Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli's ODI Return Uncertain As India vs Bangladesh Series 2025 Hangs In The Balance

The much-awaited India vs Bangladesh 2025 white-ball series, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is, has hit a roadblock with the BCCI yet to receive clearance from the Indian government. Scheduled to begin on August 17 in Dhaka, the tour now hangs in the balance due to escalating Indo-Pak tensions and the political unrest following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh last year. According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), while formal communication of postponement has not been made, India's participation is currently 'under discussion,' hinging entirely on government approval. With the series being a part of the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), its cancellation or postponement could disrupt international calendars. Also Read: Jasprit Bumrah To Play IND vs ENG 2nd Test? Here's All You Need To Know After an extensive board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, BCB President Aminul Islam confirmed that dialogues with the BCCI remain 'positive.' He stated, 'We're in talks with BCCI on possible alternatives. If not in August or September, we'll look for another feasible window.' However, such optimism faces a harsh reality: India's cricket calendar is packed till January 2026, with the Champions Trophy, IPL 2026, and bilateral commitments lined up. If the August series is scrapped, the earliest available window for Bangladesh might not appear before mid-2026, potentially delaying this tour indefinitely. Historical Weight: Can India Break Their ODI Drought in Bangladesh? India's record in Bangladesh in recent years has been far from dominant. The Men in Blue have not won an ODI series on Bangladeshi soil since 2014, making this tour a chance for redemption. The return of senior pros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—both retired from Tests—was expected to bolster the ODI setup and possibly end the decade-long wait for a series win. The ODI leg was scheduled across Dhaka and Chattogram, with matches on August 17, 20, and 23, followed by the historic first-ever bilateral T20I series in Bangladesh, from August 26 to 31. Suryakumar Yadav's Fitness Clouds T20I Leadership Adding to India's selection conundrum, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav remains doubtful for the tour, recovering from sports hernia surgery in Germany. In his absence, Axar Patel is the frontrunner to lead a potentially youthful T20I squad. With India's Test regulars, including Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill, likely to be rested after the England tour, this series was expected to provide Gautam Gambhir an opportunity to experiment ahead of the 2027 World Cup. Jasprit Bumrah playing just three Tests in England decided during Champions Trophy: 'He will revisit plan if...'

The decision to have Jasprit Bumrah play just three Tests in the five-match series against England was taken during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, according to Team India's former strength and conditioning coach, Soham Desai. The ace speedster, 31, played all five Tests against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, he suffered a back spasm during the last Test in Sydney and as a result, he missed three months of competitive cricket, including the Champions Trophy, which India won. The decision to have Jasprit Bumrah play just three Tests against England was taken during the Champions Trophy. (AP) All signs are leading towards Bumrah missing the second Test against Edgbaston, even when India run the risk of going 0-2 down. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna disappointed in the first Test as they leaked runs consistently, easing the pressure on England. Bumrah bowled a total of 43.4 overs in Headingley. He returned with five wickets in the first innings. But he went wicketless in the second innings as England chased down 371 to gain a 1-0 lead. There was a seven-day gap between the first and second Tests. However, it seems like Bumrah would now be available for the third Test at Lord's Cricket Ground. Even when the hosts were 85 runs away from the target, India captain Shubman Gill refrained from bringing Bumrah into the attack, signalling that Bumrah's workload would be managed midway through the contest. Also Read: Gautam Gambhir takes Jasprit Bumrah aside; India pacer all but out of 2nd Test "When Bumrah couldn't make it to the Champions Trophy, India's Future Tours Programme (FTP) was studied, and it was decided that he would only play three Tests in England,' Soham Desai told the Times of India. Desai also revealed that management makes the initial plans regarding workload, but Jasprit Bumrah usually takes the final call. He also stated that the plan can always be revisited if the pacer feels there is a crucial juncture in the series. 'It then comes down to the team management and the bowler himself. It's their call. If Bumrah feels this is a crucial juncture in the series, he usually revisits the plan. But one must take into account the ordeal he faces mentally every time he breaks down,' Desai said. 'Set number of overs decided for Bumrah' The former India strength and conditioning coach also revealed that the management already decides the number of overs Bumrah should bowl in a Test even before the match begins. He revealed that Bumrah's back injury was triggered by him bowling a few extra overs without a breather during the Melbourne Test against Australia. 'I've known him since the ACL injury in 2014, during his days with the Gujarat domestic team. He is always trying to understand how his body responds to different circumstances,' Desai said. 'There is a set number of overs that is decided for Bumrah to bowl per Test. One can go five-seven overs beyond that limit, but what needs to be seen is how those extra overs are bowled. At the MCG in the previous Test series, he bowled those extra overs without much of a breather between spells. That caused a spike in his workload, which triggered the back injury in Sydney,' he added.

IND vs ENG: All eyes on Jasprit Bumrah's workload

India's Jasprit Bumrah. AP/PTI(AP06_24_2025_000147A) Birmingham: Sunday was a pleasant, breezy day in Birmingham, with the clouds occasionally making way for a harsh sun. There is expected to be a decent cloud cover over Edgbaston this week, meaning overhead conditions will be ideal for a fast bowler to go all out when the second Test between India and England begins on Wednesday. The Indian team, still hurting from the defeat at Headingley last week, enjoyed a day off but speculation and anxiety over pace trump card Jasprit Bumrah 's availability for the second Test still persists. A lot has been spoken about Bumrah 's workload and his availability for just three out of the five Tests on this tour. The decision on Bumrah's workload for this tour, it has learnt, was made as early as the second week of March. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Soham Desai, Team India 's strength and conditioning coach for five years up until the Champions Trophy, said Bumrah's availability and match-selection had been predecided months before. 'When Bumrah couldn't make it to the Champions Trophy, India's Future Tours Programme (FTP) was studied and it was decided that he will only play three Tests in England,' Desai told TOI. India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series While workload management for fast bowlers has been in place in some form or the other for at least half a decade, it is interesting to note how it actually works. Deciding which matches a player will be made available for involves much more than just data coming through various devices, especially in the case of a unique and once-in-a-generation talent like Bumrah. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo 'There are two ways to analyse the workload. There is an objective way, where we collect data from wearable GPS devices. And then there is a subjective way of observing how the bowler is behaving. There are certain benchmarks set for each player as 'normal' behaviour when they are at peak performance,' Desai said. 'If it is observed that a bowler is moving differently or lacks a bit of intensity even in simple tasks like conversations in the team bus, these become markers,' he added. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? While most of it is supposed to be a discreet exercise for physios and trainers, in the case of Bumrah, the bowler himself is acutely aware of his body and understands when he needs to push himself. 'I've known him since the ACL injury in 2014, during his days with the Gujarat domestic team. He is always trying to understand how his body responds to different circumstances,' Desai said. There was excitement in the media contingent here when Bumrah bowled for 40 minutes and batted for a lengthy period in the nets on Saturday after having skipped practice the previous day. 'The selectors and team management sit with the trainers and physios and spell out venue-specific plans for each bowler during a long series. The bowlers are prepared accordingly. It's unlikely that the same bowler will bear the same workload at every venue,' Desai said. Jasprit Bumrah Breathes Fire in the Nets | IND vs ENG 2nd Test Prep However, things become even more complicated when it comes to someone like Bumrah, especially now that the support cast of pacers around him lack bite. 'There is a set number of overs that is decided for Bumrah to bowl per Test. One can go five-seven overs beyond that limit, but what needs to be seen is how those extra overs are bowled. At the MCG in the previous Test series, he bowled those extra overs without much of a breather between spells. That caused a spike in his workload which triggered the back injury in Sydney,' he said. According to Desai, any alteration in initial plans happen two days ahead of a Test, especially when there's a long break between matches like now. 'It then comes down to the team management and bowler himself. It's their call. If Bumrah feels this is a crucial juncture in the series, he usually revisits the plan. But one must take into account the ordeal he faces mentally every time he breaks down,' Desai said. Interestingly, Bumrah held himself back after bowling a total of 43.4 overs at Headingley, compared to the 53.2 overs he bowled at the MCG last Dec. The team management will hope Bumrah feels on top of his game come the Edgbaston Test. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
