Nets sign No. 8 overall pick Egor Demin to rookie scale contract

Former BYU guard Egor Demin, the No. 8 overall pick in the NBA draft, signed his rookie-scale contract with the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, the team announced. Demin was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, averaging 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals on 41.2% shooting from the field in 33 games. He finished in double figures 19 times, including a season-high 20 points, seven assists and rebounds on Nov. 8. He will make $6,889,200 next season, according to Spotrac. The 6-foot-9 standout has also represented Russia at the junior level at the 2021 FIBA U16 European Challengers. He averaged 12.2 points, four rebounds, 2.2 steals and two assists on 37.9% shooting from the field in four appearances. Demin became the first five-star recruit to commit to BYU after playing for the Real Madrid youth team over the previous two seasons. He dazzled as a playmaker, ranking third in the conference in assists after setting the freshman program record (180). The 19-year-old was heavily linked to the Nets throughout the predraft process before the organization ultimately selected him in the lottery. He was highly touted because of his size, ballhandling and scoring ability, traits the team focused on this year in the draft. Demin is expected to suit up with the Nets for at least five games in the NBA Summer League, beginning on July 10 against the Oklahoma City Thunder (5:30 p.m. EDT, ESPN2).
