New coed K-pop group Allday Project blazes different route to success

Challenging industry norms, group bets on streaming, global tours over romantic fan appeal For more than a decade, mixed-gender groups have struggled to find success in the K-pop industry. The last major breakthrough was Koyote, which rose to fame in the early 2000s and remains active today. While DSP Media's KARD has kept the concept alive in recent years, the group has not seen major commercial success, largely due to one key reason: It has not been able to offer fans the kind of pseudo-romantic fantasy that tends to fuel K-pop fandoms. As Hybe Chair Bang Si-hyuk — the mastermind behind BTS — once said, K-pop's explosive global growth over the past decade has been driven by "superfans" who are intensely loyal and emotionally engaged. It is widely understood in the industry that women make up the majority of paying K-pop fans. This demographic trend gives boy bands an edge in sales, as they tend to outperform girl groups in physical album sales and concert ticket revenues. Simulating a romantic bond with fans has become a core marketing tactic: Idols livestream frequently and send personal messages through fandom platforms like Weverse to maintain that connection. 'In K-pop, it's incredibly important to stir emotions like pseudo-romance or girl crush,' said music critic Lim Hee-yun. 'With coed groups, fans may speculate about members dating each other, which is considered taboo in the K-pop scene. That's why Allday Project appears to be targeting the global market more than the domestic one — perhaps sensing an opportunity for coed acts abroad.' A former executive at a major K-pop agency echoed this sentiment, adding that Allday Project is likely focused on international touring rather than physical album sales. 'Coed groups won't sell as many albums. Their music needs to stand out on streaming platforms,' the official said. 'Even if album sales are weak, strong musical identity and recognition overseas can lead to solid concert ticket sales.' The source also noted the group's age makeup: 'Why do you think all the members are adults, with the oldest debuting at 23? It's intentional — they're aiming for a mature, global audience.' Breaking away from easy listening In line with this global-first strategy, Allday Project has also broken away from the "easy listening" trend that has dominated K-pop over the last two to three years. Their latest single, 'Famous,' released last month, features heavy synthesizer basslines and guitar riffs layered over danceable beats, while the rap flows and melodic lines bring a sense of urgency and edge. 'Famous' stormed onto domestic streaming charts within hours of its release. Premiering as a music video first, the track entered Melon's Top 100 at No. 9 within six hours, eventually climbing to No. 1. The group's follow-up, 'Wicked,' debuted at No. 63 on the same chart and reached No. 2 on Vibe's real-time trending chart, signaling impressive digital power for a rookie group. The group's international momentum is also picking up. 'Wicked' was released in two versions, and its 'Movie Set' edition ranked No. 6 on YouTube's trending chart in the US. On Spotify, 'Famous' has racked up over 900,000 streams, while 'Wicked' has surpassed 400,000. Lim says the group could appeal to audiences who are more drawn to music and performance than mere idol-fan dynamics. 'There's potential here to spark a buzz among listeners who aren't already part of boy or girl group fandoms,' he said. 'Allday Project could offer something fresh as a coed group in today's oversaturated K-pop landscape.'

ALLDAY PROJECT's Tarzzan faces mounting backlash from K-pop stans since debut: From visuals to vibe, fans aren't buying it

Rookie co-ed group ALLDAY PROJECT, under THEBLACKLABEL, who made their official debut on June 23, has already seen great success in their home country, South Korea. Just two days after their debut, their first single Famous surged to the top of Melon's 'Top 100' chart, marking a strong start for the group. By June 28, Famous claimed the No. 1 spot on Melon's daily chart, which tracks listener usage over the previous 24 hours. Their second track, Wicked, also showed promise by entering the chart at No. 40, signaling a successful debut run. Tarzzan faces mounting backlash While the group has been gaining massive success, the backlash has also been mounting. Tarzzan was the first member to come under fire even before the group's debut. The rapper of the group has been seen sporting braided hairstyles in teasers and now even during promotions. The controversy escalated to the point that the hashtag #TARZZAN_OUT trended for a long time. However, it seems he and his agency did not bother much, as they went ahead with their schedule. From visuals to vibe, fans aren't buying it While South Koreans are showering love on the group, international K-pop fans are not as on board - especially with Tarzzan. From his looks to even his mannerisms, everything has been scrutinized, with many asking "how he even has fans" or "how he became an idol". The outrage began after an ALLDAY PROJECT community on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a video of him and wrote the words "He's insane" with it. In the video, Tarzzan is seen trying to hype up the crowd and give them flying kisses. The video was then shared on TikTok, and the edit is being circulated on X again, with many calling him names and wondering "how he ever made his debut". One wrote, "Yeah let's lock him in a mental institution QUICK." yeah let's lock him in a mental institution QUICK . Another wrote, "He's like a new version of that green gremlin from Treasure." he's like a new version of that green gremlin from treasure One said, "Pls stop putting that Tarzzan dude on my TL my eyes hurt every time I see him." pls stop putting that tarzzan dude on my tl my eyes hurt every time i see him 🫩 Another said, "If you stan Tarzzan i'm just gonna assume you're racist." if you stan tarzzan im just gonna assume you're racist One added, "On top of being racist and ignorant, Tarzzan is such a fuckin dork. Like nothing I've seen shows a reason for him to be an idol. It's like they only debuted him so YG can meet their CA quota for the month." On top of being racist and ignorant tarzzan is such a fuckin dork like nothing I've seen shows a reason for him to be an idol it's like they only debuted him so yg can meet they're ca quota for the month More about ALLDAY PROJECT The five-member Korean co-ed group ALLDAY PROJECT is composed of Annie, Tarzzan, Bailey, Woochan, and Youngseo, each bringing a unique background to the group. Annie is notably the granddaughter of Lee Myung Hee, the chairwoman of the Shinsegae (Samsung) Group, drawing public interest for her influential lineage. Tarzzan began his career in fashion, making his modeling debut at Seoul Fashion Week 2022, and has since worked with several top global brands. Bailey, originally from the United States, has been active in the dance scene since the age of 14, working as a choreographer and instructor. Woochan was previously part of HYBE's Trainee A project, but the group's debut was ultimately cancelled before launch. Youngseo has a rich trainee history - she trained alongside the members of NewJeans, competed on the survival show R U Next?, and was originally in the final lineup for ILLIT, though she departed the group before their official debut. Joey Chestnut will make his grand return to Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest this summer after last year's ban

It's not summer in NYC without Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, which will return to Coney Island for another snappy session of competitive gorging on Friday, July 4 at Nathan's Flagship restaurant (1310 Surf Ave.) on the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues. And it's simply not the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest without Joey Chestnut, the famed competitive eater who has taken the title at the annual culinary contest a whopping 16 times. And after a controversial year away from the contest, the frankfurter king will officially try to reclaim his throne this summer. Though the Kentucky native has been a faithful fixture of the Brooklyn-based eating competition for years — he won consecutively from 2007 to 2014 and again from 2016 to 2023 — Chestnut was barred from participating in the 2024 edition of the annual contest due to a competing sponsorship with plant-based food company Impossible Foods, a rival to Nathan's Famous. However, per the New York Post, negotiations have seemingly been in place these last few weeks to have Chestnut makes his grand return to the fan-favorite Nathan's event. And the champ himself revealed that those talks were successful: 'I'm thrilled to be returning to the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. This event means the world to me. It's a cherished tradition, a celebration of American culture, and a huge part of my life,' Chestnut said in an official statement posted to his social media accounts on Monday, June 16. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joey Chestnut (@joeychestnut) 'While I have and continue to partner with a variety of companies, including some in the plant-based space, those relationships were never a conflict with my love for hot dogs. To be clear: Nathan's is the only hot dog company I've ever worked with,' the statement continued. 'I respect that there were differences in interpretation, but I'm grateful we've been able to find common ground. I'm excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do, and celebrating the Fourth of July with hot dogs in my hands!' Outside of last year's victor Patrick Bertoletti — who beat 13 challengers by wolfing down 58 full hot dogs, buns and all, in only 10 minutes — the rest of Nathan's 2025 competitors haven't been announced just yet, but having Joey Chestnut back on the frank-scarfing lineup will surely bring extra attention to the summertime ceremonies. Chestnut holds the all-time men's record for eating the most hot dogs in a 10-minute timeframe: an insane 76 franks in 2021, one more than his 2020 record. Who knows how many tubers he'll clear this year!
