Baltimore weather: Heat index expected to reach 110 this week; advisories take effect
Weather advisories take effect this week as the heat index for most of the state is expected to reach up to 110 in the coming days. The National Weather Service issued a warning for Monday at 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. before shifting to an extreme heat watch from Tuesday morning to evening. The majority of eastern and all of central Maryland are covered in the advisory. The NWS advises Marylanders to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun. Amtrak said on social media Sunday that due to temperature-related speed restrictions, trains between Washington and New York, which includes Baltimore, might experience delays of up to 20 mins until 7:30pm. Sunday is predicted to be partly sunny with a high near 100, according to the weather service. However, the heat index — the temperature bodies feel based on humidity and other factors — is expected to be around 104. There's a chance of a thunderstorm into the evening as conditions shift to partly cloudy. The temperature low is projected to be 81. Moving into Monday, the high is expected to be around 101 with a heat index of 109. Conditions are forecast to be sunny with a slight breeze between 3 and 8 mph. Conditions are likely to remain clear headed into Monday night. The low is predicted to be around 79. Tuesday is expected to be similar to Monday, but the predicted heat index is lower at 101. Tuesday evening is forecast to be mostly clear with a temperature low of 79. Wednesday is the first day of the week when the temperature high is expected to be below 100. Conditions are predicted to be sunny with high around 99. Partly cloudy conditions should set in Wednesday evening. The low is forecast to be near 76. A chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected before 2 p.m. Thursday. The day is expected to be mostly sunny with a high around 95. In the evening, conditions are anticipated to shift to mostly cloudy with a low of 74. Canadian wildfire smoke may bring ‘red haze' to Baltimore on Tuesday
If Tuesday's sunrise looks a little strange or even prettier than usual, it's not your eyes deceiving you, but rather smoke in the upper levels of the atmosphere over Maryland. Dozens of wildfires are burning in Canada, leading to the evacuation of thousands of Canadians in three provinces and spreading masses of thick smoke to places in the U.S., from the Midwest to the Carolinas. Baltimore will see some hazy skies related to the smoke on Tuesday, said Gerard Jebaily, the chief meteorologist for FOX45 News. 'We're expected to see some fairly dense smoke move overhead throughout tomorrow through most of the day, if not the entire day,' Jebaily said on Monday. While the smoke will be visible, particularly at sunrise and sunset, residents probably will not be able to smell it, nor will it impact the region's air quality, he said. 'The majority of [the smoke] is going to be in the upper levels, so it won't make it to the ground, so we may not have any visibility problems,' Jebaily said. Maryland saw the influx of wildfire smoke from Canada in the summers of 2023 and 2024, to a lesser extent. In June 2023, air quality was 'very unhealthy' at times, but Tuesday is unlikely to be a repeat. Jebaily noted that temperatures could be affected because the smoke may filter out some sunshine. 'It will look very hazy and the sun may have an eerie, red haze to it as it peeks through,' he said. Residents can expect the sun to look orange or reddish for most of Tuesday. A slight temperature increase is expected Wednesday, putting the middle of the week's predicted high to about 88. Wednesday is forecast to be sunny, with conditions likely to remain mostly clear and a low of 68 at night. Temperatures are expected to peak Thursday with an anticipated high of 90 and mostly sunny conditions. Cloud coverage is predicted to set in Thursday evening. The projected low is around 71. A chance of showers ends the workweek Friday. The day will likely be partly sunny with a high of 88. The chance for showers lasts throughout Friday evening and into Saturday.
