Fergus stays cool as Indonesian cauldron looms

KUALA LUMPUR: National Under-23 forward Fergus Tierney is staying cool over an expected hostile environment at the AFF Championship in Indonesia, next week. The Young Tigers kick off their Group A campaign against the Philippines on July 15 before facing Brunei (July 18) and hosts Indonesia (July 21). It was reported that the tickets for the Malaysia vs Indonesia match have been sold out, raising concern over safety. Malaysia's rivalry with Indonesia has been intense in recent times and during a World Cup qualifier in Jakarta on Sept 5, 2019, Malaysian fans were attacked by Indonesian fans. In 2019, the Malaysian Under-19 team were pelted with stones and bottles by Indonesian fans in the semi-final of the AFF Under-19 Cup in Sidoarjo. However, Tierney said he's excited to face the Indonesian team and the pressure will only make him perform better. "I hope I can get tickets for my family. We know how Indonesian fans are, they are very supportive of their team, so I'm excited to play in front of them," said the Sabah new-signing. Tierney said his team are shaping well for the AFF Under-23 Championship, and they recorded a 4-1 win over Super League side Melaka in a friendly match at the KLFA Stadium on Tuesday. The Glasgow-born Tierney scored a brace against Melaka.

Malaysia U-23 team eyes AFF Cup glory with Tierney's diamond mindset

NATIONAL forward Fergus Tierney summed up his approach to the upcoming 2025 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-23 Cup with a simple yet powerful phrase: 'Pressure creates diamonds.' The young striker, who has already earned caps at the senior level, remains unfazed by the high expectations as Malaysia prepares for the tournament in Jakarta from July 15 to 29. Under head coach Nafuzi Zain, the team has been refining its tactics and conditioning in the final stretch before the competition. Tierney expressed confidence in the squad's progress, stating, 'We are learning a lot every day. We still have a week to go before the tournament, so there's still a lot we need to improve.' His determination was evident in a recent warm-up match against Melaka FC, where he scored twice in a 4-1 victory at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras. Aliff Izwan Yuslan and Muhammad Faris Danish Mohd Asrul contributed the remaining goals, showcasing the team's attacking depth. Coach Nafuzi emphasized that fitness remains a top priority, noting improvements in speed and movement. However, he acknowledged the tougher challenges ahead, saying, 'We know the real challenge will be much tougher than our current situation.' With a clear target of reaching the semi-finals, Malaysia will open their Group A campaign against the Philippines on July 15, followed by matches against Brunei on July 18 and hosts Indonesia on July 21. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on July 25, with the final set for July 29. - Bernama

It's just like home

No time to waste: Fergus Tierney training with his new club Sabah. — Sabah FC PETALING JAYA: Football striker Fergus Tierney may be in a new city, but he feels right at home. The 22-year-old Tierney, who recently joined Sabah from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), says life in Kota Kinabalu reminded him a lot of Penang. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but was raised since young at the Pearl of the Orient. 'Kota Kinabalu is great so far, kind of reminds me of home in Penang,' said Fergus, whose father Martin Tierney was a former professional footballer with Penang and Police in the past. 'The people are friendly, the food's familiar, and there's this laid-back coastal vibe that makes it easy to settle in.' Standing at 1.86m, Fergus brings a versatile attacking profile to Martin Stano's side. Primarily a striker or second striker, he is also capable of operating from the flanks, a flexibility Sabah will surely welcome as they seek to build on a promising squad for the coming Super League season. Fergus had been part of the JDT set-up since 2022 but was sent out for valuable first-team experience in Thailand, featuring for Chonburi last year before a short stint at Nakhon Pathom United earlier this season. 'I had a great experience in Thailand playing good football in a good league, but now I'm excited for the project at Sabah and looking forward to the upcoming season,' he said. 'Sabah are building a promising team this year, and I feel like I can contribute positively on the pitch and hopefully have a great season.' Having earned six caps and scored a goal for Malaysia, the young forward is still hungry to improve. And in Sabah, competition upfront would be feisty as they have hired some top-quality attackers such as Darren Lok, Azhad Harraz Arman and Bosnian Ajden Mujagic. 'Competition here is healthy, and I want to learn from the more senior players and coaches to become a better player,' he added. As Sabah aim to climb the table with renewed attacking firepower, Tierney's energy and enthusiasm, both on and off the pitch, could be the spark they need.
