norway debut to remember when he scored and assisted in a thumping 5-0 win over Moldova in World Cup qualifying. Aasgaard was in the Liverpool academy as a youngster before joining Wigan in 2016. He made his first team breakthrough with the Latics in 2020 and went on to make 164 league appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals. Aasgaard moved on to Luton in January this year, scoring twice in 17 games. He couldn't prevent the club from suffering a second straight relegation. 4 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Russell Martin has already missed out on Kwame Poku but he's now hoping to land his team-mate instead. His form down south grabbed the attention of several clubs including Rangers and Norwich City, with the Canaries failing to seal a deal for him back in January. Now it's the Light Blues who are keen to land him this summer as Martin looks to add to his defensive options. The Rangers Review claim the Ibrox are locked in negotiations with Peterborough to sign him in a permanent transfer. Fernandez isn't the only defender Martin is interested in signing from an English club though. It's suggested the new Rangers boss is also looking to sign Nasser Djiga on loan from Wolves as well. The towering centre-back joined the Premier League club last summer from Red Star Belgrade in a deal worth around £10million. He only made six appearances for the club last season, though, and could head up north for more game time this year. The 22-year-old is believed to be high up on Martin's agenda alongside Fernandez. Meanwhile, Rangers have confirmed the signing of midfielder Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked Martin has linked up with the centre-mid once again after he played a key role in his Southampton side that secured promotion to the Premier League. He spent last season on loan at Leeds and made 39 appearances across all competitions. He's penned a three-year deal at Ibrox. Rangers land third signing of the summer as Russell Martin reunites with Premier League star

The Gers have confirmed Rothwell's arrival on a three-year contract and he'll wear the number six shirt. Rothwell has made over 200 appearances in the English Championship and played in England's top flight with the Cherries. Martin knows the 30-year-old well after bringing him to St Mary's whilst he was Southampton boss in January 2024. Rothwell played the rest of that season and was pivotal in their promotion charge towards the Premier League. And he has huge admiration for Martin, he told a More than a Match podcast: 'He'd handwritten letters and posted them under the players door before the play-off final. "I think just to thank everyone and show what they mean to him and the team. "I'd never heard a manager do that before. I think that just typified the type of guy he is. "He was all about the players, you could see last season they loved playing for him. "I think he brought the whole club together at Southampton. "Every member of staff spoke so highly of him." Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked The combative midfielder, who generally plays in the number eight position, returned to the Championship last season. He played a key role in Leeds' promotion success, with the Elland Road side going up as league winners. Rothwell made 36 appearances for Daniel Farke' side. Rothwell, who is capped at various ages for England but not the full team, could qualify to play for Scotland through his gran. Rangers are just weeks away from their massive Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos so strengthening the squad before the clash at Ibrox on July 22 is vital.
