Your guide to July 4 fireworks in the Seattle area

Fireworks shows are set to light up skies across the Puget Sound region — from Lake Union to the Eastside and beyond — this Fourth of July. Why it matters: Watching a professional fireworks display lets you mark Independence Day without breaking local laws — and without risking a trip to the ER. Here are a few prime places to mark America's 249th birthday this year with a boom. Seafair 4th of July Fireworks will ignite over Lake Union about 10:15pm, with food trucks, music, beer gardens and kids' activities preceding the show at both Gas Works and Lake Union parks. Admission is free, though you can pay for reserved seating with a better view. Bellevue Family 4th The big fireworks show begins at 10:05pm at Bellevue's Downtown Park. Food vendors, live music and family activities start at 5pm. Come early to Log Boom Park for music, food trucks, face painting, games and crafts starting at 7:30pm. The fireworks blast off at 10. Food trucks, music and inflatable bouncy houses are among the draws at this family-friendly event, which gets underway at 7pm. The fireworks will light at 9:45. Everett's "Thunder on the Bay" You can view the fireworks over the Snohomish River and Port Gardner Bay from a number of local parks, the city suggests. The show begins at 10pm. A free festival will be held at Legion Memorial Park starting at 3pm. There's no parking on the holiday, but the city offers a shuttle from Everett Community College. Tacoma Summer Blast Fireworks will shoot off around 10pm and be visible from along the Ruston Way waterfront. Starting around noon, Dune Peninsula Park and Cummings Park will have beer gardens, food vendors and music. Cummings Park will offer a kids' zone with a bounce house, games and crafts. Federal Way's "Red, White, & Blues Festival" The music and fun starts at 4pm at Celebration Park, followed by a fireworks show at 10:15. Kent Fourth of July Splash The fireworks will light at 10pm at Lake Meridian Park. The party starts at 5, featuring music and food vendors. Take the free shuttle because only ADA parking will be allowed on site. Sammamish's "Fourth on the Plateau" The celebration at Commons Park will feature kids activities and food trucks starting at 5pm, culminating in a fireworks display at 10. Carnation Music and beer gardens kick off the party at Remlinger Farms at 4pm, followed by a fireworks show at 9:45 (although it's possible the fire marshal will cancel the fireworks display if wildfire risk is too high.) 3rd of July in Mountlake Terrace Get patriotic a day early at Mountlake Terrace's Ballinger Park, with a pie-eating contest, field games, a DJ and food trucks starting at 6pm July 3.

Amazon closes Fresh grocery store south of Seattle; state filing says 125 workers impacted

The Amazon Fresh location in Federal Way, Wash., before it opened in 2022. (GeekWire File Photo / Taylor Soper) Amazon closed a Fresh grocery store in Federal Way, Wash., the company confirmed on Monday. The store's last day of business was Sunday. 'Certain store locations work better than others, and after an assessment of our offering we've decided to close our Amazon Fresh store in Federal Way,' Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch said in a statement to GeekWire. A filing by the Washington state Employment Security Department said the closure would impact 125 workers, with an effective separation date of Aug. 19. Amazon said all store employees are being supported through the transition and will have the opportunity to transfer to roles at nearby sites. A post on Reddit at the end of last week first alerted that the store was closing in four days, less than three years after it opened. Buch said Amazon remains committed to its grocery offerings and will continue to refine its portfolio of stores as it learns which locations and features resonate most with customers. The store opened on Aug. 11, 2022, in an old Sears location at The Commons, a mall at 1928 S. Commons in Federal Way, 22 miles from Seattle. The Federal Way Mirror reported at the time that hundreds of people lined up at dawn outside the store for the chance to receive gift cards of varying amounts and Amazon Fresh tote bags. An Amazon-owned Whole Foods store also closed on Seattle's Capitol Hill last week, seven years after opening at the base of a luxury apartment tower at the corner of Broadway and Madison Street. Amazon cited performance and growth potential in a statement about that closure. In April 2024, Amazon closed a Fresh grocery store in the same neighborhood at 610 E. Pike St., four years after it first opened as an Amazon Go Grocery. There are 64 Amazon Fresh locations in the U.S. In the Seattle region, there are still Fresh stores on South Jackson Street and on Aurora Avenue North. There is also a store in Bellevue. From the initial launch of Amazon Fresh in 2007 to the $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017 and beyond, Amazon has had mixed results in grocery. Over the past few years the company introduced new store formats, closed some stores, paused and restarted expansion, and shifted away from its 'Just Walk Out' checkout-free technology in its large format Fresh stores. According to Amazon, its recent redesign of many Amazon Fresh stores has resonated with customers, with average monthly customer spend in store increasing by more than 20%. More recently Amazon has launched small format 'Daily Shop' Whole Foods stores and an automated micro-fulfillment center co-located within a Whole Foods store. Amazon said it had more than $100 billion in gross sales of groceries and household essentials in 2024, excluding sales from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh. Previously:

HenderWorks Founder Launches the Book SPINE, A Strategic Blueprint for Inclusive Leadership and Sustainable Change

06/05/2025, Federal Way, Washington // PRODIGY: Feature Story // Effenus Henderson, a longtime champion of workplace equity and founder of HenderWorks Consulting, has announced the release of his new book, SPINE: The DEI Backbone for Agility and Adaptability in a VUCA World. It is a comprehensive framework for leaders who aim to create resilient, inclusive systems that thrive in their business DNA. The book provides the essential structural integrity, both literally and metaphorically, for organizations to adapt, endure, and lead with purpose. Drawing on decades of front-line experience, including his tenure as Chief Diversity Officer at a renowned forest products company, his involvement at the United Nations and global standards bodies, and his current work as co-director and president of the Institute of Sustainable Diversity and Inclusion, Henderson distills his insights into a practical, five-part methodology. Strategy, Practice, Ideation, Need, and finally Execution. This leadership-driven methodology starts with Strategy, to craft a clear, actionable plan in the DEI initiatives that align with the organization's mission, values, and strategic direction. Once the framework is in place, the next obvious step is to Practice, implementing daily actions that support the initiatives. However, with ever-changing surroundings, companies cannot continue with the same practices forever. That is why Ideation is important, generating innovative ideas to drive DEI efforts linked to organizational outcomes. This includes focusing on the specific, high-impact Needs of the organization and its stakeholders. Finally, for sustainability in these efforts, Execution needs to be inclusive, data-driven, outcome-based, and have a lasting impact. ' SPINE is a reflection of my life's work,' said Henderson. 'It encapsulates the lessons I've learned from advising global organizations, founding HenderWorks, and co-leading the development of the international standard for diversity and inclusion in organizations. This book is my roadmap for others seeking to build systems that are not only inclusive but also resilient, ethical, agile, and aligned with performance and leadership outcomes.' Henderson's consulting firm, founded in 2000, has been a quiet yet powerful force in the evolution of DEI strategy. The firm partners with organizations to create inclusive governance systems and people management structures, implement metrics that matter, and ensure equity is infused at every level of decision-making. Initially incubated during Henderson's time at a renowned forest products company, the firm grew into a full-scale DEI consultancy following his retirement in 2013. Since then, HenderWorks has become a trusted partner for institutions seeking meaningful change. One of the most critical contributions Henderson has made to the global DEI landscape is his role as convenor of the ISO working group that developed ISO 30415 in 2021, which formalized a global standard for DEI practice. This framework moved the field from broad, performative statements to actionable, trackable change management strategies, a theme central to SPINE. 'Too often, organizations approach DEI as a checklist or a branding tool,' Henderson explains. 'But DEI is not the end goal. It is a strategic lens through which organizations must examine leadership commitment, performance, product and service development, culture, customer engagement, and community impact. When done right, it unlocks innovation, engagement, retention, and growth. When done performatively, it wastes resources and erodes trust.' The book also introduces Henderson's 7Cs Change Model: Consciousness, Conversation, Context, Content, Collaboration, Cadence, and Choice. It is a supplemental framework that guides organizations through the human dynamics of systemic transformation and leadership commitment. SPINE is especially relevant for HR professionals, organizational change agents, and executives seeking to unify purpose with practice, process, and outcomes. Henderson writes with the clarity of a seasoned advisor and the urgency of a social architect who understands that equity is a competitive necessity. 'I wrote this book for leaders asked to launch or adapt a DEI strategy, overwhelmed and uncertain, but determined to do it right. SPINE gives them a framework, a language, and the confidence to lead,' said Henderson. Whether one is just beginning their DEI journey or trying to steer an existing program through turbulent times, SPINE: The DEI Backbone for Agility and Adaptability in a VUCA World offers the strategic insight, tactical clarity, and moral courage needed to lead transformational change. Federal Way apartment complex sees two homicides this month

Angie Agostino was hard at work with her window open Thursday afternoon. Then, an unmistakable sound rang throughout her apartment complex. 'I was sure it was a gun,' Agostino said. She called 911, and her fear was confirmed as police arrived to find the body of a 20-year-old man. In between her call and their arrival, several things felt off to Angie. Agostino says she saw a man, who she believes would have been in eyesight of the body, casually saying that someone should call 911. 'He goes kind of, like, he was just talking to a friend, not like emergent,' Agostino said. Shortly after, a woman ran from where the body was. 'She was running like you would run if you were nervous or scared. I can't tell you how I know that, it's just a feeling I got,' Agostino said. Then, there were the vehicles that were driving by the body as well, especially a van that she said looked like a homemade ice cream truck. 'Now, am I noticing this because I'm heightened or because I've never heard an ice cream truck in this neighborhood? Plus, it's Thursday, it's not summer vacation, kids are in school or at daycare, I thought it was weird,' Agostino surmises. 'Between the ice cream truck and the white car, they would have seen the victim if the victim was there, one hundred percent.' She told police and detectives everything when they got on the scene. She couldn't make out the man's nor the woman's faces but described their build. It's the second homicide at the Cove Apartments in Federal Way this May, after a domestic dispute led to the death of another person earlier this month. In a phone call with KIRO 7, Federal Way Police say it's 'surprising' for calls to come at the apartment complex, saying, outside of those deaths, there are relatively few calls to the apartment complex. Weidner Apartment Homes, the parent company of the apartment complex, did not respond to several calls or emails requesting comment Friday. Angie says she has called the police on suspicious people in the last few months. She grew up in the area and says Federal Way has changed since then, adding, 'It just seems like there's a lot more violence just in this area.'
