Michael B. Jordan Reveals Career Advice From Denzel Washington
Michael B. Jordan has long admired Denzel Washington, and in a new interview, he revealed the advice he received from the veteran actor. Speaking with New York Magazine, the 38-year-old explained the lack of selfies on his social media feed at the Fences star's guidance. The Sinners actor detailed that he was once asked by Washington, 'Why would they pay to see you on a weekend if they see you all week for free?' and that the answer has shaped the way he guards himself on social media. He did, however, allow part of her personal life to be exposed to the public when dating Lori Harvey from 2020 through 2022. The New Jersey native revealed that featuring the model on his social media feed was done without intention. 'There was no real thought behind,' he detailed. 'At that moment, I was like, 'Ah, f**k it, whatever.'' That does not necessarily mean that intimate footage of Jordan's life does not exist. He continued to reveal to the publication that seven years ago, he hired a videographer to document his day-to-day life. 'The intent was me feeling like I don't take in the moments,' he explained. 'Because I'm always on the go, always working and grinding. One day I wanted to have something to reflect on outside of the memories in my head.' He continued to explain why the clips will likely never be consumed by the public, detailing his goal was to create a 'family archive' for his relatives such as nieces and nephews to explain 'why Uncle Mike is always gone' or show to his 'great-grandkids when I'm dead' to 'understand a bit of where they come from.' Denzel Washington Surprised With Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes
Denzel Washington was surprised at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night with an honorary Palme d'Or, a career achievement acknowledgement that has been presented only 21 previous times. Ahead of an out-of-competition screening of his latest film, Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, fest director Thierry Frémaux surprised the Oscar winner with the honor. Norwegian Berlinale Winner Dag Johan Haugerud Named Jury Head for Venice's Giornate Degli Autori Cannes: Wes Anderson Teases His Next Film Lee presented Washington with the honor after an introduction from Frémaux. The presentation saw Washington receive a huge standing ovation. 'This is a total surprise for me, so I'm emotional. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with my brother once again, brother from another mother, and to be here once again in Cannes,' Washington said in part, after Lee previously referred to Washington as his brother and expressed his love for . 'We're a very privileged group in this room that we get to make movies and wear tuxedos and nice clothes and dress up and get paid for it as well. We're just blessed beyond measure. I'm blessed beyond measure. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.' Highest 2 Lowest marks Washington and Lee's first film together in nearly 20 years and fifth collaboration overall. Washington is making a quick stop at Cannes in between performances of Othello on Broadway. The play, in which he stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, is dark on Mondays like most Broadway productions. An honorary Palme was presented on the opening night of this year's fest to Robert De Niro, but that was announced in advance, as have been all honorary Palme presentations since 2022, when Fremaux handed an unannounced one to Tom Cruise. Other previous recipients of Cannes' honorary Palme, which was first presented in 2002, include Catherine Deneuve, Jane Fonda, Clint Eastwood, Agnès Varda, Jodie Foster, Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas and, last year, Meryl Streep and George Lucas. Also last year, Studio Ghibli became the first organization, as opposed to individual, to receive the honor. Washington is a two-time Oscar winner, receiving the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in Glory and best actor for his work in Training Day. He also received an Oscar nomination for best picture for the film adaptation of Fences, which he also directed. Among other accolades, he's also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom and Tony Award, for the Broadway revival of Fences, though he recently missed out on a chance at another Tony as his latest production of Othello failed to receive any Tony nods. Cannes 2025: Denzel Washington presented surprise honourary Palme d'Or by Spike Lee
Denzel Washington was honoured with a surprise lifetime achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night, receiving an honorary Palme d'Or ahead of the screening of his latest film Highest 2 Lowest, directed by longtime collaborator Spike Lee. Festival director Thierry Frémaux introduced the award presentation, which caught Washington off guard. Lee, who has worked with Washington on five films, formally presented the honor. The audience responded with a standing ovation as Washington took the stage to accept the recognition. 'This is a total surprise for me, so I'm emotional,' Washington said during his remarks. 'It's a great opportunity to collaborate with my brother once again… From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.' The award marks a rare moment in the festival's history, as the honourary Palme d'Or has only been presented 22 times since its inception in 2002. While another honorary Palme was awarded earlier in the festival to Robert De Niro, that announcement had been made in advance. Washington's recognition was kept under wraps, making him only the second recipient in recent years to receive the award as a surprise, following Tom Cruise in 2022. Washington's appearance at Cannes comes during a break from his Broadway run in Othello, in which he stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Like most Broadway productions, the show is dark on Mondays, allowing him to attend the festival briefly. Washington is a two-time Academy Award winner, earning Best Supporting Actor for Glory and Best Actor for Training Day. He also received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture for Fences, which he directed and starred in. His accolades include a Tony Award for Fences on stage and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Highest 2 Lowest marks Washington and Lee's first film collaboration in nearly two decades. Their previous work together includes Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man. With this award, Washington joins an exclusive list of recipients that includes more names like Jane Fonda, Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, and Meryl Streep.

George Clooney recalls James Earl Jones pausing Fences over audience disruption
George Clooney recently shared a memorable and humorous moment involving the late theater legend James Earl Jones, recalling the time Jones paused a Broadway performance of Fences due to excessive audience chatter. The story surfaced during Variety's inaugural Broadway edition of 'Actors on Actors,' where Clooney spoke with Patti LuPone. The incident took place during a performance of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Fences, where James Earl Jones originated the role of Troy Maxson. Clooney explained he was seated next to two older audience members who were chatting throughout the show. During one of Jones' powerful soliloquies, the talking continued, prompting the veteran actor to break character and address the disruption directly. "James is just staring into the crowd, and I can tell he's looking right at me — though he couldn't quite see who was talking," Clooney recounted. "And then he goes, 'I don't appreciate that shit.' I was literally pointing at this old lady, like, 'It's not me, it's her!'' Jones' portrayal of Troy Maxson in the 1987 Broadway run earned him a Tony Award for Best Actor. The production went on to win multiple accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The role remains one of his most iconic stage performances. James Earl Jones passed away in September 2024 at the age of 93. A memorial held at the James Earl Jones Theatre in Manhattan earlier this month celebrated his life and career, with attendees including Denzel Washington, Phylicia Rashad, and Courtney B. Vance. Clooney's anecdote adds to the growing list of memorable celebrity encounters with live theater etiquette, echoing similar stories like LuPone's confrontation with a texting audience member during Shows for Days.
