Urbana, St. Joe appeared on DHS list of ‘sanctuary jurisdictions'
ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Last week, a list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' was issued by the Department of Homeland Security. Since then, the list no longer appears on the DHS's website, but jurisdictions that appeared on the list have different opinions about what it could mean for their community. The list, which named cities, counties, and states all throughout the United States, identified areas that are interfering with government deportations, according to the Trump Administration. This came after Executive Order 14287 was signed April 28, calling for a list of states and local jurisdictions that 'obstruct the enforcement of Federal immigration laws.' Illinois bill on governor's desk would require law enforcement to work with federal gun tracing database Per the EO, each jurisdiction would be notified of their 'defiance of Federal immigration law enforcement and any potential violations of Federal criminal law.' The list was also meant to be used by the Office of Management and Budget to identify federal funds in the sanctuary jurisdictions that may be suspended or terminated. The list was published May 29, but as of May 31, a 'Page Not Found' message appeared instead. While the list was only publicly up on the DHS' website for a short time, Illinois cities and counties that were named took notice. Seven cities in Illinois appeared on the list, including Urbana and St. Joseph. WCIA reached out to both Urbana's Mayor, DeShawn Williams, and St. Joseph's Mayor, Jim Page. Williams said Urbana has been a Sanctuary City for nearly 40 years –and they don't plan on changing that. 'When cities like ours face federal threats or funding pressure for standing by these values, it's not just a matter of policy —it's a matter of principle and moral responsibility.' Page did not immediately respond to requests for comment. WCIA's sister station WGN reported that six of Illinois' 102 counties were included on the DHS' list. Effingham County was among the 102 counties named. Joshua Douthit, Board Chairman of Effingham County, shared a statement in response to the DHS placing Effingham County on the list of 'Sanctuary Jurisdictions.' Pritzker says he will veto any budget with 'broad tax increases' 'Effingham County remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of our residents. While recent DHS reports have categorized our county as a 'sanctuary jurisdiction,' we want to unequivocally affirm that Effingham County supports legal immigration and fully endorses the federal enforcement efforts of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency,' Douthit said. Douthit added that the county made it clear that they are not a sanctuary county by adopting resolution 24-13, and said they will not spend tax dollars on the 'immigration crisis.' 'Effingham County welcomes those who seek to enter and remain in the United States through legal means and values the contributions of immigrants who comply with the laws governing our nation. We will continue to follow all legal guidelines regarding our ability to cooperate with federal authorities on immigration issues in the interest of public safety, legal integrity, and the well-being of our residents,' Douthit said. The DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Homeland Security removes list of ‘sanctuary' cities after pushback; most WA counties listed
Washington state and most of its counties were among a list of more than 500 jurisdictions believed by President Donald Trump's Administration to have impeded the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The list, initially posted on the Department of Homeland Security's website at appears to have been taken down since it was posted. Visitors will get a 'Page Not Found' error. KIRO 7 used an archive website, Wayback Machine, to see what the website initially said. The page read: 'Executive Order 14287: Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens requires that a list of states and local jurisdictions that obstruct the enforcement of Federal immigration laws (sanctuary jurisdictions) be published. Sanctuary jurisdictions including cities, counties, and states that are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities. Sanctuary cities protect dangerous criminal aliens from facing consequences and put law enforcement in peril. The list below was created to identify sanctuary jurisdictions, which are determined by factors like compliance with federal law enforcement, information restrictions, and legal protections for illegal aliens. Each jurisdiction listed will receive formal notification of its non-compliance with Federal statutes. DHS demands that these jurisdictions immediately review and revise their policies to align with Federal immigration laws and renew their obligation to protect American citizens, not dangerous illegal aliens. Note that the list can be reviewed and changed at any time and will be updated regularly. No one should act on this information without conducting their own evaluation of the information." Washington state was listed on it, as were all but four counties, and a handful of specific cities. It should be noted that Yakima County itself was not on the list, but the city of Yakima was. The cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Olympia and Yakima were listed. According to Reuters and other national reports, the site was scrubbed following criticism from the National Sheriff's Union, which said that a list of non-compliant' sheriffs could damage the relationship between the Trump administration and law enforcement. The National Sheriffs' Association represents more than 3,000 elected sheriffs across the U.S. and over 10,000 individuals. A letter from the association's president, Kiernan Donahue, from Idaho, said: 'This list was created without any input, criteria of compliance, or a mechanism for how to object to the designation. Sheriffs nationwide have no way to know what they must do or not do to avoid this arbitrary label. The completion and publication of this list has not only violated the core principles of trust, cooperation, and partnership with fellow law enforcement, but it also has the potential to strain the relationship between Sheriffs and the White House administration. This is an unfortunate and unnecessary erosion of unity and collaboration with law enforcement and the enforcement of the rule of law at a time when that unity is needed most. This decision by DHS could create a vacuum of trust that may take years to overcome. DHS has done a terrible disservice to President Trump and the Sheriffs of this country. The President's goals to reduce crime, secure the Borders, and make America safer have taken a step backward. In a meeting today called by the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA), with members of DHS, no political appointee for the administration could explain who compiled, proofed, and verified the list before publication. The NSA believes that the criteria for evaluation used by DHS must be published immediately, and they must provide a legitimate reason to evaluate those not cooperating with ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies. These are not just common-sense efforts; they are urgent necessities. DHS and the Administration should publicly denounce the report to demonstrate accountability. The Sheriffs of this country feel betrayed. The current list must be removed immediately, and DHS must release an apology to the Sheriffs and the American people. The National Sheriffs' Association is one of the largest non-profit associations of law enforcement professionals in the United States, representing more than 3,000 elected sheriffs across the nation, and with a total membership of approximately 10,000 individuals. NSA is dedicated to raising the level of professionalism among sheriffs, their deputies, and others in the field of law enforcement, public safety, and criminal justice. Throughout its eighty-four-year history, NSA has also served as an information resource for all law enforcement, as well as local, state, and federal government agencies.'

Burlington mayor responds to city being named ‘sanctuary jurisdiction'
BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – After the Department of Homeland Security released Friday a list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' that do not comply with federal immigration law, Burlington mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, whose city was specifically named along with Winooski, Montpelier, and the state of Vermont as a while, said she disagreed that the city is violating federal law. 'Burlington has had a Fair & Impartial Policing Policy for years – this policy offers important guidance to local law enforcement officers, both to prevent discrimination on the basis of protected classifications, and to provide explicit clarity that our local police agency is not charged with enforcement of civil immigration law. 'This policy is crucial for maintaining trust between the community and the police department, and it ensures that people can call for help without fear of discrimination based on immigration status or other protected class.' Neverthless, Lebanon and Hanover in New Hampshire were specifically named on the list. Mulvaney-Stanak says she has no intention of changing the city's policies to match federal demands. 'Burlington, like other communities identified as sanctuary jurisdictions, has a proud history of welcoming immigrants and refugees to our City, and we will not back down from ensuring the safety of all who live, work and visit our community.' White House names Pennsylvania cities, counties sanctuary jurisdictions 'defying' immigration law
(WHTM) – The White House on Friday released a list of hundreds of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' allegedly breaking immigration law. Eleven Pennsylvania counties were listed, including Adams and Dauphin counties in the Midstate. 'I have a lot of questions of what qualifies us as a sanctuary county,' said Douglas. 'I'm not sure there's any actual legislation that we've passed of any kind. I don't know what the criteria they're using for what they're considering a sanctuary county is.' The Department of Homeland Security says the list was generated as part of 'Executive Order 14287: Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens.' 'Sanctuary jurisdictions including cities, counties, and states that are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities,' said Homeland Security. 'Sanctuary cities protect dangerous criminal aliens from facing consequences and put law enforcement in peril.' Homeland Security says each jurisdiction will receive 'formal notification of its non-compliance' and will be asked to review policies to align with federal law. Douglas says he has 'more questions than answers' regarding the list, but insisted that 'Dauphin County follows the law and will continue to do that.' White House IDs 96 Illinois counties, 7 cities on list of ‘sanctuary jurisdictions'
CHICAGO (WGN) — Seven cities in Illinois and all but six of the state's 102 counties are included on a list of 'sanctuary jurisdictions' issued by the Department of Homeland Security that federal officials claim are interfering with mass deportations 'endangering Americans and law enforcement in order to protect violent criminal illegal aliens.' The list of hundreds of states, counties and municipalities was issued per Executive Order 14287, signed last month, that required DHS to identify governments deemed to be interfering with immigration policies. According to DHS, the public governments named are cities or municipalities rated on several factors: If they identify themselves are sanctuary jurisdictions; their compliance with federal officials enforcing immigration laws; the sharing of information with immigration law enforcement; and if they offer protections to people in the country illegally.
