Trump Hosted Murdoch At Weekend Game Before Explosive WSJ Epstein Story
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump hosted NewsCorp CEO Rupert Murdoch at the FIFA Club World Cup Final just days before the Wall Street Journal printed a report that Trump had written a "bawdy" birthday letter to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Trump attended the Club World Cup final on July 13 and stuffed his VIP box with the likes of Tom Brady, Murdoch, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, according to CBS News. Trump has recently labeled the Epstein files a "hoax" pushed by his enemies, and he has promised to sue Murdoch, NewsCorp, and The Wall Street Journal over the "defamatory story." Trump said he had "personally" warned the outlet and Murdoch before they printed the report that he would sue them if they pressed ahead with publication, and said that Murdoch had assured him that he would "take care of it but, obviously, did not have the power to do so." Newsweek reached out to NewsCorp by email outside of normal business hours for comment. This is a breaking news story. Updates will follow.

Chelsea's left-back dilemma could be solved by Ajax's special 19-year-old sensation
It has been a sensational start to the summer window for Chelsea Football Club. The Blues returned to the UEFA Champions League after a two-year drought after finishing fourth in the Premier League table, whilst they also ended a four-year trophy drought after beating Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League Final. And what's more, they have confirmed their status as the champions of the world after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup Final. Whilst they had previously found themselves under tight financial scrutiny, they look set to extricate themselves from this predicament due to the forthcoming sale of Noni Madueke to Arsenal. This, as well as other imminent departures, will give them the leeway to pursue new signings before being forced into any sales. Moreover, after earning £84.5 million in prize money from the tournament, Chelsea have even more firepower to splurge big and acquire their top targets. Chelsea must thin out the squad while also locating areas to improve All things considered, it looks set to be a case of thinning out the squad and prioritizing quality over quantity for Enzo Maresca as he approaches his second season at the helm. That means finding new homes for returning loanees like Joao Felix, Armando Broja, Axel Disasi and Raheem Sterling, as well as engineering loan moves for many of their young talents. In terms of incomings, there aren't quite as many pressing needs for the Blues, who have added center forwards Joao Pedro and Liam Delap as well as winger Jamie Gittens to their attack this summer. One area that will certainly need to be improved, however, is the left-back position. Chelsea entered the 2024/25 season with three left-sided fullbacks, only to end up loaning Ben Chilwell and Renato Veiga out midway through the campaign to Crystal Palace and Juventus, respectively. With no real backup at the left-back position, Marc Cucurella has been forced to deliver week in and week out, tallying up 5,000 minutes between club and international duty. The Spaniard has thrived on both sides of the ball and emerged as one of the finest left-backs in world football, but at nearly 27 years of age, he's clearly going to be unable to bear the physical strain that was wielded upon him in 2024/25. It is of the utmost importance that Chelsea sign another left-sided defender this summer and be willing to spend top dollar to get their man. They should look no further than Jorrel Hato. Since making his debut in February 2023, Hato has emerged as a vital cog for Ajax as well as an increasingly important member of the Netherlands, and he looks set to become the latest Ajax player to make the move to the Premier League. After becoming the third-youngest player to debut for Ajax in the Eredivisie, Hato was awarded the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy as the most talented player from Ajax's youth academy and quickly became one of the first names on the team sheet thanks to his elegance in possession as well as his confidence and fearlessness off the ball. At just 17 years of age, Hato played nearly every single minute of the 2023/24 season and even wore the captain's armband for Ajax and became one of their vice-captains. He continued his development in the 2024/25 season under Francesco Farioli, excelling in central defense whilst also providing cover at left back, and whilst he was unable to prevent Ajax from improbably bottling a chance to win the league title, he did enough to be named the Eredivisie Talent of the Year. Capable of breaking the lines with well-weighted passes and exploiting high presses with his elegant dribbling in tight spaces, Hato is a ball-playing defender in every sense of the word, and he's more than capable of adjusting to Maresca's style of play. It's these stellar abilities which have seen him draw interest from various Premier League sides like Liverpool and Arsenal, and it's why Chelsea must act quickly in order to secure his signing. Hato wouldn't just be a backup option at left back, but a player who could provide some much-needed depth at the centre back position. With French defenders Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Disasi struggling to convince, Chelsea need more guarantees to compete with their English core of Tosin Adarabioyo, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah, and despite his tender age, Hato is just that: someone who can offer reliably impressive performances. Chelsea should spare no expense in getting this move over the line. They need to quickly advance on Hato in order to avoid missing out on his signing. GBeNeFN | Zach Lowy

Trump Wants Gaza Deal 'Straightened Out' Within The Next Week
President Trump on Sunday said he hopes a ceasefire deal in Gaza can be finalized within this week, in comments made to reporters before boarding a flight to attend yesterday's FIFA Club World Cup Final. When asked about the ongoing crisis in Gaza, he responded, 'We're talking, and hopefully we'll get that straightened out over the next week. Let's see what happens.' While there had been anticipation in Israel for a deal announcement during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington DC last week, recent days have seen the typical non-committal, ambiguous statements out of both Washington and Tel Aviv. The war looks to have no solutions, given the stated goals of Israel and the United States. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism Sunday, saying he was 'hopeful' an agreement could be reached. But as it stands the Netanyahu government is still insisting on the full disarming of Hamas, while Hamas for its part wants full withdrawal of the Israeli military. Neither is expected to happen, and at this point it looks to be a fight to the death – with Israeli hostages still in limbo (and many feared dead) – and thousands of Palestinian civilians getting slaughtered each week. Currently, a plan floated by some Israeli officials for a designated 'humanitarian city' inside a sector of Gaza has continued to be met with immense pushback. Critics call it in effect a 'concentration camp' – while many within Israel say it is logistically impossible. The plan was announced by Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz last week: Israeli affairs analyst, Dan Perry, says the plan to build a 'humanitarian city' would involve 'by all indications a very long process' to build and maintain, while the country does not have the 'funds or the energy or the desire' to do so. 'I think this has to be viewed in the context of the current negotiations where the very reporting of such a plan might be an effort to put pressure on Hamas to show more flexibility,' Perry told Al Jazeera. 'I agree with [opposition leader Yair] Lapid that it is a security, political and logistical nightmare. I would add that it's ethically inadmissible,' he added. And so it is unlikely to get off the ground. In the meantime aid delivery continues to also be mired in controversy and scandal, as American military contractors have reportedly fired on hungry Palestinians. Reports say the IDF troops have shot dead scores of Palestinians seeking the aid, and UN and international rights groups have slammed the unsafe aid station set-ups. Donald Trump's Approval Rating Plummets to New Low
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump's approval rating has declined, according to YouGov polling. According to a survey by the pollsters, Trump's net approval rating is -17, a decline from the last time YouGov polled voters, when it was -11. Why It Matters The decline comes amid backlash to the Trump administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. The White House had initially ordered a review of the case and said it would publish names and evidence about associates of Epstein, a wealthy financier who died by suicide in jail in August 2019, weeks after his arrest on sex trafficking charges. However, a recent memo from the Department of Justice and the FBI stated that there is no "client list," and no further charges will be brought. A sustained polling backlash could affect Trump's reputation and the Republican Party more generally in the November 2026 midterms. Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire) (Icon Sportswire via AP Images What To Know The YouGov survey of 2,104 adults was conducted between July 9 and July 13. It found that 39 percent approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president and 56 percent disapprove. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent. Other polls have painted a similarly bleak picture of Trump. A Tyson Group poll, conducted between June 25 and 26 among 1,027 U.S. adults, showed Trump's net approval rating 6 points underwater, with 45 percent approving and 51 percent disapproving. However, other recent polls have shown Trump has had an uptick in support from conservatives. According to polling by YouGov/The Economist, the president has a net approval rating of +80 from this demographic. This is similar to the levels it was at during the start of his second term. What People Are Saying Mark Shanahan, who teaches American politics at the University of Surrey, told Newsweek: "The Epstein backlash has the power to hurt Trump badly and will be far and away the largest factor in his latest polling slip. Releasing the Epstein Files is the Holy Grail for the MAGA base. Trump told them he was going to do so in the run-up to the presidential election, and they believed him. "They took it on faith that he was not involved in Epstein's underage sex activities and that there were dark forces at play in Epstein's death. The release of the files was going to expose the actions of their political opponents and place the president atop a moral high horse. But that hasn't happened, and some within MAGA are definitely questioning Trump's role and wondering what he has to hide. He added, "In terms of other factors affecting his approval, his continual flip-flopping over tariffs is not playing well. More and more voters are realizing that tariffs on import affect them with rising prices and falling consumer choice for goods made outside the US. Many of these goods can't be replaced by home-produced products in the short term or, quite often, at all. So the realization for many is that America First comes with consequences to their wallets. That does not play well when a pollster gets in touch." What Happens Next Trump's popularity will likely fluctuate in the next few weeks and months. Meanwhile, the backlash to the Epstein debacle is likely to persist.
