JB-Singapore shuttle bus drivers end strike
JOHOR BARU: Some 100 shuttle bus drivers serving the Johor Baru-Singapore route resumed duty yesterday morning after the company agreed to reinstate their previous salary structure, ending a one-day strike that caused major disruptions for thousands of cross-border commuters. The strike was sparked by a revised pay scheme that saw drivers losing between RM800 and RM900 in monthly income. They were also required to make an additional daily trip to Singapore. Previously, they were required to make four trips back and forth between Johor Baru and Singapore. A shuttle bus driver, who wanted to be known only as Atoi, 35, said his monthly salary had previously averaged RM2,800 before the changes were implemented two months ago. "The new structure significantly reduced our earnings. We were not trying to inconvenience commuters, we just wanted our rights respected," he said. "We returned to work only after the company agreed to revert to the original pay terms." He added that the discontent among Singapore-bound shuttle bus drivers over pay cuts and additional duties had been brewing for months. "When our latest salary slips were issued a day late, it was the straw that broke the camel's back, triggering the strike by some 100 drivers," Atoi said. On Monday, the drivers had kept the bus doors shut while parked at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) bus terminal platform, where the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex is housed. The New Straits Times learnt that drivers on the Causeway route usually received higher allowances than those on the Second Link. "We used to earn between RM2,800 and RM2,900 a month. After the adjustment, some of us took home less than RM2,000. "There were also salary deductions that we do not fully understand. The system has become unfair and unclear," he said. The drivers resumed work after the bus company agreed to revert to the previous salary structure following a meeting with Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. The strike began about 5am and triggered a massive congestion at BSI, with some workers resorting to walking across the Causeway to reach their workplaces in Singapore. Operations resumed in stages after Fazli intervened and mediated between the drivers and the company. Anwar Ahmad, 29, a Malaysian cleaner working in Singapore, said yesterday's morning commute went smoothly with no queues at the BSI bus platforms. "Monday was a nightmare. Everything returned to normal today (yesterday). Buses were on time, no delays," he said. Fazli, who is Bukit Pasir assemblyman, confirmed that the service had fully resumed. He expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved in good faith.

State works, transportation, infrastructure, and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed that the strike involved drivers from a local bus company and took place around 6.30am. The drivers refused to transport passengers into Singapore, but the strike concluded by 8am. 'During the strike, to ensure that travellers could continue their journey into the island republic, we arranged for other buses to transport passengers,' Mr Fazli said. However, he acknowledged that some travellers opted to walk across the Causeway into Singapore. The exact number of people walking or drivers involved in the strike remains unknown. Mr Fazli, who is also the Bukit Pasir assemblyman, stated that the bus company and driver representatives have been urged to resolve their issues. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. General Ali Fazli, the Deputy Coordinator-in-Chief of the IRGC, said on July 3, 2025 that Iran had long anticipated an attack by the U.S. and the Zionists, and that in the recent conflict it has emerged as the foremost missile power in the region. He said that Iran only deployed 25-30% of its missile capabilities during the conflict, and that it has not opened even one of its underground missile cities. He said that Iran's forces are resolute and fully prepared for an extensive defense of the country, that Iran is the strongest it has been since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, that the missile production lines are active, and that Iran has never been more prepared than it is today. Pasir Gudang highway repairs deadline set for contractor
JOHOR BAHRU: The contractor handling the Pasir Gudang Highway widening project has until tomorrow to complete repairs on the damaged road sections. The directive comes after public complaints over potholes and poor lighting along the stretch. Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh emphasised the need for full pavement repairs instead of temporary patches. He inspected the site following numerous reports of hazardous road conditions. 'It is true that certain sections of the road surface are potholed and dangerous for road users, with several poorly lit areas as well. This is happening along the stretch where the road widening project from four lanes to six lanes is underway,' he said in a Facebook post. Fazli also ordered improved lighting across the project area, moving beyond temporary blinkers to enhance safety for motorists. -BERNAMA

Gantry toll project to reduce congestion in Kong Kong, SDE areas of Johor
JOHOR BARU: The construction of a gantry toll structure, expected to be completed by Dec 15, is set to reduce traffic congestion in the Kong Kong area and along the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE). Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the project has achieved 20.43 per cent progress, ahead of the scheduled timeline. He said the gantry toll construction is a solution to the long-standing dispute over the opening of a flyover that has already been completed. "This flyover, built by Meridin East Sdn Bhd, was completed in 2021 and connects the Kong Kong area to the SDE. It was constructed with the objective of dispersing traffic from the Kong Kong residential area to the Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat industrial areas. "The flyover, which cost RM53 million, helps shorten travel from Jalan J10 to Pasir Gudang/Tanjung Langsat, avoiding congestion that typically occurs during peak hours," he said in a statement. Fazli said, without the flyover, users would have to go through the Cahaya Baru toll plaza, make a U-turn at the Tiram toll plaza, and return to the earlier toll plaza, adding 40km to the journey and incurring an additional toll charge of RM11.20. He said the situation also led some drivers to make U-turns at unsafe spots, thereby posing road safety risks. He added that with the flyover's opening, commuters from the Kong Kong area can directly access the SDE and continue to the Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat industrial zones, cutting their travel distance to just 7km.
