FASTag Annual Pass To Be Launched In August: Here's How To Activate It

FASTag Annual Pass: The FASTag annual pass is like a prepaid digital subscription, introduced last month by the Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari. The pass, to be launched in August, has now been listed on the government's National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) website for users to check details such as eligibility, validity, benefits and the application process. What is a FASTag annual pass? The annual pass will be launched on August 15 for Rs 3,000 and will be valid for a year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first. It will be valid only at National Highway and Expressway fee plazas. The process remains standard on toll plazas under state highways or local authorities. The government claims that the pass can save users around Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 per year, compared to paying monthly toll passes. Users don't need to do monthly top-ups or apply for separate passes for different toll plazas. The decision aims at eliminating disputes at toll plazas and reducing wait times, easing congestion. How to activate the FASTag annual pass? The annual pass will be available to non-commercial private vehicles only, such as cars, jeeps and vans. The pass can be activated via the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI's website, and renewal can be done online. The pass will be activated on the existing FASTags; no need to buy a new one. Mr Gadkari earlier revealed that a dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH). The applications can be submitted through the link only. To ease the process next, have a FASTag from a bank or digital wallet like Paytm, ICICI Bank, or HDFC Bank. Also, log in to My FASTag account through the mobile app. After completing the digital payment process, users will receive a confirmation message, and their FASTag pass will be activated. Can users transfer an annual pass to another vehicle? The annual pass is not transferable. It is valid only for the vehicle on which the FASTag is affixed and registered. The pass can't be issued on FASTags with a chassis number only, as the users must update the Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) to activate the annual pass.

NHAI to blacklist FASTags not on windscreen of vehicles

New Delhi: Drivers who don't fix their FASTags on the windshield of their vehicles will face permanent blacklisting of tags, a measure taken in view of the malpractice of people handing out "loose or unfixed tags" for payment of highway-user fee, which leads to congestion at toll plaza lanes. The NHAI company dealing with toll collection and management of highways, IHMCL, has asked federations of toll collectors, highway builders and operators to report such cases for quick action. "Tags-in-hand" have been categorised as "loose tags". Despite repeated advisories against the practice there have been several cases of people handing out FASTag at toll gates for deduction of user fee.

NHAI to blacklist FASTags ‘kept in hand', seeks details from toll operators

NEW DELHI: Drivers who don't fix their FASTags on the windshield of their vehicles will face permanent blacklisting of tags, a measure taken in view of the malpractice of people handing out 'loose or unfixed tags' for payment of highway-user fee, which leads to congestion at toll plaza lanes and sometimes altercations with toll collectors. The NHAI company dealing with toll collection and management of highways, IHMCL, has asked federations of toll collectors, highway builders and operators to report such cases for quick action. 'Tags-in-hand' have been categorised as 'loose tags'. Despite repeated advisories against the practice there have been several cases of people handing out FASTag at toll gates for deduction of user fee. In letters addressed to these federations, IHMCL said, 'This leads to lane-level congestion due to manual handling and violation issues, misuse in closed-loop tolling operations, generation of false chargeback demands and overall disruption of the electronic toll collection system.' The crackdown on such tags gains importance considering NHAI's move to go for multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling and annual toll pass where authenticity and system reliability are key for their successful implementation. IHMCL has also instructed toll operators to give details of misuse of 'exempted FASTags'. Such tags have been issued only to those persons who are exempted from paying toll. In this case, tags carry out a zero digital transaction while passing toll gates as there is no deduction of fee.

Soon FASTag may be used to buy insurance, pay challans

You may soon be able to use your vehicle's FASTag to pay traffic challans , parking fee, insurance premium and for EV charging , in addition to highway tolls . With nearly 11 crore FASTags issued by banks, the govt is exploring ways to expand its use as a flexible payment tool. To take this forward and firm up the next phase of FASTag growth, the road transport and highways ministry and the NHAI on Wednesday held a brainstorming workshop with top officials from the finance ministry and fintech firms. Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said through collaboration with fintechs and other stakeholders, the govt aims at expanding the utility of FASTag into a robust platform that will 'enhance user convenience, streamline transport and mobility services'. Sources said road transport secretary V Umashankar said while FASTag has largely introduced manless tolling and eliminate barriers this can be used for other purposes linked to vehicles, such as paying for fuel, insurance premium and traffic challan, as the govt has enforced the 'one vehicle, one tag' rule. On the prospect of allowing insurance companies to issue FASTag to increase coverage of insured vehicles from 50% to 75%-90% in three years, the secretary said this is possible but there is a need to cleaning the 'Vahan' database, which has around 7.5 crore inactive vehicles.

No plans to collect tolls from two-wheelers, Nitin Gadkari junks reports

New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari junked on Thursday the speculative reports that asserted the government was going to impose toll tax on two-wheelers. 'Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed,' the minister wrote on X, in Hindi. The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue fully, he reassured. 'Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this,' he added. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) also separately clarified that that no such proposal is under consideration. 'There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers,' NHAI wrote on X. In a separate news, the government is set to introduce a FASTag-based Annual Pass, that will provide a 'big relief' to commuters as it will reduce the financial burden and ease travel with no need to stop at toll plazas. The annual pass scheme that will allow commuters to cross 200 toll plazas on National Highways for just Rs 3,000 annually--down from the earlier average of Rs 10,000. The scheme will come into effect from August 15. Minister Gadkari had said the new system translates to an average toll cost of Rs 15 per crossing--substantially lower than the current average--and is expected to save regular highway users up to Rs 7,000 a year. In April this year, in view of the multiple reports claiming that FASTags will be replaced by a satellite-based tolling system from May 1, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had issued a clarification, refuting these claims. The ministry had confirmed that no such decision was made. The Ministry in a release, then announced that in order to enable seamless, barrier-free movement of vehicles through toll plazas and reduce travel time, an 'ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System' will be implemented at selected toll plazas. The advanced tolling system will combine 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition' (ANPR) technology, which will identify vehicles by reading their number plates, and the existing 'FASTag system' that uses Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) for toll deduction. Under this, vehicles will be charged based on their identification through high-performance ANPR cameras and FASTag Readers, without needing to stop at the toll plazas. In case of non-compliance, E-Notices will be served to the violators, non-payment of which may result in suspension of FASTag and other VAHAN-related penalties. NHAI has invited bids for the implementation of the 'ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System' that will be installed at selected toll plazas. Based on the performance, efficiency, and user response to this system, a decision will be made regarding its implementation across the country, subsequently. (ANI)
