Fresh off extension, Seth Lugo looks to lead Royals past Braves

July 29 - What might have been right-hander Seth Lugo's final start as a member of the Kansas City Royals has turned into the beginning of an extended stay with the club. Meanwhile, one of Atlanta's recent acquisitions will try to help the Braves' depleted rotation. Fresh off of signing a contract extension, Lugo will try to help the host Royals even this series Tuesday night against right-hander Erick Fedde and Atlanta. Lugo (7-5, 2.95 ERA) was the subject of consistent trade rumors as the deadline approaches on Thursday. Instead, the 35-year-old agreed to a two-year, $46 contract extension beyond this season, his second with the team. "Seth made it very apparent that he wanted to be here," said Royals executive vice president and general manager J.J. Picollo. "I do feel very confident that we would have not found somebody that had a couple of years' control, was a runner-up Cy Young Award winner, All-Star, Gold Glover. ... I don't think we're finding that type of talent in the trade market." Lugo, a 16-game winner with the Royals in 2024, is coming off his 11th quality start of the season. On Wednesday, he allowed two runs, four hits and struck out six over six innings of an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Now, he will pitch without a trade cloud overhead. "Rumors that come up over the past month, I wanted to be here next year," Lugo said. "We've got to show up every day, and it's something we shouldn't take lightly." Locking up Lugo was imperative after the Royals announced Monday that All-Star Kris Bubic will miss the rest of the season with a strained rotator cuff. Lugo also will try to help Kansas City rebound after it tied a franchise record with 14 walks allowed in Monday's 10-7 loss to the Braves, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Lugo has made 29 career appearances versus the Braves and is a stellar 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in five starts against them. Fedde (3-10, 5.22 ERA), meanwhile, was designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday and traded to Atlanta on Sunday. Though he allowed a whopping 26 runs, 33 hits -- including eight homers -- and walked 11 over 17 2/3 innings while going 0-4 in his last five starts with the Cardinals, he's apparently a viable option for the Braves. "I've had highs and lows in this game, and I'm just trying to be professional, show up every day and give it my best," Fedde told Fedde, however, was exceptional in his only two career starts versus Kansas City. Both coming last season with the Chicago White Sox, he yielded one run over 10 2/3 innings. Kansas City's Maikel Garcia is 0-for-3 versus Fedde. However, he's batting .423 with five RBIs in the last seven games. On Monday, Atlanta's Ronald Acuna Jr. and Marcell Ozuna each hit a two-run homer. Acuna is 6-for-12 versus Lugo, while Ozuna, the subject of trade rumors, is 1-for-11 with five strikeouts and five walks against him. --Field Level Media

Braves put Grant Holmes on injured list and acquire pitcher Erick Fedde in trade with Cardinals

Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Every member of Atlanta's opening-day rotation is injured, so the Braves swung a trade Sunday to bring in a new starter. Atlanta acquired right-hander Erick Fedde and cash from the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named or cash. To clear a spot for Fedde on the 40-man roster, the Braves transferred pitcher Grant Holmes to the 60-day injured list — hours after placing him on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation. With the news involving Holmes, all five starters who broke camp with the club are on the 60-day injured list. Atlanta (44-60) lost 8-1 at Texas on Sunday and has dropped five in a row, falling 12 games behind in the NL wild-card race. 'We're going to figure out a way to piece this thing together,' manager Brian Snitker said. 'That's all you can do 'cause the games aren't going to stop because we lost our rotation.' Holmes was replaced on the active roster by reliever Daysbel Hernandez, who was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett. The 32-year-old Fedde is 3-10 with a 5.22 ERA in 20 starts this season and has lost his last seven decisions. He has made at least 27 starts in each of the past four seasons. Atlanta has five starters on the 60-day injured list. The problems began during the first week of the season with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez, who went on the IL on March 29 with shoulder inflammation following one start, resulting in surgery. Right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver has been sidelined since May 29 with an elbow strain that required Tommy John surgery. Ace lefty Chris Sale fractured his rib cage diving to field a grounder June 21 against the New York Mets. And right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach broke his elbow July 2. Throw in Holmes, and those five have made 63 combined starts this season. 'We're professional,' Snitker said. 'We're getting paid to do this. We signed a contract. So every day, we're going to go out and give it our best shot and win the game.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Dodgers Trade Idea Lands Cardinals' Erick Fedde

Dodgers Trade Idea Lands Cardinals' Erick Fedde originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to win games despite their pitching staff. Although Shohei Ohtani has made his illustrious return to the mound, his one-inning outings can only offer so much. With over 15 pitchers on the injured list, including Cy Young winner Blake Snell and All-Star Tyler Glasnow, Los Angeles needs to fortify their starting rotation to stay atop the NL West post-trade deadline. Advertisement While Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara tops most teams' lists, the Dodgers should refrain from overspending. Glasnow and Snell are expected back after the All-Star break, and Ohtani should be throwing more than one inning by that time. In that case, opting for an affordable piece that the Dodgers are not tied to long-term makes more sense. Yahoo Sports' Jake Mintz suggests the Dodgers target St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Erick Fedde at the trade deadline. St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Erick Fedde (12) delivers a pitch in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Chenoy-Imagn Images "The Dodgers currently have one and a half reliable playoff starters: Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Dustin May when the wind is right. Their pitching infirmary currently has 16 patients if you include the still rehabbing pitching version of Shohei Ohtani," Mintz wrote. Advertisement "This injury barrage is even worse than the one L.A. overcame last season to win the World Series. Right now, they need to acquire at least one playoff starter, maybe two, depending on how much faith they have in Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell's recovery timeline." Fedde, 32, is in the final year of a two-year, $15 million contract, filling the mold of a rental arm. He also would not need to be a top-of-the-rotation pitcher, as he can slot in behind Los Angeles' big three. In 15 starts, Fedde has a 3.54 ERA, 55 strikeouts, and a 1.29 WHIP across 84 innings. Providing stability to the Dodgers' rotation, Fedde is an excellent trade option. However, Fedde's availability hinges on one thing: the Cardinals' standings in the NL playoff picture. Currently, 4.5 games behind the NL Central lead and one game removed from the last Wild Card spot, St. Louis does not have to trade any of its players, especially Fedde, if they feel close enough to contend. The next month will determine the Cardinals' future, and if they fall in the standings, the Dodgers should pounce on the opportunity to acquire Fedde. He is healthy and consistent -- two characteristics currently lacking in Los Angeles' starting rotation. Chicago White Sox drop 7th straight with 5-4 loss to St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of doubleheader

Third baseman Miguel Vargas and starter Erick Fedde are linked as part of last year's three-team trade. The Sox sent Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham to the St. Louis Cardinals and got Vargas as part of a package from the Dodgers while sending reliever Michael Kopech to Los Angeles. Vargas faced Fedde in a big spot during Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader at Rate Field. The teams were tied, and the Sox had a runner on third after Andrew Benintendi's one-out triple in the fifth inning. Vargas lined a single back up the middle and Benintendi scored to put the Sox ahead. But they couldn't hold the lead, eventually falling 5-4 in the opener. The Cardinals tied it in the sixth, only for the Sox to go-ahead again in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run home run from Michael A. Taylor. The Cardinals responded with a three-run eighth — capped by a go-ahead RBI single from pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi's Michael A. TaylorYohel Pozo. The Sox have lost seven straight. They are 4-20 in one-run games. 'Got to find a way,' manager Will Venable said of another one-run loss. 'Credit to the guys for being in this spot for playing so many close games. Now we have to make that one play, one pitch, one hit to get over the hump. We have to keep going.' Starter Sean Burke kept the Sox in the game early when it could have gotten out of hand. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the first. Burke limited them to one run in the inning, a Willson Contreras sacrifice fly to left. 'Just going into the mindset of not trying to strike everybody out, still just approaching the quality pitches, being smart with what I'm doing pitch-selection-wise,' Burke said of the first inning. 'Those situations, if you can get out of that with one run, take that as a win and then kind of build better momentum going forward.' He did just that, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. 'I felt good overall,' Burke said. 'Thought the curveball was good today. Fastball felt good. I thought I mixed some good two-seams to get guys off the four-seam. Slider felt good. I feel like there was a couple sliders I threw a little too middle, but other than that, felt pretty good with everything.' Fedde, who went 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts for the Sox last season before being traded, allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Vargas singled against Fedde in the fourth. Kyle Teel followed with a single and Luis Robert Jr. advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Noda struck out, but Josh Rojas hit a grounder back up the middle. Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn fielded the ball, spun and fired to first. But the throw was off the mark, and Vargas came home to tie the score. Vargas broke the tie with his RBI hit in the fifth. '(He's) deep in the count, taking good swings at good pitches and obviously got the job done,' Venable said. 'Nice to see him come through in that spot.' The Cardinals evened the score in the sixth when Lars Nootbaar drew a bases-loaded walk against reliever Brandon Eisert. The lefty rebounded, striking out Jordan Walker. Pinch hitter Lenyn Sosa struck out to begin the bottom of the sixth but reached first when the ball bounced away from catcher Iván Herrera on a wild pitch. And with one out, Taylor homered to left to give the Sox a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals tied it in the eighth with a two-run home run from Contreras against reliever Cam Booser. Nolan Gorman then hit a grounder back to the mound, and Booser threw wildly to first. Gorman advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a flyout. Pozo drove him in with a single. The Sox were retired in order in the eighth and ninth, falling to 28 games under .500 at 23-51. 'I don't think we're far off in these games,' Burke said of the close losses. 'I don't think it's any one part that you kind of point out and say, 'This is the reason why we're losing these games.' There's a bunch of things we can do better as a team top to bottom. A game like that, if I have a better start from the beginning, maybe I'm able to go a full six with no runs. Or that last inning, maybe one or two things go differently, I'm able to finish that inning. Hitting-wise, if you get another hit. 'I don't think it's ever one aspect of a team. Just overall we have to be a little better in those games, and I think now that we've been in a lot of one-run games, close games, the experience with that will help us do better with it in the future.'

Peralta, Brewers hand the Cardinals their 6th straight loss with a 3-2 victory

MILWAUKEE -- Freddy Peralta struck out six over six innings of one-run ball and the Milwaukee Brewers scraped out just enough against Erick Fedde for a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. After retiring the Cardinals in order through the first three innings, Peralta (6-4) gave up four hits and a walk. St. Louis has lost six straight to fall 1 1/2 games back of second-place Milwaukee and six games behind first-place Chicago in the NL Central. The Cardinals scored a run in the fifth when Alec Burleson and Nolan Arenado opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, and cut it to one run in the ninth on Victor Scott's RBI single off Trevor Megill. Fedde (3-6) also faced the minimum through three. Milwaukee's first hit came in the fourth when Sal Frelick led off with a single that hit Fedde on the left wrist. After getting checked out by the training staff, Fedde stayed in the game and William Contreras put Milwaukee on the board with an RBI double in the inning. The Brewers opened the sixth with back-to-back singles before taking the lead on Contreras' sac fly that brought Fedde's day to an end. The Brewers scored once more in the inning when Christian Yelich reached on a fielder's choice. Peralta is 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA in seven home starts this season. Milwaukee is 6-1 in those contests. Milwaukee LHP Jose Quintana (4-1, 2.86 ERA) was set to face RHP Andre Pallante (4-3, 4.75 ERA) on Saturday. ___
