CBS Reiterates Claim That Trump's ‘60 Minutes' Lawsuit Is ‘Meritless,' Refutes President's Assertion Edited Interview Was ‘Commercial Speech'

Even as lawyers for Paramount Global and President Trump are in discussions about a potential settlement in his lawsuit over the editing of a '60 Minutes' interview with Kamala Harris, Paramount and CBS filed a response reaffirming their position that the interview is protected by the First Amendment — and that Trump's legal team has failed to provide any evidence to the contrary. 'This is a meritless lawsuit that, as Plaintiffs' opposition admits, takes 'aim[] at a news organization' … for editorial decisions Plaintiffs dislike,' Paramount and CBS said in a filing Monday in reply to Trump's move to deny CBS's motion to dismiss the lawsuit. More from Variety Co-Creator Derek Haas Says He Has 'No Insight' Into Why 'FBI: International' Was Canceled at CBS : It Had 'Nothing to Do With the Quality of the Show' President Trump Declares Iran's Nuclear Facilities Are 'Completely and Totally Obliterated' in Live Address to Nation Following Airstrikes Mark Cuban Turned Down the Offer When Asked to Submit to be Kamala Harris' Vice President in 2024 Presidential Election: 'I'm Not Very Good as the Number Two Person' Trump filed the lawsuit against CBS just days before the 2024 presidential election, alleging the '60 Minutes' interview with Harris violated a Texas consumer protection law by misleading voters and caused Trump personal financial harm. In an amended complaint, Trump added Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) as a co-plaintiff and doubled his claims to demand $20 billion in damages. 'President Trump and Representative Jackson attempt to evade bedrock First Amendment principles establishing that public officials like themselves cannot hold news organizations like CBS liable for the exercise of editorial judgment,' CBS said in its reply. A key point of Trump's legal argument is that the edited versions of the '60 Minutes' Harris interview represent commercial speech, and that — as alleged in the president's lawsuit — CBS competes for advertising with Trump's media businesses, including Truth Social's parent company Trump Media & Technology Group (which is majority-owned by the president). But CBS said Trump has not provided any evidence that the '60 Minutes' interview represents commercial speech. 'Effectively conceding that their claims cannot survive if the Broadcasts are editorial speech subject to full First Amendment protections, Plaintiffs argue that the Broadcasts somehow became 'commercial speech' via a simple promotion for the Interview,' CBS said. 'But they provide this Court with nothing that would support the conclusion that the Face the Nation and 60 Minutes Broadcasts — involving an interview of a presidential candidate about issues of utmost public concern — are anything but fully protected editorial speech, and they cite not a single case holding that news broadcasts (or promotions for such broadcasts) are commercial speech. Indeed, the Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected that argument. The First Amendment applies fully to the news reporting at issue and bars Plaintiffs' claims.' CBS continued in the filing, 'Accepting Plaintiffs' standing arguments would amount to greenlighting thousands of consumer claims brought by individuals who merely disagree with a news organizations' editorial choices. And President Trump does not even attempt to fill the pleading gaps on his Lanham Act claim by identifying any actionable misrepresentation or how he or any other alleged purchaser materially relied on any purported misrepresentation.' In a separate filing Monday, CBS reiterated its position that the lawsuit — about an interview filmed in Washington, D.C., and broadcast from New York City — 'does not belong in federal court in Texas.' 'Plaintiffs do not dispute that the filming, editing and production work for the challenged Interview took place nearly two thousand miles from this courthouse,' CBS said in the reply. 'They do not dispute that the Interview never referenced this state. And they do not dispute that the people most knowledgeable about the Interview all worked in New York or Washington D.C. President Trump and Representative Jackson do not even allege that they watched the FTN or 60 Minutes Broadcasts from Texas when they aired. In short, there is no basis for jurisdiction or venue in this Court.' In March, Paramount filed a motion to dismiss Trump's suit, which the company called 'an affront to the First Amendment' that is 'without basis in law or fact.' In a filing last Friday, attorneys for both parties said the two sides are 'engaged in active settlement discussions, including continued mediation.' Paramount offered $15 million to settle the lawsuit but that was rejected by Trump's team, which wants at least $25 million as well as an apology from CBS, the Wall Street Journal reported. Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, is said to support the company's attempts to resolve the '60 Minutes' suit through mediation. Trump lawsuit's centers on an exchange in which '60 Minutes' correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Harris about the Biden administration's relations with Netanyahu, whom Whitaker said 'is not listening' to the White House. CBS News broadcast a longer portion of Harris's response on Oct. 6 on 'Face the Nation,' whereas the edited '60 Minutes' segment broadcast the next day included a shorter excerpt from the same answer. 'Each excerpt reflects the substance of the vice president's answer,' CBS News said in a statement. In response to an FCC request related to its investigation of a 'new distortion' complaint about the Harris interview, CBS News released an unedited transcript of the '60 Minutes' interview with Harris that aired Oct. 6, 2024 (available at this link) and said the materials show that 'consistent with 60 Minutes' repeated assurances to the public,' the broadcast 'was not doctored or deceitful.' Amazon Prime adds 'wildly entertaining' and action-packed crime thriller

There's something inherently satisfying when a team of ragtag individuals are put together for a high-stakes mission. Whether it's Brad Pitt and George Clooney assembling a new group in Ocean's Eleven, or Tom Cruise setting up his next daring stunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise, teamwork does indeed make the dream work. And when it comes to Amazon Prime Video's latest series, Countdown, it is certainly no exception to that rule. Created by Derek Haas, who is known for shows such as One Chicago and FBI: International, viewers are hailing it as a 'wildly entertaining' ride. Following the murder of a Department of Homeland Security agent, Nathan Blythe (Euphoria star Eric Dane) puts together a task force of agents from various agencies who are each known for their unconventional methods. The team includes Mark Meachum (The Boys star Jensen Ackles), Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho), Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane), and Lucas Finau (Uli Latukefu). Each of them works to track down the murderer; however, the search starts to reveal a much darker conspiracy that could endanger the lives of Americans. Described by Collider as 'wildly entertaining', the 13-part series has received some mixed reviews after the opening three episodes dropped on the streaming service. Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, viewer Natalia G said: 'Really enjoyed the first three episodes. Full of action and thrill. All of the actors are doing an amazing job. The Wheel of Time The Boys The Bondsman Invincible Fallout Condor 'The characters already seem to be well flashed out and I quickly became invested in their stories and what they are going through. Jensen Ackles as a lead is doing an amazing job. 'Mark Meachum is a complex character that really is going through some dark stuff in his personal life. And Ackles portrayed that struggle beautifully. Can't wait to see what's next!' Jade M added: 'Loved it. Kept me on the edge of my seat! Am invested in the team, I need to know about them and I already care. Jensen Ackles was so very good but I was expecting him to be. The others were also very good.' However, TV criticNick Schager from The Daily Beast wrote: 'Clunky, simplistic, unbelievable, and inert, it's a show that manages the impressive feat of being generic in absolutely every respect.' Ross McIndoe from Slant Magazine also argued: 'The series feels like a cop show from an older, more conservative era of television.' This comes as viewers are also rushing to binge an 'excellent' crime drama on Amazon Prime Video that offers a new perspective on a comic book classic. Created by Bruno Heller, Gotham follows James 'Jim' Gordon's early days at the Gotham City Police Department. Based during the period after the death of Bruce Wayne's parents, the series has received high praise from fans. Writing on IMDb, where it currently has a 7.8 rating, hgdybecker described it as a 'different take on the Batman universe – but a very good one'. Earlier this month, Countdown star Dane broke his silence after receiving a heartbreaking ALS diagnosis in April. More Trending Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is often referred to as one of the most cruel diseases a human can face, and is a progressive neurological disease that is almost always fatal. Speaking with Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer, the former Grey's Anatomy star defiantly vowed 'I don't feel like this is the end of me'. 'I wake up every day and I'm immediately reminded that this is happening,' he said. View More » 'I don't think this is the end of my story. I don't feel like this is the end of me.' Got a story? CBS' FBI Stars Didn't Spoil Isobel's Fate After Life-Or-Death Finale Cliffhanger, But I Love Their Pitches For 'Jumping The Shark' Spinoffs

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Fans of CBS' Dick Wolf TV shows knew going into the finales that they would be the last-ever episodes of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, but who would have guessed that FBI would end on a life-or-death cliffhanger for one of the main characters? Not exactly a show known for serialized storylines or season-ending cliffhangers before the 2025 TV schedule, the Season 7 finale seemed like it was about to end with the good guys winning, the bad guys losing, and fans feeling pretty okay heading into hiatus. Instead, Isobel's life is on the line! Alana De La Garza and Jeremy Sisto didn't spoil to CinemaBlend what happens next, but they proved to be a very fun duo when paired up for interviews even after previewing a "frightening" finale. While dodging any spoilers, the two FBI stars came up with some wild spinoff pitches and fun alternate explanations for why Isobel collapsed with no pulse at the end of the Season 7 finale. When I spoke with the actors, I had to ask the obvious question: will De La Garza appear in Season 8? The Law & Order alum teased: Look, you never know. You have to watch! You have to watch Season 8 to see if I'm alive. Does she make it? How does she make it? Is there actually a call? Is she a zombie?... Zombie Apocalypse: FBI. She just comes back [like that]. Hey, if any TV universe could pull off a procedural about zombies, I'd wager that one in the FBI/One Chicago/Law & Order Dick Wolf world would have a fighting chance. Jeremy Sisto wasn't sold on the idea of Zombie Apocalypse: FBI, though, and the actors went back and forth on a potential supernatural spinoff: Jeremy Sisto: "I don't think that's a good idea. That would be jumping the shark for sure." Alana De La Garza: "We'll ask Dick [Wolf]." Jeremy Sisto: "Has Dick ever done a vampire [show]? I don't think he has. A zombie thing?" Alana De La Garza: "I don't think so. Blood and gore, but not that kind." Dick Wolf's current slate of shared universe TV shows via the Wolf Entertainment production company includes Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, and of course FBI. (CIA will join on CBS in the fall to a certain extent.) They're all different enough shows, but one thing they all have in common? No zombies or vampires. Jeremy Sisto went on to address what it would mean to lose Isobel, so soon after she made a decision with no regrets. With the Season 7 finale currently available streaming with a Paramount+ subscription, the former Clueless star said: I mean, it's huge. Obviously, just the idea of losing Isobel... All of us were like, 'What's going on?' So whatever the fans are feeling, we have also felt, although perhaps we know the results, but we don't know. We cannot say. Despite the laughs between the stars, nobody was smiling when the final credits rolled on the finale. After Maggie and Jubal noticed Isobel stumbling over her words, the ASAC suddenly collapsed to the floor without a pulse. It seems that head wound that had me worried in the promo was more serious than it seemed! In a touch that I particularly loved, Jubal kept calling her "ma'am" when something just seemed a bit off, but switched over to "Isobel!" once she collapsed. Having seen that tragic ending, I got a kick out of De La Garza and Sisto continuing to spin sillier options for what the future holds. They told me: Alana De La Garza: "We cannot divulge." Jeremy Sisto: "That's the idea of it. Either I'm extremely saddened right now because she's not coming back, and I'm hiding that from you." Alana De La Garza: "He is a good actor!" Jeremy Sisto: "Or she is coming back and you'll just have to wait and see. I'm hiding that too. That's what we're supposed to be doing here. I'm playing the middle." But what about Maggie announcing to the assembled agents that Isobel didn't have a pulse, just after they scored such a huge victory against the villains who had infiltrated the Bureau? That's the biggest cliffhanger left after the credits rolled on Season 7, and that left me very happy that FBI scored an early renewal for Season 8. Well, the stars pitched an explanation for the absent pulse: Jeremy Sisto: "She doesn't have a pulse. I checked again, still no pulse. Maybe she just doesn't have a pulse. That's the other thing. They cut out the part where I was like, 'Maggie, it's fine. She just doesn't have a pulse.'" Alana De La Garza: "'Just leave her there. It's fine.'" Will FBI pick up in the immediate aftermath of the cliffhanger in the fall, to show exactly what happened to Isobel after her collapse? Or will Season 8 pick up in real time, with months passed in-universe since Isobel ended the spring without a pulse? Season 7 started last year with the exit of a series regular following a time jump, although Katherine Renee Kane's Tiff Wallace got to walk out alive and well. What about Isobel? We can only speculate for now, but at least Paramount+ has the entire run of the series so far to offer for summer hiatus rewatching.

FBI: Most Wanted – Canceled or renewed for season 7? What we know

To fans' joy, FBI was renewed for as many as three seasons at once back in 2024. Later, spin-off series FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International were renewed for one season each. However, to fans' disappointment, both series have been canceled, ending with their current sixth and fourth seasons respectively. The beloved show, which stars Dylan McDermott, Roxy Sternberg and Keisha Castle-Hughes, is coming to an end. There will be no FBI: Most Wanted season 7. FBI: Most Wanted was canceled alongside FBI: International after both the shows scored lower ratings than various other shows on CBS. According to RadioTimes, it seems as though the shows were canceled in part to introduce a new show in the franchise called CIA, which will star Tom Ellis. The cast and crew members of the show have shared their tributes after the filming was wrapped. Earlier in May, showrunner David Hudgins posting a photo of the whole team behind the scenes, captioning it, 'That's a wrap on #fbimostwantedcbs. Thank you amazing cast & crew'. Meanwhile, Edwin Hodge also shared behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, captioning the post, 'All good things must come to an end. I'm filled with so much abundance and appreciation for this prodigious cast and crew. Thanks to the cast for simply being their authentic selves. My days were filled with laughter every time I went to work. The crew showed up everyday to add their magic to make the show a hit as well. All teams stayed on deck and I couldn't be happier with the work environment and ultimately my experience on the show! I'll hit you with some new gigs this year.' Nina Chase star Shantel VanSanten shared a post saying she was "gonna miss these cherry blossoms, referring to the cast, adding that 'they made my days better and brighter'.

‘What In The World Are They Doing?' CBS' FBI Stars Hype The ‘Frightening' Season 7 Finale, And It's Been A Long Time Coming

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Season 7 of FBI is coming to an end in the 2025 TV schedule, and the season that started with one agent departing 26 Fed will end with 26 Fed possibly infiltrated by double agents. Called "A New Day," the finale's first preview had me concerned for Jubal and Isobel in particular, and comments from Jeremy Sisto and Alana De La Garza haven't allayed those concerns in the least! When I spoke with the FBI stars, they previewed what to expect from the last episode of the spring and why it's been a long time coming. According to CBS, the finale that airs on May 20 (and streams next day with a Paramount+ subscription) will kick off with Jubal narrowly escaping an attack on an FBI office that's supposed to be secret, leading to the discovery of the infiltration of the Bureau by a rogue terrorist group. Our heroes won't know who to trust within the NYC field office, and the promo even suggests that Jubal will be accused of betraying the FBI, while Isobel has strong words for... somebody, who hopefully isn't Jubal! So, how high are the stakes truly for "A New Day" as the final episode of FBI this spring? Well, I asked the stars that very question, and Jeremy Sisto shared: I feel like it's an idea we've been talking about since the beginning of the show. Because of the JOC being a sort of a character in the story, it's been an element of a lot of writers [who] have been like, 'We should do an episode where there's some bad guys inside the agency, and we don't know who they are.' And so I think there's probably been a lot of pitch meetings about ways to do that, and a lot of them were just too far this way or that way. They really pulled it off in a very believable way. While the idea for an episode with the bad guys coming onto the good guys' turf has apparently been circulating for some time, the Season 7 finale will finally deliver the storyline. It should be interesting to see if the core group of agents who usually trust each other without hesitation question the loyalties of any of the others. I can't see Maggie or OA having any doubts about the other, but the promo already suggests that Jubal could be in hot water. Sisto continued: It's obviously frightening that people within the agency could be swayed, but it also comes at a point where our fan base, they feel really connected to us. So the idea of realistically showing how this kind of organization could be brought down through nefarious means, I think, is something that's going to get people glued to their couches. "Glued to the couches" might be just what fans of the franchise need, in light of FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted's series finales airing right after FBI on Tuesday night. While we can't say just yet if a happy ending is on the way for the agents of the two cancelled shows, it certainly sounds like we're in for some excitement on the original series. (FBI is already renewed through Season 9.) Paramount Plus: from $7.99 a month/$79.99 a yearSubscribe to Paramount Plus to watch every episode of FBI so far. Opt for its Essential plan or go ad-free and get double the catalog with Showtime through the Premium plan from $12.99 a month. Alternatively, get 12 months for the price of 10 with its annual Deal As for Isobel, she looks somewhat worse for the wear in the earliest preview footage for the Season 7 finale. Alana De La Garza of course didn't spoil everything fans should expect from the big episode, but she did share a prediction for the kinds of questions viewers will be asking throughout the "journey." The former Law & Order actress previewed: They're going to be on the edge of their seat. This is unlike anything we have shot or I have read for the whole team... It's so exciting and there's so many twists and turns... I haven't even seen it. I know that we performed it and we read it, and it was like, 'What?! Have you guys read this?!' That was us coming to set every day, going, 'Oh my gosh, this is incredible.' So it's really, really fun. It was fun to be a part of, and I think it's going to be fun for the fans to go on that journey with us, and figure out: 'What in the world are they doing? Are they going to be okay?' Which is great. The wait is nearly over to check out the Season 7 finale of FBI, whether you watch live on CBS or stream via Paramount+. "A New Day" airs on May 20 in the hit drama's usual 8 p.m. ET CBS time slot, opening the very last FBI Tuesday with three full hours of the franchise. Check out the promo below: FBI returns in the fall for Season 8 with a new spot in CBS' TV lineup. Instead of its longtime 8 p.m. ET slot on Tuesdays, new episodes will air on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET ahead of CIA, the new spinoff starring Lucifer vet Tom Ellis. It remains to be seen if any FBI: International or FBI: Most Wanted characters will migrate over to the original series following their finales, but at least fans can count on FBI coming back.
