Football set to copy completely different sport's approach to VAR with managers to be given massive new responsibility
FOOTBALL looks set to introduce a cricket and tennis-style challenge system that will completely transform VAR. This new version of VAR allows managers to request reviews on key decisions such as goals, penalties, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity. 3 The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is reportedly introducing an exciting new 'low cost' review system called Football Video Support (FVS) to Spain's third tier this season. Under FVS each team gets two reviews per game, and if a challenge is successful, they keep it for later use — if not, they lose that chance. Managers could order a review by twirling their finger in the air and giving the fourth official a review card showing the type of decision being challenged. The referee then consults a pitch-side monitor to reassess the incident, speeding up the process and reducing the costs and chaos associated with traditional VAR. Meanwhile, Spain's top women's league, Liga F, could approve the FVS system as soon as this week, potentially becoming the first major league to fully adopt it. This would mark a significant step toward modernising officiating in women's football, with the Women's Super League currently operating without VAR. If FVS proves effective, LaLiga might consider implementing it too, which could see calls for it to be brought to the Prem. 3 Fifa referees chief Pierluigi Collina revealed that the system had already made its debut during last year's Blue Stars/Fifa Youth Cup in Zurich. He told national associations during Fifa's annual congress in Bangkok that the outcome had been 'very, very positive'. Arsenal CONFIRM £63.5million Viktor Gyokeres transfer as striker takes iconic No14 made famous by Thierry Henry There have already been calls for a challenge system in the Premier League, amid the opposition to the VAR system that currently reviews every match-changing incident. One of the biggest fans of an 'appeal system' has been Gary Lineker. Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast last year, Lineker explained: "The only way out of this mess, and I think they should keep offside and goal-line technology. "But I think you either scrap the rest of it or, more realistically, you take it to an appeal system. 3 "You limit the amount of times that VAR can interfere. It can not intervene unless someone appeals. "Maybe one appeal a half, but it stops VAR coming into every possible corner that comes in." Prem chiefs tried to sort some of the problems out last season, when they rolled out semi-automated offside technology for the final seven rounds of top flight games.

Footballer given straight red card for throwing ball at FAN before ‘sticking finger up at referee'
A FOOTBALLER was sent off for throwing a ball at a fan before appearing to stick up his middle finger at the referee. Seattle Sounders star Nouhou Tolo received a straight red card in an MLS match against Sporting Kansas City. 3 3 The defender was sent off in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the match with his side leading 3-1. Nouhou, 28, picked up the ball and threw it at a Sporting fan standing behind the goal. The linesman immediately rushed over to calm the situation and informed the referee of the incident. Ref Elijio Arreguin then brandished a red card as Nouhou protested his innocence. The 28-year-old raised his middle finger, appearing to explain that is what the fan had done to provoke him. Sounders boss Brian Schmetzer explained post-match that the fan did give Nouhou the middle finger. He said: "A fan flipped him off and then he threw a ball into the stands. "I will deal with Nouhou internally." The incident occurred as officials reviewed the decision to award Sporting a penalty. The call was upheld and the spot-kick was converted, but there was not enough time for the hosts to grab an equaliser as Sounders won 3-2.

‘We need to take care of him' – Fears at Newmarket as £2million horse suffers ‘freak accident' and is pulled from race
FOOTBALL superagent Kia Joorabchian will be praying for good news on his new £2million horse - after he suffered a 'freak accident' just minutes before the big race. Joorabchian, who looked after players such as ex-Manchester United and Man City star Carlos Tevez and Arsenal hero Willian, splashed the huge sum on Ghostwriter at last month's sales. He was even money favourite for the Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket until disaster struck. It meant Ghostwriter was dramatically pulled from the £125,000 Group 2 on the advice of the racecourse vets. The horse was seen limping back to his box after rearing in his box. Trainer Clive Cox said: "It was a freak accident. We were just putting the saddle on and he reared up. "He is clearly very lame and we won't take part on the back of that. "We're very sorry for everyone and the owners - but his health is the priority. "He was limping and we need to take care of him." Joorabchian signed a cheque for £2m for Group 2 winner Ghostwriter less than a month ago at the ultra-exclusive Goffs London Sale. Explaining how he came to land the horse, he said at the time: "To be honest, my son picked this horse out a little while ago and he said, 'We've got to buy this!'" Joorabchian has made waves in the sport with some huge spending under the banner of his Amo Racing operation. And he has had plenty of success too, most notably with Champion Stakes winner and Derby runner-up King Of Steel. But he will be desperate to know all is OK with his newest recruit after he was shown walking gingerly away from the racecourse. More to follow. .
