This Canadian highway is perfect for an idyllic road trip

In a province as big and beautiful as British Columbia, it can be hard to find a drive that stands out from the rest. However, Highway 3, better known as the Crowsnest Highway, takes drivers through lush forests, semi-arid grasslands, high mountain peaks, and valleys. This route runs from Hope, British Columbia, all the way to the edge of the province and beyond into Alberta. The highway's name comes from Crowsnest Pass, although the origin is up for some debate. The British Columbia portion is around 520 miles long (around 830 kilometers), but it's mile after mile of hidden gem after hidden gem, especially if you slow down and take notice of some of the smaller communities along the drive. The drive itself can be done in one day, but if you break it up over a few days, you can explore the many wonderful sites, lakes, towns, and parks along the way. (6 of the best rail adventures in British Columbia) E.C. Manning Provincial Park E.C Manning Provinvial Park has numerous outdoor activities, from hiking to kayaking and more. Photograph by Gordon Montgomery, Shutterstock Almost right after leaving Hope, you'll enter E.C. Manning Provincial Park, often called Manning Park. Manning Park has no shortage of activities for people who enjoy outdoor adventure. Visitors can explore numerous hiking trails, with varying levels of difficulty, and enjoy activities like canoeing on the lakes found within the park. Canoe, stand-up paddleboard, and kayak rentals are available at Lightning Lake. Along with a fully developed resort with cabins, a restaurant, and a store, Manning Park also has 450 front-country car camping sites and 55 backcountry sites. Rock Creek/Midway/Greenwood This cluster of small towns in British Columbia's Boundary Country is easy to explore as you're driving through. As you are coming down from Anarchist Mountain from the Okanagan Valley, Rock Creek is the first town you'll see. This lovely little town is right on the Kettle River, a popular tubing and recreation spot during the warmer months, but it also has a great Saturday Farmer's Market that runs from May to October. The Prospector Pub and Hotel is worth a stop; the patio overlooks the Kettle River and is a great spot to have lunch. Just east of Rock Creek is the town of Midway. The Kettle River Museum is right along the highway and is located at 'Mile 0' on the Kettle Valley Railway, which once ran throughout the region. Here you can learn all about the history of the area and the railway. The museum is located in the original Station House of the KVR and it's possible to rent out the bunk house. Greenwood is a wonderful little community to drive through and an even better one to stop in. At one point, Greenwood boasted the best municipal water in the world. Beyond the award-winning water, Greenwood is packed with restaurants and cafes, including Deadwood Junction, a must-visit spot with great food and coffee, along with locally produced artisanal goods. Just outside of town, Jewel Lake Resort and Jewel Lake Park are picturesque places to spend either the night or a few days. Gibson Pass Ski Area, also known as Manning Park, sits within the Cascade Mountains. Photograph by Jason Rothe, Alamy Stock Photo Grand Forks Located at the confluence of the Granby and Kettle rivers, Grand Forks is the spot for outdoor adventures along the west end of the Crowsnest Highway. (From floatplanes to via ferrata, these are British Columbia's wildest experiences) Grand Forks has a vibrant downtown that's filled with shops and cafes, but where this area really shines is in the trails surrounding the city. Grand Forks is home to trails that can be found in and around town, ranging from easy and flat to hard and hilly, depending on your preferences and skill level. These trails are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities (like horse riding) and provide an excellent way to explore and see local wildlife like bighorn sheep, mule deer, and, if you're lucky, rattlesnakes. Nearby Christina Lake, about a 10-minute drive east, has another 29 trails to choose from, along with Christina Lake itself, which is ideal for swimming, fishing, and boating. PV Ranch Adventures, located just north of Grand Forks, has cabins, campsites, and RV spots. Fernie Fernie would hardly be considered a hidden gem by any standard, but you can't talk about the Crowsnest Highway without at least mentioning this resort town. Downtown Fernie is filled with historical shops, cafes, boutiques, and restaurants. Photograph by Danita Delimont, Alamy Stock Photo However, before you stop in Fernie, it's a good idea to take a breather in Yahk to get ice cream at Two Scoop Steve and visit the goats at the Yahk Soap and Candle Co. Once you've had your fill of ice cream and goats, Fernie is about two hours east of Yahk and is a hot spot for outdoor activities. Fly fishers can book a day on the water with the Elk River Guide Company and experience a world-renowned fishery. Mountain bikers (and hikers) can chase the stoke in eight different trail zones around the city. And everyone can come unwind with a beer at the Fernie Brewing Company at the end of the day. You can also use Fernie as a central point to explore places like Sparwood, home of the Terex Titan dump truck, one the world's largest. It can fit two Greyhound buses and two pickup trucks in its bed at once. Bonus stop Just beyond the provincial border into Alberta is the Crowsnest Pass area. This region is made up of a handful of different communities and is filled with history. The Frank Slide, an infamous mining disaster that happened in the early morning hours of 1903, can be found here. The rubble was never moved and the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre here allows you to learn about the tragedy. If you drive a little farther beyond the border, you'll find the town of Lundbreck, about 30 minutes down Highway 3. This little hamlet is home to Oldman River Brewing, which is well worth the trip. (The ultimate road-tripping itinerary for the Trans-Canadian Highway) Raised on an island in Northern Ontario, Canada, Douglas Paton has a deep appreciation for long drives through small towns. These days, he calls the Southern Interior of British Columbia home, where he writes about travel, fly fishing, and canoeing with polar bears. More often than not, he spends his time wandering small creeks in the mountains looking for fish. You can find him online at or follow his adventures on Instagram.

Scottish farmer pushes for boycott of Israeli produce at city market

Mike Callender, who owns award-winning veg box delivery service East Coast Organics near Haddington in East Lothian, has been boycotting Israeli veg since he launched the [[business]] in 1996. The 62-year-old has been voicing his anger over the genocide being carried out in Gaza in weekly newsletters to around 5000 customers and ex-customers, including his fears around farmers being murdered and their struggle to get their produce to markets. As well as making moves to try and get his farm twinned with one in Palestine as a way of showing support, Callender is pushing for [[Edinburgh]] Farmer's Market – for which he is treasurer on the committee – to become an 'apartheid-free zone', clear of any Israeli produce. READ MORE: Palestine recognition is 'worthless' without concrete action, expert says The dad-of-two told The National: 'At the moment I'm the treasurer of the Edinburgh Farmer's Market, there's five of us on the committee, and maybe about 30 members. I put it to them that the market should become an apartheid-free zone. 'One person thought it was a great idea, another was apprehensive and said we should put it to members, which of course we should. It's fizzled out a bit, but I'm still pushing at it. 'People are claiming it's political but it's got nothing to do with politics. The Co-op members voted for it, so if the Co-op can do it, surely we're more ethical than a supermarket?' A motion proposed at the Co-op AGM in May calling for a cease to all trading with Israel was backed by around 73% of members. It announced in June it would no longer be sourcing carrots from Israel, among other products from 'countries of concern'. Callender (below) said that while many people feel they cannot affect the situation in Gaza, he feels boycotting produce could go some way to helping stop the apartheid if more people and businesses come on board. (Image: Supplied) 'You sort of think people feel there's nothing they can do to change things but boycotting definitely does help and I do think it did help in changing apartheid in South Africa so maybe, [you've got to] hit people where it hurts and something will have to change,' he said. Callendar has been committed to raising awareness of the assault on Gaza ever since the aftermath of October 7, and is passionate about making more people understand the atrocities taking place. 'I think on a personal level I've always supported Palestinians in what they've been going through. I remember a few years ago a journalist being shot by Israeli forces and then when the funeral came and a crowd were carrying the coffin, the Israeli police sort of baton-charged them. It's just absolutely outrageous and from then I've followed it and taken an interest. READ MORE: Donald Trump in Scotland 'can only be a good thing', says Anas Sarwar 'When the Landworkers' Alliance came up with the idea of twinning with a farm in the West Bank, I sort of thought that would have relevance to our customers now because small farms are being raided, farmers are being killed, and having their land stolen.' The Palestine Solidarity Twinning Project is a collaboration between the Landworkers' Alliance (LWA) and the Union of Agricultural Work Committees and aims to build grassroots solidarity with farmers and landworkers in Palestine by connecting them with LWA members in the UK. Callender said there has been the occasional person who has responded negatively to his newsletters, but he said he is prepared to lose customers to stand up for what is right. Asked why he is speaking out about Gaza, he said: 'I think it's just so more people understand what's going on. 'I did a newsletter when the invasion first happened and I put that we'd made a donation to UNRWA. I knew it would make some people angry, but I think more people know about it now and you've even got the Daily Express showing pictures of starving babies on the front cover. 'Even if we lost half our customers, I would still do it again.'

Fort Erie Reports On-Track Wagering Up 23 Percent Opening Day

Fort Erie Reports On-Track Wagering Up 23 Percent Opening Day originally appeared on Paulick Report. Opening Day at Fort Erie Race Track in Ontario was a galloping success on Tuesday evening thanks to a combination of perfect weather, a roaring crowd, and eight exciting races. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Summer Solstice Cup, which featured a packed field of 11 Thoroughbreds hitting the historic dirt oval. Riding atop Ruby's Ghost, jockey Melanie Pinto had her work cut out for her after drawing the 11th post in the gate, but a late burst with an eighth of a mile left sent her charging up from third place and into the lead at the finish line. 'I was a little concerned about being in the 11 post because I knew we would be pretty far out and I wasn't sure how to set up the speed to get to the inside, or if we were going to get stuck out,' said Pinto after the ride. 'But luckily we broke clean, had a really good trip, and it all worked out.' Advertisement The connections of Pinto, owner Charles Fipke, and trainer Michaela Neubauer have been a longtime winning trio at Fort Erie. Having been together for so many years, Pinto said they feel like a family. 'Definitely,' agreed Neubauer. 'Melanie is like my little sister.' The fulsome racing fields attracted plenty of bettors to the wagering windows at the track, with on-track wagering hitting $112,000 for the day, an increase of 23 per cent over last year. Including remote wagering, Opening Day at Fort Erie Race Track reached a handle of $1.7 million. That's a decline from last year's $1.8 million (according to Equibase charts), which was achieved despite canceling the final race on the opening day card due to weather in 2024. Live racing continues through June at Fort Erie, including the track's busiest day of the year, Father's Day, on June 15, where two more cup races will be on the card, alongside a Farmer's Market. It's the track's first Sunday card, which means horses will be hitting the dirt at a special 12:15 p.m. post time. For a full list of the track's race dates and post times, visit This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on May 28, 2025, where it first appeared.
