V Penthouse by Badie Architects is a Raw Sanctuary

V Penthouse by Badie Architects is a Raw Sanctuary Located in the verdant neighbourhood of Maadi, the residence is designed as a deliberate balance between industrial rawness and artisanal precision. The V Penthouse by Cairo-based Badie Architects explores an architecture-first approach to contemporary living that prioritises material honesty and spatial coherence. Located in the verdant neighbourhood of Maadi, the residence is designed as a deliberate balance between industrial rawness and artisanal precision. It unfolds as a controlled study in contrast, where every surface, junction, and finish is calibrated to serve both form and function. At its core, the space is driven by clarity and cohesion. The fireplace acts as an architectural anchor at the heart of the living area, quietly organising the open plan without resorting to visual noise. Around it, the material palette is tightly controlled, privileging continuity. Self-leveling concrete across both floors and walls creates a seamless, monolithic skin that dissolves traditional thresholds and emphasises spatial fluidity. Steel cladding wraps structural volumes adding a sculptural quality, giving weight and permanence to the interior. Polished stainless steel doors and visible ducts double as both functional infrastructure and aesthetic statement, pushing the industrial character forward without overplaying it. To counterbalance these striking materials, raw wood elements are strategically integrated, bringing warmth, texture, and a natural contrast to the overall composition The V Penthouse integrates smart home technology with the same level of precision applied to its architecture. Lighting, climate, security, and entertainment systems are fully automated and controlled through a centralised interface, allowing the space to respond easily to its users. This digital layer is designed to be discreet to support the spatial experience without interrupting it. That balance between form, function, and future-thinking is core to the studio's approach. 'Every design decision within the V Penthouse reflects an uncompromising dedication to material authenticity, spatial clarity, and the future of avant-garde living,' lead architect Mohamed Badie explains. Every furnishing choice reinforces the architectural language beyond being solely ornamental. High-end pieces from Fendi, Minotti, Flos, and Cassina are curated to match the penthouse's material ethos, without detracting from the spatial narrative. In the bedroom, a full marble bathtub becomes the sculptural focal point, while a handpicked Kahhal Persian rug introduces texture, heritage, and a quiet nod to craftsmanship.

In Rome, the re-enchanted gardens of the Villa Medici

According to the director, Sam Stourdzé, whose term ends this summer and who is seeking reappointment, "the citrus trees are part of the 'Re-enchanting the Villa' project." He launched this ambitious program when he arrived in 2020, with the aim of refreshing the site. At the end of 2022, the salons – where fellows hold work meetings but also host receptions, concerts and lectures – were renovated under the artistic direction of Italian fashion house Fendi, with support from the Mobilier National, France's national furniture collections and workshops. In 2023, India Mahdavi reimagined six historic rooms, three of which are open to the villa's 140,000 annual visitors. In early June, amid Rome's sweltering heat, the results of the third chapter of this "re-enchantment" were unveiled: the opening of six guest rooms, known as "de la passerelle," created by designer-artisan duos following a call for entries; the lemon grove, designed by landscape architect Bas Smets in collaboration with chief architect of historic monuments Pierre-Antoine Gatier; and, facing the splendid façade lined with antiquities, the parterre garden, where 20 Tuscan pots containing rare citrus trees have been installed, born from a collaboration between Japanese ceramist Natsuko Uchino and French writer Laura Vazquez. Of course, the six new guest rooms inspire dreams, and it is a pleasure to admire the wall evoking Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato in a fresco reimagined by Studio GGSV, the beautiful sobriety of the design by Eliane Le Roux and Miza Mucciarelli, and Constance Guisset's ship's cabin. For each project, architects and designers worked closely with exceptional artisans, thanks to major support from the Bettencourt Schueller Fondation, which is particularly active in the field of craftsmanship.

Luxury designer handbags stolen in city centre ram raid

Buyers are warned to be on the lookout for suspiciously cheap designer handbags after a ram raid on a luxury store. Italian designer fashion retailer Fendi was the target of the attack in Sydney's city-centre early on Wednesday, when tens of thousands of dollars worth of items were stolen from the shopfront, police say. Chief Inspector Gary Coffey said a Lexus SUV, stolen on Monday night, was driven on to the pavement on Elizabeth St about 3:45am and smashed the shop window. "Three offenders got out of that that vehicle and entered the store. "They stole a number of luxury handbags and other items," Insp Coffey told reporters on Wednesday. Broken glass scattered across the footpath and empty shopfront displays greeted police and store employees when they arrived at the scene. The stolen Lexus used in the ram raid was left outside the store and the raiders fled in two other vehicles, a white BMW and a grey Audi, which were stolen on Tuesday night. The attackers wore hoods and gloves, making multiple trips into the store. But the car left behind has police hopeful of finding some forensic evidence to track them down. The ram raid appeared to have a degree of planning due to the number of people involved and the use of multiple stolen vehicles, Insp Coffey said. He warned people to be wary of online advertisements spruiking cheap handbags following the ram raid. "If people do see luxury handbags for sale on various platforms at prices that are below normal market value, those bags may well be stolen. "They probably want to get rid of their items as quickly as possible. "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is," Insp Coffey said. Sydney's ram raid comes a few months after five men were arrested over similar attacks in Victoria. Six luxury stores were targeted in a spree of Melbourne ram raids in March and April, with goods worth more than $1 million stolen.
