Heatwave soars in Europe as Spain hits 46C and neighbours on red alert
Southern Europe is roasting in an unrelenting heatwave which shows no sign of easing. Record-breaking temperatures are sparking emergency health warnings, and growing fears of wildfires pushing resources to the brink, reports Spain has become the epicentre of the crisis, as the mercury soared into the mid-40s Celsius across parts of Andalusia over the weekend. READ MORE: Holidaymakers consider leaving Barcelona just an hour after arriving Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp, click the link to join In the town of El Granado, a whopping 46C was recorded on Saturday, setting a new national record for June according to Spain's national weather service. Cities like Seville also experienced punishing conditions, with residents and tourists scrambling for shade and relief. Spain's meteorological agency, AEMET, has warned that this June might become the hottest on record. Health authorities have urged people to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity. Tragically, a woman in Barcelona passed away on Saturday after finishing her shift as a street cleaner, with officials believing the extreme temperatures were likely a factor. Red heat alerts - the highest level of warning - have been issued across parts of Portugal, Italy and Croatia, while amber warnings blanket much of southern and central Europe, including France, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. In Portugal's capital Lisbon, authorities fear that strong winds, bone-dry vegetation and intense heat could trigger wildfires, mirroring similar concerns across southern Europe. Italy is also battling dangerous conditions, with red alerts active in 21 cities by Sunday morning, including Rome, Milan and Naples. Hospitals have reported a surge in heat-related admissions, particularly among elderly people, cancer patients, and those experiencing homelessness. Some hospitals, such as the Ospedale dei Colli in Naples, have introduced dedicated 'heatstroke pathways' to speed up life-saving cooling treatments. Local governments are working to protect vulnerable residents. Rome has offered free swimming pool access to people over 70, while Bologna has opened climate shelters with drinking water and air conditioning. In several regions - Lazio, Tuscany, Calabria, Puglia, and Umbria - authorities are considering temporary bans on outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day. The heatwave's reach extends well beyond Spain and Italy. Serbia has recorded its highest temperature since records began in the 19th century, while Slovenia logged its hottest June day ever on Saturday. In North Macedonia, temperatures climbed to 42C on Friday, and elsewhere across the Balkans, countries are struggling with temperatures exceeding 40C, putting enormous strain on hospitals and public health systems. According to the BBC Weather Centre, the extreme conditions are being driven by a powerful area of high pressure lodged over Europe, forcing dry air to descend and warm rapidly. As this system shifts eastwards in the coming days, it is expected to drag high temperatures towards Germany, France, and even the UK. With some of the hottest days still ahead this week, officials are warning the public not to underestimate the threat. Vulnerable groups - including older adults, children, and those with chronic illnesses - are being urged to take extra care.

Tourist hotspots in Spain could be left without water as authorities sound alarm
Residents and tourists in Pollensa, a popular holiday destination in northern Majorca, are being urged to consume as little water as possible following a breakdown in supplies from the Alcudia desalination plant. A series of restrictions have been introduced until the issue is resolved, all while temperatures sit around 36C today on the island, reports To make matters worse, on Monday morning (June 30), it was reported that some parts could be left without water. READ MORE: Tourists put on notice after Spain introduces new rules affecting accommodation Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp , click the link to join Those in the region have been prohibited from filling their swimming pools, watering their gardens and cleaning their vehicles and terraces, with water being reserved for only essential needs. A spokesperson for the local water board stated: "We continue to recommend using water only for strictly essential needs. "We apologise for the inconvenience," they added. The statement continued: "We continue to implement all emergency measures to maintain the water supply: activation of the Gotmar and Can Colet wells, which, together with our other wells, are operating 24 hours a day. "Despite these efforts, the supply is affected and there may be drops in pressure or temporary service interruptions". According to the Water Board, supply cuts will occur in Llenaira, Es Pinaret, Putxet, Gotmar, Can Singala, Urbanización de Bóquer, Air Base and Siller. The cuts are expected to take place between 1pm and 7pm local time (2pm and 8pm BST) on Monday. There is growing concern in the region, particularly due to the fact that Pollensa hotels and apartments are nearly at 100% occupancy as the busy tourist season begins. Pollensa has a high tourist-to-resident ratio, one of the highest in the Balearic Islands. In August, the number of tourists can exceed the number of residents. Specifically, Pollensa has a tourist-to-resident ratio of 24.8 - significantly higher than the Balearic average of 10.25 and more than four times that of Barcelona on the mainland. In August last year alone, the town had just under 59.5k tourists. The ancient town has been heralded as one of Majorca's must-see areas. It features attractive narrow streets and an impressive main square lined with cafés, restaurants and bars. All this is just a few miles from Port de Pollenca, a resort particularly popular with Brits for holidays and second homes. The town has several places of interest to visit, including the still operational Roman bridge, "Pont Roma", and the Puig de Pollensa, a small mountain topped by a monastery, just outside the town. The Plaça Mayor, dominated by a Parroquial church dating back to the 18th century, is the scene of one of Majorca's best Sunday markets, attracting many nationalities. The square offers several good cafes where you can enjoy a café con leche and watch the world go by.

Lorraine Kelly details rule break at Buckingham Palace as she says 'I'm in trouble'
ITV star Lorraine Kelly has admitted to breaking one strict rule while visiting Buckingham Palace in the past, after Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo's recent viral video. Lorraine Kelly has cheekily admitted to flouting a major rule during her visit to Buckingham Palace, amidst discussions about Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo's recent viral dance video filmed on the palace's grand staircase. The ITV favourite was reflecting on the reality stars' antics, which some have interpreted as a spoof of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's "Baby Mama" dance clip released when the Duchess was in labour. With strict no-filming rules at the Royal residence, the Made In Chelsea couple's video has raised eyebrows. Despite describing Jamie and Sophie as "a bit naughty" for their mischievous video, Lorraine couldn't help but share her own rebellious moment at the palace. Commentator Paul Brand expressed his disapproval, saying: "I mean, they were breaking protocol. I personally feel that as a very aggrieved news broadcaster, if I did that, I'd definitely be off to the tower. "They've got really strict rules about filing in Buckingham Palace and then if you're an influencer, you can get away with it! You can get away with anything. I hear that you got away with it, Lorraine?" To which Lorraine confessed: "Well, I may or may not have taken a sneaky photograph. I'll tell you for why, that painting reminded me so much of Joe Lycett! I had to take a picture because that's Joe Lycett! He's had another life." ITV audiences were treated to the snapshot Lorraine captured, showing her posing thoughtfully in front of a painting, hand on chin, reports The presenter added: "I know I'm not supposed to do that, I'll get into trouble, I shan't ever do it again." Curious, one of her guests asked if she got into trouble for taking the snap as Lorraine replied:" No, I don't know that they knew... well they do now, so I'm in trouble!" Although this wasn't Lorraine's only breach of Royal protocol, as she once posed with TV editor Victoria Kennedy in the grand hallway for an Instagram post.

Madeleine McCann 'breakthrough' as 'celebrating' police 'may have found clue'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The ongoing mystery of Madeleine McCann's disappearance might have taken a dramatic turn following last week's search in Portugal, according to a former top police official. Nearly 18 years after the three year old vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, this potential breakthrough is raising hopes and interest once more. Christian Brueckner, currently incarcerated in Germany for crimes unrelated, remains the main suspect in what German prosecutors have termed a 'probable murder'. Despite extensive investigative work, direct proof linking him to the case has proved difficult to pin down. With the recent search focusing on an isolated spot around Praia da Luz, where authorities had dug before, the investigation saw scores of officers and forensic specialists using sophisticated technology such as ground-penetrating radar over three days. READ MORE - Edinburgh woman sues charity and earns £8k compensation payout over 'holiday row' READ MORE - Edinburgh mum woke in England after ending up in three month long coma Former lead of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre until 2010, Jim Gamble, commented to that celebrations observed amongst the officers at the end of the operation may hint that they have found an important clue. His words were: "They wouldn't send 60 officers, forensic experts, earth-penetrating radar, and dig for three days without a clear plan. "When police are celebrating at the end of a search like this, it usually means they've found something worth following up on.", reports the Express. "This kind of reaction is not given lightly. It often signals a breakthrough in what can be a painstaking and methodical process." Madeleine vanished while holidaying with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and her two younger siblings, catapulting the family into an international media frenzy as the pursuit to locate the little girl commanded front page news across the globe. Brueckner, who has a record of criminal charges including drug dealing and sexual crimes against youngsters, resided in the Algarve during Madeleine's disappearance. (Image: (Image: PA)) (Image: (Image: Andy Commins / Daily Mirror)) German detectives suggest he played a part in Madeleine's kidnap and potential homicide, although Brueckner has consistently refuted these claims. The inquiry stays underway and energetic, with law enforcement frequently revisiting prior evidence and chasing fresh lines of inquiry – the recent probing exercises are part of this ongoing work. Kate and Gerry McCann have ceaselessly sought answers and hold onto hope that the latest exploration could at last provide some closure after close to two decades of ambiguity. They continue to advocate for anyone with even a shred of information to step forth and aid the continuing probe. Should the conjecture about the climax of this recent operation prove true, it might signal an epochal progression in a narrative that has eluded conclusion for 18 years. Even without formal updates, the optimism displayed by officers on film has reignited fervent public and media interest in Madeleine's case, which remains one of history's most closely watched disappearances. Madeleine McCann's unsolved case inevitably grips the nation with every twist, inviting intense media and public vigilance. The enduring strength of the McCanns has propelled the search for their daughter into the public eye, as heartfelt pleas for closure persist. Eyes are peeled for concrete news from the authorities, with hope that clarity about Madeleine's fate may be on the horizon. Though definitive breakthroughs remain unconfirmed, the hint from a past high-ranking officer gives tentative promise that the long-standing enigma could be nearing an end. Mr. Gamble, discussing the hunt extensively on the True Criminals podcast, shared: "I'm an optimist. I believe in my lifetime we will find out what happened and hold anyone responsible to account."

ITV Benidorm icon credits friend for saving her from homelessness
Benidorm legend Crissy Rock, who played Janey York in ITV's hit comedy, has opened up about her lifestyle, which she describes as 'living like a nomad' ITV comedy legend Crissy Rock has candidly revealed her unconventional way of life that she likens to "living like a nomad". The actress, well-known for her portrayal of the Solana hotel's Janey Yorke on Benidorm, is preparing to embark on a nationwide tour and admits to a lifestyle that sees her moving from "couch to couch". Speaking with the 66-year-old Liverpudlian shared: "Me, I'm like a nomad. I live from place to place to place. My wardrobe is just the boot of my car. If it wasn't for my friend, I would be living in a hostel or a cardboard box. When I'm in Liverpool, I go and see her and I have family and that so I just sort of move around from couch to couch." Crissy opened up about why she's adopted a nomadic existence, explaining: "It's just my job, it takes me everywhere." She stressed: "You can't become complacent, because every job is different." While chatting about her eagerly awaited tour, Crissy gave fans a teaser of what to expect as she transforms from Christine Murray into the fabulous Crissy Rock. Amazed by the public response, she confessed: "It's gone berserk. I can't believe it. I'm really excited about it", reports the Daily Star. She alluded to sharing the highs and lows of her journey, intending to cover the ups and downs while ensuring laughter remains at the heart of her story. Crissy remarked: "I think that's how I've coped with my life. Through humour." Crissy has admitted that she's completely on board for a Benidorm revival, despite being busy with her one-woman show. She revealed: "I've heard that the show could come back and I think that it would be brilliant if they did bring it back. But I can't say much, but I would love it to happen. It's up to the writer, and I think that you couldn't say half of the things now. You'd have to be politically correct, so would it be the same? "The full cast, all of them, were brilliant. We had a lovely time. I think it was so popular because people could relate to the characters. They all knew someone who was like that. They could relate to the people who were on the programme." She also suggested a potential storyline for the show's return: "I think it would be fab if Janey Yorke and Joyce Temple-Savage got back and locked horns over who was managing the Solana. That would be good, wouldn't it? Because they hated each other." Currently, Crissy is touring the UK with her show An Evening With Crissy Rock: From Bedlam To Benidorm, promising to deliver the fun in June 2025 and extending the fun into Spring 2026.
