Mexican authorities find 20 bodies in Sinaloa state
Twenty bodies, several of them decapitated, have been found on a highway bridge in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, Mexican authorities say, as rival drug cartel factions fight one another in the area. The Sinaloa state prosecutor's office reported a grisly scene on Monday: Four headless corpses were found on a roadside, 16 bodies were discovered inside an abandoned vehicle near the state capital, Culiacan, and five human heads were found inside a bag. Authorities said the bodies were left with a note, apparently from one of the cartel factions, although the note's contents were not immediately disclosed. Feliciano Castro, a Sinaloa government spokesperson, condemned the killings and said authorities need to examine their strategy for tackling organised crime due to the 'magnitude' of the violence seen. 'Military and police forces are working together to re-establish total peace in Sinaloa,' Castro said. Members of the public in the state, however, said authorities have lost control. Sinaloa has been gripped by months of violence fuelled by rival drug traffickers vying for control of routes used to produce and transport narcotics, including fentanyl, that are often destined for the United States. The groups are split between members loyal to Sinaloa Cartel cofounders Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman and Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada. The violence peaked after the arrest in July of Zambada, who is on trial in the US. The US announced it had arrested 76-year-old Zambada and 38-year-old Joaquin Guzman Lopez, 'El Chapo' Guzman's son, at an airport near El Paso, Texas. (Agencies)

20 bodies — including four hanging from bridge near plastic bag of human heads — found in Mexico
Twenty bodies were discovered — including four decapitated corpses hanging from a bridge near a plastic bag of human heads — after a bloody day of cartel violence in Mexico over the weekend. All 20 of the victims were male and had gunshot wounds, the Sinaloa State Attorney General's Office said. Five of the bodies were decapitated, with four of those corpses left strung up by their feet along a highway bridge near Culiacán, the largest city in Sinaloa state, authorities said. 4 Four decapitated bodies were found hanging by their feet from a bridge in Mexico over the weekend. The 15 other bodies, including the fifth missing his head, were discovered just yards away in a van. A plastic bag containing five human heads was found close to the bridge, officials said. The van was plastered with a banner referencing the ongoing wars between rival drug cartels in Sinaloa, authorities said. The victims were part of a total of 27 murders were reported in Sinaloa on Sunday, including a young man and two women in an armed attack in Culiacán. The recent upsurge in Mexican drug violence is blamed on clashes between the warring gangs 'Los Chapitos' and 'La Mayiza,' who are fighting over strategic drug trafficking routes in Sinaloa, security sources said. 4 A further 16 bodies were discovered in a nearby van in Culiacan in the state of Sinaloa. The kidnapped man was handed over to US authorities by way of a private plane. Since then, Culiacan, previously one of the more peaceful Mexican cities, has been torn apart by violence as the Sinaloa Cartel has lost control. Mexican authorities insist they are on top of the violence and are working to crack down on organized crime. 'Military and police forces are working together to reestablish total peace in Sinaloa,' said Feliciano Castro, a Sinaloa government spokesperson, in a statement Monday.

Bodies hang from bridge as Cartel violence leaves 20 dead in Mexico
The grim reality of Mexico's escalating cartel violence was underscored on Monday as four decapitated bodies were found hanging from a bridge in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state. This horrific discovery comes amidst a surge of bloodshed that has claimed nearly 20 lives in less than 24 hours, according to authorities. Culiacan has become the epicentre of a brutal power struggle between two factions of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel – Los Chapitos and La Mayiza. This internal conflict, which ignited last year, has plunged the city into a state of constant fear and violence. The city's streets bear daily witness to scattered corpses, homes riddled with bullets, and businesses forced to shutter their doors. Schools regularly close down during waves of violence, while masked young men on motorcycles are a constant, ominous presence, patrolling the main avenues. On Monday, Sinaloa state prosecutors said that four bodies were found dangling from the freeway bridge leading out of the city, their heads in a nearby plastic bag. On the same highway Monday, officials said they found 16 more male victims with gunshot wounds, packed into a white van, one of whom was decapitated. Authorities said the bodies were left with a note, apparently from one of the cartel factions, though the note's contents were not immediately disclosed. Feliciano Castro, Sinaloa government spokesperson, condemned the violent killings on Monday and said authorities needed to examine their strategy for tackling organized crime with the 'magnitude' of the violence seen. 'Military and police forces are working together to reestablish total peace in Sinaloa,' Castro said. Most in the western Mexico state, however, say authorities have lost control of the violence levels. A bloody power struggle erupted in September last year between two rival factions, pushing the city to a standstill. The war for territorial control was triggered by the dramatic kidnapping of the leader of one of the groups by a son of notorious capo Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán who then delivered him to U.S. authorities via a private plane. Since then, intense fighting between the heavily armed factions has become the new normal for civilians in Culiacan, a city which for years avoided the worst of Mexico 's violence in large part because the Sinaloa Cartel maintained such complete control.

Cartel Violence in Sinaloa, Mexico Leaves 20 Dead, Including 4 Decapitated Bodies
