Sulaf Fawakherji breaks silence on marriage to Bashar al-Assad
ALBAWABA - On social media, a phony marriage certificate purportedly proving a connection between Syrian actress Sulaf Fawakherji and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has sparked intense debate.
Shortly after Fawakherji was formally expelled from the Syrian Artists Syndicate for allegedly endorsing the Assad government and demonstrating a lack of concern for the plight of the Syrian people, the paper started making the rounds.
The paper, dated September 11, 2022, states that Fawakherji marries Assad and names her as a lady who has finished her post-divorce waiting period, suggesting that she and her ex-husband, actor Wael Ramadan, are no longer together.
In a post on her verified Facebook account, Fawakherji replied sarcastically and incredulously, calling the paper a total fabrication. "We didn't invite anybody and kept it small. She added, "I swear, it's laughable," making fun of the assertions. Her message to her detractors was to "discuss ideas without attacking someone's honor" and to examine their obsession with private issues.
Additionally, the actress drew attention to important mistakes in the purported document, such as an erroneous birthday and her father's name being stated incorrectly as "Mohammad" rather than "Mohammad Salim." "I have not divorced, and I won't, if God wills," she said, further denying that she and her husband had ever separated.
For years, opposition speakers have criticized Fawakherji, a well-known ally of the Syrian regime. The distribution of the falsified paper is now much more controversial since her expulsion from the syndicate has rekindled discussion about her public persona and political beliefs.
