Urban youths must lead climate change action says Dr Zaliha
KUALA LUMPUR: Urban youths must take proactive steps in addressing climate change rather than merely understanding its effects, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She emphasised their crucial role as agents of change for future sustainability. 'Every action you take, no matter how small, can have a greater impact than we expect. Don't waste this opportunity,' she said during the launch of the Federal Territories-level 2025 Climate Change and Green Energy Leadership Project (IKLIM). Dr Zaliha stressed that initiatives like IKLIM go beyond awareness, proving that youths can spearhead meaningful change. She referenced a recent study in the Earth System Science Data journal, warning that current carbon emission rates could deplete the global carbon budget by 2028, making it nearly impossible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Kuala Lumpur, with its population exceeding two million and a GDP of nearly RM270 billion last year, faces significant climate challenges. The city produces up to 9.3 tonnes of carbon per capita annually, highlighting the strain of rapid urbanisation on environmental balance. Despite this, Dr Zaliha noted progress through the Low Carbon Society Blueprint 2030 and Kuala Lumpur Climate Action Plan 2050. 'Alhamdulillah, Kuala Lumpur has reduced its carbon intensity from 30 grammes of CO2 per ringgit of GDP in 2010 to nearly seven grammes in 2024—a 75 per cent reduction in 14 years,' she said. - Bernama

Desa Pandan traders relocation talks to resume soon says Dr Zaliha
KUALA LUMPUR: A follow-up engagement session with traders affected by infrastructure upgrades in Desa Pandan will be held soon, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. The session will involve discussions on relocation options for nine traders impacted by the ongoing upgrade works. 'Insya-Allah, we will meet them again this month to discuss suitable relocation options, as this is part of the 'Lestari Niaga' initiative currently being implemented in Kuala Lumpur,' she said. Dr Zaliha noted that while some traders have agreed to relocate, others remain hesitant. The upcoming meeting aims to finalise agreements and expedite the road-widening project, which is crucial for public convenience. She spoke after officiating the Federal Territories-level 2025 Climate Change and Green Energy Leadership Project (IKLIM) launch. Previous engagement sessions were held in November 2024 and January this year, including vacancy notices for the affected area. The minister has directed the Federal Territories Department (JWP) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to meet traders promptly and provide relocation assistance. 'We will ensure they have the necessary facilities to continue their businesses,' she added. DBKL had earlier postponed demolition works at Jalan 2/76, Desa Pandan, following a commotion on July 15. She said the session involving her ministry and the nine traders would discuss the relocation of those impacted by the upgrade works in the area. 'Insya-Allah, we will meet them again this month to discuss suitable relocation options, as this is part of the 'Lestari Niaga' initiative currently being implemented in Kuala Lumpur. 'Some have agreed, but there are still a few who have not. Therefore, this upcoming session is important to reach a mutual agreement and expedite the road-widening project there, which is crucial for public use,' she said. Dr Zaliha was speaking to reporters after officiating the Launch Ceremony of the Federal Territories-level 2025 Climate Change and Green Energy Leadership Project (IKLIM) here today. Dr Zaliha said prior engagement sessions had been held since November 2024 and continued in January this year, including the issuance of vacancy notices for the affected area. She also instructed the Federal Territories Department (JWP) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to meet with the traders promptly and provide them with relocation options. 'So I believe they need not worry about this matter. We will assist them by ensuring they have the necessary facilities to continue doing business,' she said. Previously, DBKL stated that demolition works at Jalan 2/76, Desa Pandan, scheduled for two days ago (July 15), had to be postponed following a commotion at the site.
