Gilas Women lose steam vs. young Chinese Taipei team to end Jones Cup run
Gilas Pilipinas Women ended their run at the 2025 William Jones Cup with another stinging loss, absorbing a lopsided 76-57 loss against Chinese Taipei (collegiate) on Sunday in Taiwan.
The Filipinas wasted an early lead before ultimately bowing to the Chinese Taipei squad that's part of the FISU World university Games alongside the still undefeated Japan Universiade.
The world no. 44 Gilas Pilipinas Women will end their stint with a 1-4 win-loss card while Chinese Taipei's collegiate representative capped off its run at 3-2.
Vanessa de Jesus led the charge with a near double-double outing of 15 points and eight rebounds to go with two assists and two steals while Naomi Panganiban starred with 10 markers, six boards, three dimes, and two steals to step up for Jack Animam, who was heavily guarded the entire game.
The veteran center was held to just seven points but grabbed 11 rebounds and two assists.
Gilas will now shift its focus to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup next month as they look to qualify to the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
