Islamic New Year 2025: UAE declares June 27 a private sector holiday
The UAE has officially declared Friday, June 27, 2025, as a paid public holiday for the Islamic New Year — giving residents across the country a welcome long weekend. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation announced on Monday that the private sector would observe the day off, following an earlier confirmation from the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources for public sector employees. The holiday marks the beginning of the Islamic year 1447 AH and commemorates the Hijrah — the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE — a defining moment that signifies the start of the Islamic lunar calendar. Though the Islamic New Year, or Ra's As-Sanah Al-Hijriyah , is not traditionally celebrated with the same prominence as Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha, it remains a significant spiritual occasion and is recognised as an official public holiday in the UAE. With the day falling on a Friday, many in the country will enjoy an extended weekend. Looking ahead, the next expected public holiday will be Mawlid Al Nabawi , the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), likely to fall on Thursday, 4 September 2025 — subject to official moon-sighting confirmation. The UAE's final public holidays for the year will be Commemoration Day and National Day, observed on 2 and 3 December respectively.

According to tradition, Eid Al Adha is held to honour Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, after being instructed to do so by God. Prophet Ibrahim told his son of the dream, and the son then told his father to follow the order. But God intervened, sending a sheep to take his son's place. The occasion of Eid Al Adha is usually marked with a few days off for both the public and private sectors. At the moment, the public holiday has only been announced for the public sector, but we can expect the announcement to come in for the private sector soon. What other public holidays are there in 2025? After Eid Al Adha, the next public holiday in 2025 is the Islamic New Year which will fall on Friday, June 27, 2025. Prophet Mohammed's (PBUH) birthday will then fall on Monday, September 1, 2025. After September, our next public holiday is in December for Commemoration Day and UAE National Day. Commemoration Day falls on Monday, December 1, and UAE National Day will follow directly after on December 2 and 3 which is Tuesday and Wednesday. Which means, if you enjoy a two-day weekend, you will have a lovely five-day long weekend. However, we will have to wait for the official announcements, so stay tuned to for the announcements. Eid Al Adha 2025 holidays announced for UAE public sector employees
Workers in the public sector will enjoy a four-day holiday for Eid Al Adha next week. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Federal Authority For Government Human Resources. The four-day holiday will begin on Thursday, June 5, and end on Sunday, June 8, with work resuming on Monday, June 9. Eid Al Adha will begin on Friday, June 6, authorities confirmed on Tuesday evening. The announcement came after the UAE's moon-sighting committee observed the crescent moon, which heralds the start of Dhu Al Hijja, the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar, on Tuesday evening. It means Dhu Al Hijja will begin on Wednesday, allowing for the start dates of both Hajj – which falls on the eighth day of the month – and Eid Al Adha, which starts on its 10th day, to be determined. The Hajj pilgrimage is to begin on Wednesday, June 4, with Arafat Day, the second day of the week-long Hajj pilgrimage, marked on Thursday, June 5.
