Ads on betting sites: Meta, Google get fresh ED summons for July 28
Meta and Google, being investigated by ED for hosting advertisements on their platforms for illegal betting sites , have been given a fresh date of July 28 to appear before the probe agency, after they sought adjournment of the summons issued for Monday. Sources said the tech companies sought more time to collect documents sought by the agency in their ongoing probe against some illegal betting sites operating in India. These betting sites have collected hundreds of crores from Indian citizens by engaging in illegal activity. The ED, in a statement in Jan this year, had said that scammers have been posting ads on platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, offering betting options, part-time jobs, online shopping and jobs, among others. Victims register through a link provided to them and pay a small initial amount, like Rs 100. The scammers then ask for more deposits, promising higher payouts. 'However, when victims attempt to withdraw their earnings, they are told to complete more tasks and pay additional fees. This cycle continues until victims deposit large sums, often in lakhs, only to realise they have been scammed.' In online shopping fraud , scammers attract people with 'offers of very cheap products found via Google or social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Victims receive a purchase link on WhatsApp, register, and pay for the item. The fraudsters then demand additional payments, citing reasons such as customs duties and delivery charges. In the end, the victim loses their money and never receives the purchased item.' Earlier, the ED had attached assets worth Rs 337 crore in a crackdown against illegal betting related to 2024 Lok Sabha results and unauthorised broadcast of IPL cricket matches. 'The attached assets included demat account holdings, lands, flats and commercial warehouses located at Ajmer, Kutch, Daman, Thane & Mumbai (Maharashtra) worth Rs 220 crore of the online betting app Fairplay and its promoters,' the agency had said. This was in addition to assets worth Rs 117 crore attached earlier. The funds laundered through shell companies have been siphoned off to overseas shell entities based out of Hong Kong SAR, China and Dubai. 'More than 400 bank accounts of shell entities were found to be used for these purposes, which are under examination along with trailing/utilisation of funds collected from the public by Fairplay,' the ED had said.

Ayodhya police bust ₹3.85 crore ‘prasad' scam carried out during Ram Temple consecration
In an astonishing revelation by the Ayodhya police, a cyber scam worth ₹3.85 crore was unearthed recently, where devotees were manipulated for deception in the name of prasad for Ram Lalla. The kingpin of the fraud named Ashish Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad exploited the spiritual fervour among devotees since January 22, 2024, through a fake website offering Ram Temple prasad delivered to their doorsteps. Mr. Singh, launched a fake portal, just weeks before the 2024 consecration ceremony, collecting orders from more than six lakh domestic and international devotees between December 19, 2023, and January 12, 2024, offering free delivery of prasad, commemorative coins, temple replicas and idols of the Ram temple, charging a facilitation fee from Indian and overseas devotees. Accused arrested Through his website, the accused collected payments via multiple digital gateways, amassing ₹10.49 crore in transactions, with ₹3.85 crore of which was for prasad delivery alone, while the rest came from sales of other items. The issue was flagged by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust authorities, who noticed suspicious online activity. A police case has been registered under various sections related to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of items, IT act etc. The accused was arrested when he returned from a foreign trip of the United States. Refund The Ayodhya Police successfully refunded ₹2.15 crore to 3,72,520 victims, marking the largest such refund in a cyber fraud case in the State. In recent weeks, the state police intensified efforts to nab cyber fraudsters, with seven interstate accused, who were involved in cyber fraud by creating online IDs through Cricbuzz and Fairplay apps and promising to make customers play games and double their money, have also been arrested in Lucknow.

Three recent Colorado moose attacks all involved people with their dogs
Colorado Parks and Wildlife is urging caution after three separate moose attacks in three days across the state. The department says it's mostly a coincidence that all of the attacks happened in a stretch of only a few days. The incidents range from Fairplay on Friday, May 30, to Grand Lake on Saturday, May 31, and one in Steamboat Springs on Sunday, June 1, where a woman was actually flow to a hospital because of her injuries. In all three incidents, the people attacked had dogs with them, and in the Fairplay attack the dogs were not on a leash. CPW said without question unleashed dogs are by far the most prevalent instigation for moose attacks in Colorado. "If you have your animal off leash, you're not only potentially adding that danger and injury to your animal, but also to yourself," Rachael Gonzales, a spokesperson for CPW. "So a lot of times your dogs, their instinct, they're going to run back towards their human, which then that turns that animal, in this case, a moose, back towards you as well." In Friday's incident in Park County, two women walking with their dogs were trampled by a moose. They escaped by climbing onto a roof and used a fire extinguisher to haze the moose away. CPW said no serious injuries were reported. Saturday was a more serious attack in Grand County. A cow moose charged a couple and knocked a woman to the ground, who then crawled under a small storage area next to their house, according to CPW. Her partner shot and killed the moose in self defense. A calf was later euthanized by CPW due to concerns about its ability to survive in the wild without its mother, and inability to be rehabilitated. Sunday brought yet another attack in Routt County, where a woman walking leashed dogs was seriously injured by a cow moose. A man who was paddleboarding close to the attack in River Creek Park stopped to help and was also kicked. The park, located in Steamboat Springs, is now closed through Wednesday as CPW assesses the area. "In that case, she had her dogs on a leash," Gonzales said. "Unfortunately, she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time." The best advice? Keep dogs on a leash and give moose plenty of space. Gonzales said you can watch for a few signs a moose is getting irritated, and more likely to charge. "Things like licking its lips, its ears are pinned back ... the little heckles and hairs on its back are going to be sticking up. It may be pacing back and forth," Gonzales explained. "Keep an eye on those signs, because if you start to see that, that's your signal that that moose is uncomfortable for whatever reason."
