Caitlin Clark's Former Indiana Fever Teammate Makes WNBA History
Caitlin Clark's Former Indiana Fever Teammate Makes WNBA History originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever made some big moves in the offseason to surround Caitlin Clark with the best possible roster for her sophomore season. Advertisement As the Fever added some new personnel, a number of old faces also left the squad during the offseason. This included veteran center Temi Fagbenle, who parted ways with Indiana after just one season with the team. Fagbenle, who was a strong supporter of Clark's Rookie of the Year campaign last season, was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the expansion draft after she was left out of Indiana's protected players list. On Monday, Fagbenle helped her new team secure their second straight win, as the Valkyries pulled off an impressive 89-81 overtime road victory over the Los Angeles Sparks at Arena. Golden State Valkyries center Temi Fagbenle during a preseason game against the Phoenix J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Fagbenle arguably had her best game in a Valkyries uniform, dropping a 14-point, 13-rebound (eight of which were on the offensive end) double-double, with four steals and four blocks. It was an incredible all-around effort from the 32-year-old, and it allowed her to make her mark on the WNBA history books. Advertisement According to StatMuse on X, Fagbenle is the first player in league history to record at least eight offensive rebounds, four steals and four blocks in a single game. Fagbenle's stat-stuffing effort helped lead Golden State to a win against the Sparks, which saw the Valkyries improve to 4-5 on the season. They are now eighth in the league, and could all of a sudden become a real threat for a postseason berth in their first WNBA season. As for Fagbenle, the former Harvard and USC star has been a crucial piece for the Valkyries this season. In nine starts, Fagbenle has put up averages of 9.7 points on 53.7% shooting, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks in 25.7 minutes per contest. Angel Reese joins Serena Williams on the short list of athletes with this award
The post Angel Reese joins Serena Williams on the short list of athletes with this award appeared first on ClutchPoints. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese keeps making history. The second-year All-Star was named BET Sportswoman of the Year for the third year in a row, joining Serena Williams as the only athletes to ever win the award three times. Reese was nominated alongside A'ja Wilson, Claressa Shields, Coco Gauff, Dawn Staley, Flau'jae Johnson, Juju Watkins, Sha'Carri Richardson and Simone Biles. Advertisement Reese's Sky are just 2-5 to start the season, but the post player out of LSU is averaging 9.1 points and a team-high 12.3 rebounds per game. As a rookie, she surpassed the previous WNBA record for rebounds in a season (Wilson did as well in 2024, even besting Reese by five boards). Now, Reese has drawn a Dennis Rodman comparison from former NBA guard Jeff Teague. 'I'm saying her whole overall game is Dennis Rodman,' Teague said in an appearance Monday on the Club 520 podcast. 'Her whole brand, everything. Dennis Rodman was the biggest player off the court. He was a f—-ing star and he was a menace on defense and rebounding. She is the Dennis Rodman of the WNBA.' The last two times Reese earned Sportswoman of the Year honors, she ended her season with major accomplishments — the rebounding record last year and a national championship with the Tigers the year before. This time, she will have to do more than she has done through seven games to live up to the award. Though she's a nightly double-double threat, her efficiency has taken another step back in 2025. She's shooting only 31 percent from the field and her Sky are about to face a New York Liberty team that held her to an 0-8 night earlier in the season. But Reese said it herself — she just has to keep working. Advertisement 'Everybody's been underground at one point. Everybody's been through something at one point,' she told the media after the team's most recent loss. 'So I think we just come together with that chip on our shoulders. I think everybody just comes to work every day and that's just something that we're feeling.' Chicago Sky Coach Responds to Angel Reese's Comments About Him After Blowout Loss
Chicago Sky Coach Responds to Angel Reese's Comments About Him After Blowout Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky suffered their second straight blowout loss on Tuesday night. After a 79-52 defeat at the hands of their biggest rivals, the Indiana Fever, on Saturday, Chicago got itself blown out again on Tuesday, 85-66, courtesy of the defending champions, the New York Liberty. Advertisement Angel Reese stepped it up for her team in this one, logging another double-double with 17 points (on 8-of-13 shooting) and 11 rebounds, to go along with three assists, two steals and one 3-pointer. Despite Reese's strong effort, however, the Sky still lost big, as they fell to 2-6 on the season. Reese spoke to reporters after the game, and one of the questions she faced was about first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. "We have to give Tyler grace because he's a rookie coach, too," Reese said, via Sky reporter Karli Bell. "He's the head coach, but it's us on the floor. "We have to look ourselves in the mirror and be patient with ourselves and continue to just grind. We don't point the finger." Advertisement Reese clearly does not want to assign blame following Chicago's disappointing loss, and she certainly refuses to throw her coach under the bus. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) during a Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Marsh caught wind of the All-Star forward's postgame comments, and he responded by showing his gratitude to Reese. "I appreciate those comments from Angel," he said. "Our players are the ones who deserve the grace. "I know what comes with the territory of being a head coach. I accept that for better or for worse." Despite being a rookie coach, Marsh has made it clear that he is well aware of the negatives that come with his job. This includes taking criticism amid his team's poor start to the season. Chicago will continue to fall out of the playoff race if it doesn't get its act together soon, and Marsh will likely get the short end of the stick when that happens. Advertisement It's good to know that Marsh has the unwavering support of Reese, but as he said, he's ready to face the consequences of his team's struggles should they come. Caitlin Clark Post Triggers Negative Reactions After Paige Bueckers' Historic Game
Caitlin Clark Post Triggers Negative Reactions After Paige Bueckers' Historic Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Paige Bueckers made up for lost time on Wednesday night. After a four-game injury absence, the highly touted rookie made her much-anticipated return to action for the Dallas Wings in their game against the Phoenix Mercury. Advertisement Bueckers made all sorts of waves in her return as she went off for a career-high 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting, six rebounds, four assists, a steal, a block and five triples in 37 minutes of action. The former UConn star made history in this one by becoming just the second rookie to ever register at least 35 points and five triples in a single game. The only other player to have achieved that same mark was Caitlin Clark during her debut campaign with the Indiana Fever last season. In this light, a post made by Polymarket Hoops on X has drawn some criticism on social media. The said post emphasized the fact that to this day, Clark holds the record as the only rookie to amass at least 35 points, five assists and five triples in a game. Clark wasn't even playing on Wednesday night — she was cheering for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals — which is why the timing of the post did not sit well with more than a few fans on X. Advertisement "Someone seems threatened," a comment read. "The timing oh yall are scrambling," said another. "Paige got the CC media machine in shambles LMAOOOOO," accused a fan. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers (5) reacts against the Phoenix Mercury in the first J. Rebilas-Imagn Images "😂😂😂😂😂 of course after Paige drop 35," a reaction read. "paige scared yall huh 😭" another said. "Yall threatened? 😂" asked a user. The Clark vs. Bueckers narrative is clearly alive and well. The comparisons, though, are not surprising at all, considering how these are two of the top young stars in the WNBA today. The bad news for Bueckers is that despite her historic performance, Dallas still suffered its sixth straight loss, as the Mercury secured a 93-80 home win at PHX Arena. Advertisement The Wings are now 1-10 on the season, and even though Bueckers has had a strong start to her WNBA career, things are looking grim in Dallas right now. Aliyah Boston Sends Two-Word Message to Fever Star After WNBA Announcement
Aliyah Boston Sends Two-Word Message to Fever Star After WNBA Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever got some good news ahead of their road game against the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday. The Fever are looking to make it three straight wins as they continue to navigate the season with Caitlin Clark still sidelined with a quad injury. Advertisement The rest of the squad has had ot step up with their best player sidelined, but there has been no bigger player over the past week than two-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell. The 5-foot-8 guard led Indiana to back-to-back wins over the Washington Mystics and the Chicago Sky with averages of 20.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. On Tuesday, the WNBA announced that Mitchell has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell was named Eastern Conference Player of the Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Fever star Aliyah Boston caught wind of the big news and flexed her teammate's milestone. Boston took to Instagram to send a two-word message on Mitchell's Player of the Week win. Advertisement "so deserving," Boston wrote. Boston has also had to step her game up in Clark's absence, and she, too, has been pivotal to Indiana's recent success. However, there's no denying that it has been Mitchell who has led the charge for the Fever's shorthanded backcourt. Indiana will need more of the same from Mitchell, Boston and the rest of the squad on Tuesday as they take on the Dream in Atlanta. The Dream are currently third in the WNBA with a 5-3 record and are looking to bounce back following their 84-76 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Friday. The Fever, however, have momentum on their side, and they are out to prove that they can keep their winning streak alive despite one of their star players sidelined.
