It had been spotted several times cruising through the city, drawing attention from both car enthusiasts and enforcement agencies. Acting on a tip-off, officials from the Bengaluru South Regional Transport Office (RTO) tracked down the vehicle and verified its registration and tax status. Upon confirmation that the required Karnataka road tax had not been paid, the Ferrari was seized and a notice was issued to the owner, directing them to clear the dues by Thursday evening. The notice also cautioned that failure to comply would lead to legal action. ₹ 1.41 crore pending tax recovered from car owner The owner promptly responded to the warning and made a payment of ₹1,41,59,041, covering the pending tax and associated penalties. In February, authorities had seized 30 luxury vehicles in Bengaluru for similar violations, namely, using out-of-state registrations to avoid paying Karnataka's road tax. Transport officials have been closely monitoring gatherings of luxury and exotic car owners, especially during weekend drives, where vehicles with non-Karnataka registration plates are often spotted. These gatherings have helped enforcement teams identify several tax evaders. Officials reiterated that under Karnataka Motor Vehicle laws, any vehicle used regularly in the state must be re-registered locally and pay the applicable road tax, regardless of its state of origin.

Ferrari worth Rs 7.5 crore seized in Bengaluru for road tax evasion; owner pays Rs 1.41 crore to RTO

A red Ferrari SF90 Stradale, one of the most exotic cars to hit Bengaluru streets in recent times, was seized by transport officials on Thursday for dodging road tax in Karnataka, according to a report by NDTV. The supercar, which comes with a starting price tag of Rs 7.5 crore, is registered in Maharashtra, a state where road taxes on luxury vehicles are significantly lower than in Karnataka. Though the Ferrari had become a familiar sight among car lovers in the city, the owner never got around to re-registering it locally or paying the required state road tax. Following a tip-off, officials from the Bengaluru South RTO launched an investigation. They tracked down the vehicle, verified its documents, and found that the car had been operating in the state without fulfilling the mandatory tax requirements. Once the violation was confirmed, the authorities seized the Ferrari and issued a notice to the owner, instructing them to settle the dues by Thursday evening. The notice came with a stern warning: failure to pay would result in legal consequences. The owner responded quickly and paid Rs 1.41 crore, a sum that includes the pending tax and penalties. Officials from the transport department noted that this payment is among the biggest single-vehicle tax recoveries in recent memory. The seizure is part of a wider crackdown by the Karnataka transport department, which has been going after high-end cars evading local taxes. Earlier this year, in February, the department confiscated 30 luxury vehicles–Ferraris, Porsches, Audis, BMWs, Aston Martins, and Range Rovers–for similar violations. Over 40 RTO officers had been involved in that large-scale operation. As per Karnataka's motor vehicle laws, any vehicle that is used regularly in the state must be re-registered and the applicable road tax must be paid–regardless of where it was originally registered. The law is clear: if a vehicle is based in the state for over a year, it must contribute its share toward maintaining local infrastructure. Officials say such enforcement is necessary to ensure fairness and accountability.

Ferrari hits traffic bump in Bengaluru, pays ₹1.4 cr after tax-free ride

In a major action against tax evasion, Bengaluru's Regional Transport Office (RTO) forced the owner of a red Ferrari SF90 Stradale to pay over ₹1.41 crore in pending road tax and penalties. The car had been driving through the city for months without paying road tax in Karnataka, NDTV reported. The Ferrari, with a starting price of ₹7.5 crore, was registered in Maharashtra and had become a familiar sight in Bengaluru. On Thursday morning, officials from the Bengaluru South RTO spotted the Ferrari near Lalbagh. Suspecting a tax violation, they stopped the car and checked its documents. 'In Maharashtra, tax on such cars is a flat ₹20 lakh, but in Karnataka, it amounts to nearly ₹1.5 crore. The vehicle was registered in Maharashtra two years ago. Around 8.30 am on Thursday, the driver was cruising near Lalbagh. When we stopped the car and asked for documents, he said they were at home. Later, we verified the registration,' an official said, as quoted by The Times of India. Owner given a deadline, pays up in full After checking records, the RTO found that the car had been used in Bengaluru for more than 18 months without paying local road tax. The vehicle was seized, and a formal notice was issued to the owner. The notice also warned of legal action if the dues were not cleared by the evening. Responding quickly, the owner paid a total of ₹1,41,59,041, which included both the tax and penalties. One of the biggest recoveries in recent times Officials said this was one of the highest single-vehicle tax recoveries in recent years. The transport department added that it will continue to take strict action against luxury vehicles being driven without paying state road tax, NDTV reported. Earlier in February, the department had seized 30 high-end cars, including Ferraris, Porsches, BMWs, Audis, Aston Martins and Range Rovers, during a large-scale crackdown on tax evasion. The operation involved over 40 RTO officers.
