Skanska wins contract to build Fazer's $467m chocolate factory in Finland
Skanska has secured a contract for the construction of Fazer's approximately €400m ($467m) chocolate factory in Lahti, Finland. The project aims to enhance Fazer's production capabilities with advanced technology and automation. Skanska's contract is worth €89m and will be included in its Nordic order bookings for the third quarter of 2025. The construction of the factory, located in the Pippo industrial area, is set to begin in the coming months, with operations expected to start in 2028. Fazer noted that the production of chocolates will also partially continue in Vantaa. The new facility will span approximately 33,300m² and integrate Fazer's chocolate expertise with automated production lines and technologies to produce new types of products. It will be carbon dioxide emissions-free while the efficient use of raw materials will significantly minimise production waste. Fazer Group president and CEO Christoph Vitzthum said: 'The investment of approximately €400m is the largest in Fazer's history and it is also significant from a Finnish food industry perspective. 'The new factory will support both our domestic as well as international growth and demonstrates our strong belief in the competitiveness of Finnish food production also in the international markets.' Fazer's investment is supported by Business Finland's industrial investment support programme. Fazer has completed a real-estate transaction with the City of Lahti to facilitate the construction phase, which will employ hundreds of professionals, totalling over 500,000 working hours. The investment will be financed through long-term debt, with a green finance framework allowing for the issuance of green financial instruments. Fazer's new project is expected to contribute to Finnish food exports, with the company already accounting for 15% of these exports. Recently, Skanska secured two new contracts in the US and Sweden: a rail link construction and a multisports facility development, respectively. Finland's Fazer presses ahead with new chocolate factory
Fazer has decided to move forward with its plan for a new chocolate factory the Finnish group had put on hold amid concerns about the country's fiscal policy. Last year, Fazer paused plans to build a new plant in the southern city of Lahti after the Finnish government announced a proposal to raise VAT on confectionery. A year later, the idea was shelved. Today, Fazer said it would proceed with the project, with the site set to be completed in 2028 at a cost of €400m ($467.3m). 'The investment of approximately €400m is the largest in Fazer's history and it is also significant from a Finnish food industry perspective," president and CEO Christoph Vitzthum said. "The new factory will support both our domestic as well as international growth and demonstrates our strong belief in the competitiveness of Finnish food production also in the international markets." The facility, located in the Pippo industrial area of Lahti, will span around 33,300 m2. Lahti is already home to a Fazer crisps factory, a bakery, a gluten-free site and a xylitol facility. Fazer's confectionery brands include Karl Fazer milk chocolate, Geisha and Duml. The company also operates in the bakery, non-dairy, and plant-based food markets. It employs more than 4,000 people in Finland, with other production plants in Vantaa and Lappeenranta. Fazer said Vantaa will continue to host its biscuit factory, a 'large' bakery, head office operations, part of the chocolate production, and the Fazer Experience visitor centre. Lahti already houses a Fazer Mill, a sourdough bread factory, a bakery, a gluten-free bakery, and a xylitol factory. In May, Fazer announced an €11m investment to expand its rye bread production capacity in Lahti. In 2024, Fazer reported net sales of €1.18bn, with a 1% growth after currency adjustments. Comparable net sales, excluding the dairy division, rose by 3%. Comparable EBITDA increased by 3% to €141.4m, and the comparable operating result surged by 14% to €75.9m. Group net sales resulted in a profit of €34.7m, recovering from an €86.5m loss the previous year. Bagdah couple wrongfully deported to B'desh returns
1 2 3 Kolkata: A young migrant couple from Bagdah in North 24 Parganas, wrongfully deported to Bangladesh despite possessing valid Indian identity documents, finally returned home on Tuesday, after intervention by Bengal govt and West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board (WBMWWB). BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh held a flag meeting to resolve the issue after state govt took up the matter with central agencies. Fazer Mondal and his wife Taslima, residents of Hariharpur in Bagdah, went to Maharashtra nearly five months ago in search of work. Fazer secured a job at a construction site in Jan. On June 10, the couple was picked up by Nayanagar police during a drive targeting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Despite showing cops their Aadhaar and voter ID cards, the couple's claims of Indian citizenship were dismissed. Relief and joy washed over the Mondal household in Hariharpur on Tuesday. "I will never send my son to work as a migrant labourer again. We'll find work for him here," said Fazer's father, Tahajul. "If the administration did not act quickly, it would have taken much longer to bring them back. We are thankful to the CM, BSF and police personnel." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why CVS Hides This Cheap 87¢ ED Medication Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo Recalling the ordeal, Fazer said: "I was desperately trying to convince both Maharashtra police and BSF of my legal status. I showed them all my valid identity documents, but no one listened. We lost hope of ever returning, but I am grateful to everyone here that I am safely home." The family said they had earlier got a call from Maharashtra police for additional identification documents, which were immediately sent. Yet, the couple was not released, and all contact subsequently lost. The family later alleged that Fazer and Taslima were forcibly pushed into Bangladesh via the Raiganj border in North Dinajpur. The couple was kept in Bhatari village in Bangladesh, along with several others who were similarly deported. The first confirmation of their location came when BGB contacted the Mondal family on Saturday. Following panic and appeals from the family, the Bengal administration sprang into action. Acting on instructions from CM Mamata Banerjee, WBMWWB officials, Bagdah police and Bagda MLA Madhurparna Thakur coordinated with North Dinajpur authorities and BSF. A flag meeting between BSF and BGB was convened on Sunday. Late on Sunday, Fazel and Taslima were brought back into India through the Raiganj border and taken to Bhatol police outpost. The family came from Bagdah and they were reunited shortly after. Samirul Islam, chairman of WBMWWB, said: "Besides Fazel and Taslima, five migrant workers from Malda, Murshidabad and East Burdwan — who were also wrongfully pushed into Bangladesh — have now been repatriated."

Bengal couple who went to Maha for work pushed into B'desh
Kolkata: A young couple from Bengal's North 24 Parganas who had gone to Maharashtra for work was picked up by police on suspicion of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and handed over to Border Security Force (BSF), who then pushed them into Bangladesh, despite the couple producing documents to prove their identity as Indian citizens, the couple's family claimed. A BSF official said the matter was being handled by the North Bengal Frontier and declined further comment. Sources said Fazer Mondal (in his 20s) and his wife Taslima, from Hariharpur in Bagdah, had moved to Maharashtra after Fazer found a construction job in the state in Jan. Earlier this month, Maharashtra's Naya Nagar police detained the duo during a drive to identify illegal immigrants. The couple had reportedly presented to cops their Aadhaar and voter IDs claiming they were Bengal residents, but their claims were allegedly dismissed. On June 10, Fazer's father Tahajul Mondal received a call from Naya Nagar police asking for more documents. Tahajul said he promptly submitted birth and school certificates to support their Indian citizenships, but the couple was not released. On Saturday, the couple's family members received a call from Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) informing them that the couple had been found in Bangladesh, near the South Dinajpur India-Bangladesh border. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers (See List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo "This is a nightmare. We have no idea how to bring them back," said Fazer's mother Latifa Mondal. Since receiving the call, the family has been running pillar to post. They have approached the Bagdah police, panchayat authorities and the district administration for help. Bagdah MLA Madhurparna Thakur has stepped up and assured the family of support. "I have collected documents from the family and initiated legal steps. All efforts are being made to bring them back safely," Thakur said. She called the incident a "deliberate move driven by an anti-Bengali mindset." "This was done just because they spoke Bengali. The couple was put in danger despite holding Indian documents. I strongly protest this unethical and inhuman act," she added. She further suggested that the deportation was politically motivated saying, "Why were they deported despite valid papers? This seems to be aimed at discrediting Bengal ahead of elections." Samirul Islam, chairman of the West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board, said similar incidents have been reported from other districts as well. "On June 10, we were informed that migrant workers from Malda, Murshidabad and East Burdwan were detained in Mumbai. We sent all relevant documents, yet five people were handed over to BSF without informing us," he said. He said that following chief minister Mamata Banerjee's directions, efforts are on to bring deported workers back. "Is speaking Bengali a crime now? This is painful and shameful," he added. Bengal BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya, however, defended the BSF. "We believe the BSF does not act in a wrong way. Only BSF authorities can clarify the full details," he said.
