Arsenal target stunning Eze transfer swoop years after leaving star 'in tears'

Arsenal have contacted Eberechi Eze's representatives to discuss signing the Crystal Palace star, who they released aged 13 but are interested in signing this summer Arsenal could be about to offer Eberechi Eze the chance to resurrect his childhood dream. The Gunners are interested the signing the Crystal Palace star, who enjoyed his best season yet last term. Eze, 26, memorably scored the winning goal for Palace in this year's FA Cup final and has made himself regular in England squads. And now the playmaker could be set for Champions League football. ‌ Mirror Football reported on Friday that talks between Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and Eze's representatives have taken place, and the Gunners are now considering triggering his £68million release clause. Arsenal would be competing with north London rivals Tottenham, as new Spurs boss Thomas Frank is understood to be a big fan of the 26-year-old. ‌ But Berta could make use a trump card thanks to Eze's past. The England international played for Arsenal as a youngster, only to be released aged 13 in a crushing blow to his hopes of becoming a professional footballer. "I remember crying in my room for a solid week, my mum telling me that it's going to be okay but not being able to get over it," Eze told the Independent in 2020. "Then I went to Fulham and I was finally starting to enjoy my football again. "We played Arsenal a few months later but, when I went over to shake the academy manager's hand, I started welling up. All the feelings came back." Eze's eventual breakthrough with Queens Park Rangers was testament to his resilience, having also been snubbed by Millwall and Sunderland. The future Wembley hero considered quitting football and getting a part-time job at Tesco before QPR snapped him up. The pain of his early struggles still fuels him, telling BBC Sport in May: "I remember the deflation. But all I kept asking myself was: 'When's the next trial? When's the next trial?'" Should Arsenal pay £68million for Eberechi Eze? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Eze is under contract at Palace until 2027 and the Eagles will be hoping to convince him to stay for at least one more season after they qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup. Their entry, however, is subject to a UEFA decision over whether or not both Palace and French giants Lyon can be in European competition due to shared ownership links. "I really hope that that's not the case and I hope that Palace do get the reward for that (FA Cup win), because of what it took to actually achieve it," Eze commented last month. ‌ "It would be a huge shame if that was the case, but I'm trusting that it will work out in the end. I'm sure it will work itself out and it should work itself out, because there are players who have worked to be in this position. "There are fans who have been with the team throughout the whole season and experienced everything. It would be unfortunate, but I'm positive that it won't be the case."

Why Arsenal left Eberechi Eze 'crying for a week' as Gunners plot £68m bid

Eberechi Eze's career could be about to come full circle if Arsenal are successful in hijacking Tottenham's move for the England midfielder. After a standout season for Crystala Palace, which culminated in the 26-year-old scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final, he is once again hot property. Eze's current contract is understood to contain a £68million release clause which has sparked a scramble for his signature. Tottenham were the bookies' favourites with new manager Thomas Frank keen to land a major signing to kickstarthis reign. Manchester United are also understood to be monitoring Eze's situation as they look to further add to their attack having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and edging towards agreeing a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo. While the likes of Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson, his piers at the time, made the grade, the creative midfielder wasn't so fortunate and was forced to look for a new club. Speaking about the pain of being discarded, Eze told the Independent: 'I remember crying in my room for a solid week, my mum telling me that it's going to be OK but not being able to get over it. 'Then I went to Fulham and I was finally starting to enjoy my football again. 'We played Arsenal a few months later but, when I went over to shake the academy manager's hand, I started welling up. All the feelings came back.' After he was let go by Fulham, Eze had spells at the likes of Reading, Millwall, Sunderland, Bristol City and Swansea. More Trending Eze almost gave up on is dream and took a part-time job at Tesco before being given a chance by QPR. After impressing on loan at Wycombe, he returned to Loftus Road where he became a crowd favourite before his move to Palace in five years ago. Arsenal, Man Utd and Spurs racing to seal transfers with one team left fuming

The transfer window is seeing competition between Premier League clubs Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham as they attempt to get signings over the line in their quest for success The trouble with good players can often be how sought-after they are. If there's a clear path to their signature, perhaps they aren't as spectacular as expected or maybe, if you're lucky, you know something others don't. Tottenham's transfer ambitions this summer are certainly not for unknown, uncut gems and have instead taken the shape of prized Premier League possessions. Laudable, and good moves if they can be pulled off, but the Lilywhites may just find out how problematic such deals can be if you can't get them over the line. ‌ With the arrival of Thomas Frank came a desire to land Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo but Spurs weren't first on the scene. The Cameroon international's interest in a move to Manchester United had already developed but Daniel Levy was not immediately dismayed. ‌ Spurs jumped into the race with a bid worth £10million more than United's own offer when they launched a £70m approach. From the outside it sounds like the bold move required to sign a player who scored 20 Premier League goals last term. But despite holding all the cards: a bigger bid, a familiar face in Frank, and being able to offer Champions League football, it seems the club will have to turn elsewhere. Ruben Amorim's side look set to agree a deal worth £65m, with Mbeumo anticipated to complete a deal next week. Football doesn't always make sense, although Manchester United did finish two places above their rivals in the league despite falling to them in the Europa League final. Perhaps money talks or perhaps the Red Devils' stature remains worth more than more tangible qualities. What may be more frustrating is that Tottenham could once again find themselves as the odd one out, unable to capture the attention of the figure commanding everyone's eyes on the dancefloor that is the transfer window. With the competition of an even fiercer rival, Spurs may be forced to jink and jive to standout. Arsenal could be the team to scupper Tottenham 's back-up plan after 'holding talks' with Eberechi Eze's representatives. ‌ Spurs have long-tracked the Crystal Palace and England star but may struggle to hold a candle to Arsenal's Premier League ambitions after a difficult time in 2024/25. Eze made it on to Spurs' shortlist but it appears the Gunners could jump the queue with Andrea Berta already on the case and in conversations. The Europa League champions cannot even repeat their ploy to land Mbeumo as Eze has a release clause in his contract. The former QPR starlet can be taken from Selhurst Park for £68m, ensuring the 26-year-old has almost the only say in his future. But a scenario where Spurs are left chasing another target is not out of the realms of possibility. The will once again attempt to please, persuade and impress that they are a more suitable option to settle down with over their north London neighbours. ‌ It is the Gunners who can offer a stable environment and will strive for the greatest gold in 2025/26 however. Spurs meanwhile are onto the seventh new face in their dugout since Eze became a Premier League player in 2020 - they will have their work cut out once again. Someone will be left unhappy come the end of the summer. For the moment, Spurs are most at risk.
