UAE nuclear regulation authority says no impact on UAE after US strikes on Iran
The United Arab Emirates' Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation said there was no impact on the country following strikes by the US on Iran's nuclear facilities, UAE's state news agency reported on Sunday. Earlier on Sunday, the Saudi regulatory authorities said that 'no radioactive effects were detected' in the Gulf region after US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. Kuwait also issued a similar statement saying it "did not detect an increase in radioactive traces in Kuwaiti airspace and waters." US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday night that American forces had struck three nuclear sites in Iran, calling the operation 'a spectacular military success' and warning that more attacks would be ordered if Tehran did not agree to a deal.

From the outset, the UAE adopted a collaborative and open approach, forging robust international partnerships, most notably with the Republic of Korea and the United States, to drive forward its nuclear ambitions. He highlighted the country's success in developing a global model for integrating nuclear power into a diverse and innovative energy portfolio. Through a robust network of strategic and technical international partnerships, these institutions have facilitated knowledge transfer, experience exchange, and the development of specialised human capital. Cooperation with the Republic of Korea has served as the cornerstone for the successful development of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant . Over time, this partnership has expanded to include new investment opportunities in international ventures, including the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). On the regulatory front, the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) maintains agreements with its Korean counterpart covering joint inspections and capacity building. These ties are further strengthened through regular meetings to monitor technological advancements and regulatory developments. With the United States, the UAE has signed a series of strategic agreements aimed at advancing nuclear innovation and sustainability. These include a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to develop solutions for producing hydrogen, water, and steam at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. The UAE has also partnered with TerraPower to support the development of advanced reactors, and signed an MoU with General Atomics (GA), a leading US advanced technology solutions company, to collaborate on using advanced technologies and materials for nuclear energy supply. Most recently, a partnership was announced with GE Vernova to jointly evaluate the deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology internationally. As part of its efforts to expand its network of strategic partnerships, the UAE is actively exploring avenues of cooperation with China in the development and operation of nuclear power plants, both domestically and in third countries. Areas of collaboration include the operation and maintenance of nuclear facilities, the development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, nuclear fuel supply chains, and investment opportunities. In parallel, FANR has strengthened its ties with counterpart agencies through agreements that enhance cooperation in nuclear safety, security, non-proliferation, and capacity building, further reinforcing the UAE's commitment to global nuclear governance. In a move that underscores the expanding international footprint of the UAE's nuclear programme, ENEC has signed a cooperation agreement with Romania. As part of the agreement, the UAE will support the development of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project in Romania, backed by an investment of $275 million. The UAE continues to affirm its leadership as a regional model for countries pursuing nuclear energy as a strategic option. UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have concluded the first bilateral cooperation initiative in the nuclear regulatory industry. The cooperation follows the 2019 agreement on the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy between the two nations. This was followed by regulatory partnerships focused on exchanging expertise, enhancing legislative frameworks, and strengthening emergency preparedness. Further expanding its regional outreach, the UAE and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at COP28. The MoU sets the framework to explore opportunities for cooperation in advancing the use of peaceful nuclear energy and knowledge exchange.

29 May 2025 17:10 TOKYO 2025 (WAM)A high-level delegation from the United Arab Emirates, comprising representatives from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, conducted an official visit to Japan to enhance bilateral cooperation in advanced radiotherapy—particularly heavy ion therapy—as well as in related regulatory, healthcare, and research by the Director-General of FANR, Christer Viktorsson, the visit aimed to gain in-depth insights into Japan's leadership in heavy ion therapy, including regulatory frameworks, operational practices, safety protocols, and training programs required to build national capacity for utilising such the visit, the UAE delegation held high-level meetings and technical exchanges with key Japanese institutions, including Yamagata University's Heavy Ion Medical Center, the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST), the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), and Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation visit follows the UAE's recent announcement to establish the region's first heavy ion therapy centre at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a landmark initiative that underscores the country's commitment to advancing cancer care and positioning Abu Dhabi as a hub for world-class oncology said, 'This visit reflects FANR's commitment to ensuring the safe and effective use of radiation in medicine through global collaboration. Japan's experience in advanced radiotherapy and regulatory oversight offers valuable lessons that will help realise the UAE's vision of becoming a leader in healthcare innovation, strengthening its knowledge-based economy, and promoting medical tourism. Integrating such state-of-the-art technologies enhances the UAE's global standing in both healthcare and scientific research.'Heavy ion therapy is an advanced form of radiotherapy known for its precision and efficacy. It delivers high doses of radiation directly to cancer cells while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment is especially effective for inoperable or treatment-resistant tumours, such as large cancers or liver metastases, and is associated with reduced treatment frequency and lower risk of secondary UAE delegation's discussions also covered regulatory licensing and oversight requirements, safety and operational standards, and the training frameworks needed to ensure a skilled workforce capable of safely managing such sophisticated technologies.
