Dick Van Dyke pulls out of Malibu comedy event last minute: Here's why
Dick Van Dyke, 99, had to miss a public appearance over the weekend due to illness. He was scheduled to co-host 'Vandy Camp' at the Arlene & Dick Van Dyke Theater in Malibu on June 28. The event was expected to be a light-hearted gathering celebrating comedy and community. However, as People reported, Van Dyke had to bow out at the last minute. His wife, Arlene Silver, 53, addressed the audience at the event. She informed them that the beloved actor wasn't feeling well enough to attend. When you're 99 and a half years old, you have good days and bad days,' she said. Despite his absence, she added she was hopeful about the future. 'I'm pretty confident Dick will be at the next Vandy Camp,' she said. Van Dyke's health concerns and cancelled events Van Dyke's health has kept him from public events before. In September 2024, he was scheduled to attend FanX in Salt Lake City. But just before the event, organizers released a statement: 'We are sorry to announce that Dick Van Dyke is not able to travel to FanX. He expresses his gratitude to all of those who continue to support him, but at almost 99 years of age, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he is able to do at this time,' US Weekly reported. That same sentiment has been echoed by Silver during previous events. Speaking to fans earlier this year, she said Van Dyke's longevity comes with emotional challenges. Van Dyke reflects on his old age Van Dyke has reflected openly on the downside of growing older. He once told fans he had hoped to remake The Odd Couple with his late friend Ed Asner. 'That would've been such fun, and we lost it. I've lost a lot of friends,' he said. Silver added that her husband had 'outlived everybody' he once knew. 'That's the curse of living to almost 100,' she remarked. Still, Van Dyke hasn't lost his sense of humor. Ahead of his 99th birthday in December 2024, he joked to Page Six, saying he was 'praying I make it.' To mark his milestone birthday, Van Dyke appeared in a Coldplay music video for 'All My Love.' The video was shot at his Malibu home. Speaking to the BBC, he said, 'I'm acutely aware that I could go any day now, but I don't know why it doesn't concern me. I'm not afraid of it. I have the feeling that I'm gonna be alright.' Partly sunny and still cool Monday afternoon, but a big warm-up on the way
SALT LAKE CITY () — Happy Monday, Utah! After a few passing valley rain showers and mountain snow showers Monday morning, conditions are improving this afternoon with clearing skies and slightly warmer temperatures. Highs Monday afternoon will warm into the mid to upper 50s for the Wasatch Front and 70s to near 80 for SW Utah. As skies clear and colder air settles in, Monday night is shaping up to be another chilly one. Overnight lows will drop well below normal once again, with some rural valleys dipping to or below freezing. Areas most at risk include the western Uinta Basin and central and southwest Utah valleys, especially in more outlying spots. A Freeze Warning remains in effect through Tuesday morning. Any sensitive vegetation could be impacted in areas where temperatures dip into the 20s briefly. Tuesday, a big high-pressure ridge begins to build in and takes control for the rest of the week. Temperatures will warm from below average to kickoff the week, to well-above average by late this week. Highs along the Wasatch Front will warm into the lower 80s, and highs for SW Utah will jump into the upper 90s. The ridge will bring plenty of dry air, so look for mostly dry conditions to close out the month of May! A weak trough may graze northern Utah this weekend, leveling off the warm-up, but we should remain on the warmer side of things. 14 homes evacuated by gas leak in Lehi
LEHI, Utah () — More than a dozen homes in Lehi have been evacuated after one homeowner came home to the smell of gas. Jeanteil Livingston, a Lehi City spokesperson, said the gas leak has affected a neighborhood in the area of 2700 North and 900 West. Crews were called out just after 9 a.m. and found 'dangerously high' levels of natural gas. West Valley woman accused of extorting money from couple while carrying their surrogate baby The neighborhood was evacuated out of an abundance of caution shortly after, and by 11 a.m., the homes were still under an evacuation order. Livingston told that fire crews, alongside Enbridge Gas, checked all surrounding homes for the presence of gas and determined the issue was isolated to just the original home. The gas supply was shut off, and crews began monitoring the levels, which have started to come down. Once levels dropped to a safer range, fire crews ventilated the home by opening doors and windows. No injuries have been reported as a result of the gas leak. There is no estimate on when the evacuation order will be lifted. Livingston said Enbridge Gas requested that it remain in effect while its crews assess underground gas levels in the area surrounding the home. Large flames at Weber County structure fire fills air with heavy smoke
HARRISVILLE, Utah () — A structure in Weber County was engulfed in flames overnight. Video sent to ABC4 showed heavy smoke and flames coming from a structure near the 2500 block of US-89 between Harrisville and Pleasant View. It is currently unclear what sparked the fire or if there were any injuries as a result. Bill to help fund Salt Palace redevelopment passes committee
SALT LAKE CITY () — A bill that would pave the way for Salt Lake County to help fund the redevelopment of the Salt Palace Convention Center got a thumbs up in a Senate committee on Monday. S.B. 306, otherwise known as 'Convention Center Investment Amendments,' got its favorable recommendation behind a 3-1 vote from the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee, with three absent. Controversial flag bill banning certain flags in classrooms passes House Sen. Daniel McCay (R-Riverton) said Salt Lake County asked for the bill as a way to help finance their ability to replace parts of the convention that will be redeveloped into the . The bill itself does not create any new revenue streams or increase any tax but instead reallocates money from the fourth-quarter transportation fund – a source of revenue Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said can afford to be redistributed. Wilson said aside from a few canyon roads, Salt Lake County is 'wall-to-wall city and state roads.' Reallocating a portion of money from the fourth-quarter transportation fund will still allow the county to maintain its few roads while also completing transportation projects and investing in the Salt Palace. House passes bill preventing abortion providers from teaching in public schools 'We feel this is a good purpose. The rebuilding of the Salt Palace is a win for the community,' said Wilson. 'The creation of the sports entertainment culture and convention district is an absolute win for the community. The thing that excites me the most is the idea that we can connect our assets.' The exact look of a revitalized Salt Palace Convention Center – which regularly hosts large events such as FanX and Outdoor Retailer – is still unclear. Mayor Wilson, however, said that once completed, the building will integrate better with Salt Lake City, making it easier for the public to get around. Sen. Wayne Harper (R-West Jordan) was the lone vote against the bill, only saying he was 'not quite there yet' on the bill. Harper indicated he has had conversations with Sen. McCay and a substitute version of the amendments may be on the way. S.B. 306 will now head toward the Senate Floor where it will face a full vote.
