New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields carted off with toe injury at camp
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted from the practice field Thursday morning with a toe injury. Fields threw an incomplete pass to Jeremy Ruckert on his fifth play of team drills when he went down. The quarterback, in his first season with the Jets, sat on the grass for a few moments before getting up and limping to the sideline while helped by a trainer. Coach Aaron Glenn said the injury was to Fields' right foot, but had no immediate information on the nature or severity. 'I know it was a quick throw, so I'm assuming someone stepped on his toe,' Glenn said after the Jets' second practice of training camp. 'It had to be because of the nature of the call that we had as far as offensive play call. I want to look at the tape and be sure.' Fields spent a few minutes in the injury tent on the sideline as trainers examined him before a cart came out to transport him into the facility. Fields sat in the passenger seat next to the driver in the cart and then got up under his own power before stepping inside to be further evaluated. Glenn stopped the team period after Fields was hurt and the Jets ran special teams drills. 'When anybody goes down, there's a lump in my throat,' Glenn said. 'Listen, I hate injuries for any player, but the thing is I want to make sure that I understand exactly what the injury is before I move forward on my thought process.' Fields signed a two-year, $40m contract as a free agent in March after playing last season in Pittsburgh and is expected to be New York's starter this season. Veteran Tyrod Taylor, the team's oldest player who turns 36 next month, is the backup and replaced Fields in team drills. 'I think the most important part is, if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play calls,' Glenn said. 'Very similar when you talk about skill set, so that was like enticing for us. And then the leadership ability ... you could just tell the players really gravitate to him. When he says something, everybody really listens, even the coaching staff. He's been around this league a long time. He knows what it takes to win, and he's a really good person. So, we're all excited to have that guy here. 'Listen, Justin is who he is and if something happens to him, we've got Tyrod and we're ready to go.' New York also has Adrian Martinez, the 2024 United Football League MVP, and rookie Brady Cook on its roster, but neither has thrown a pass in an NFL game. Glenn noted that Martinez was in camp with the Lions in 2023, so he has some familiarity with the offense that the Jets are running with Tanner Engstrand, Detroit's former passing game coordinator. But if Fields is sidelined for a significant amount of time, the Jets could be in the market for an experienced quarterback. The news of Fields' injury sent Jets fans into a frenzy on social media, with many recalling how Aaron Rodgers' torn achilles tendon in the team's opening game in 2023 sunk their Super Bowl hopes and how Zach Wilson missed time early in the 2022 season with a knee injury. Glenn urged fans to remain calm because 'I've been there and done that' – referring to how he adjusted to various injuries in Detroit last season as the Lions' defensive coordinator – and it's still early in training camp. 'I understand how this league is and I understand how social media starts to take over and everybody starts to panic,' Glenn said. 'The one thing I would say is, listen, we have a number of men in that locker room that want to win. And we have a number of men in the locker room that's learning how to win and it's my job to make sure that I push that over the edge. And that's my plan.'

2025 NFL free agency: Best remaining NFL free agent QBs
Training camps are underway across the NFL, and things are off to a turbulent start for the New York Jets. Jets quarterback Justin Fields had to be carted back to the locker room Thursday, July 24. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields suffered a toe injury but the severity of is yet to be determined. Fields was one of the key free agent signings this offseason, introducing a new quarterback under the team's new regime. If he were to miss time, New York could look to add another passer via free agency. Quarterbacks Sam Darnold, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are some of the most notable signal-callers to sign in free agency but who remains available as the season approaches? Here are the best available NFL free agent quarterbacks: Best available free agent quarterbacks Wentz was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs last season and is still looking for a team for 2025. He could be a good fit for New York as he approaches his 10th season in the NFL. He has diverse experience as a former top draft pick (second overall), backup and MVP candidate. He could be a valuable addition to any roster in need of a solid backup. Bridgewater has turned into a bit of a journeyman, playing for six NFL teams but has not thrown a pass in the NFL since 2022. Huntley is arguably the most intriguing option available with the most recent on-field success. He played his first three seasons with the Ravens and earned a Pro Bowl nod during 2022 while Lamar Jackson was injured. Huntley most recently suited up for the Miami Dolphins in 2024, with whom he started five games and compiled a 2-3 record.

Jets QB options: Kirk Cousins, Carson Wentz among choices after Justin Fields injury
Playing quarterback for the New York Jets isn't for the faint of heart. Justin Fields learned that the hard way on Thursday morning. The quarterback was carted off the field during the team's second practice of training camp, which head coach Aaron Glenn later revealed to be a toe injury. Glenn didn't know the severity of the issue, so it's unclear how much time Fields will miss – if any. While Jets fans can seemingly breathe a sigh of relief for now, it's the unfortunate reminder of just how fragile an NFL season can be. It's been over seven months since the Jets played a football game that counted in the standings and the next season could've ended in the blink of an eye with a bad injury to the wrong player. In our fast-paced world, people will undoubtedly wonder what comes next. Whether Fields has to miss time or not, it's important to evaluate the options that are available if the quarterback will be forced out of action for any length of time. Jets QB options Taylor is the logical, and probably best, choice to step in for Fields. He has plenty of starting experience and signed to be the Jets' backup ahead of the 2024 season. As the clear QB2 on the depth chart, Taylor should get the first crack at the job. Behind Taylor on the depth chart are unproven players Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook. Martinez has only spent time in the NFL as a camp body and practice squad passer. Cook was signed as an undrafted free agent this offseason. There could be some bad blood between Cousins and the Jets, even though the old front office and coaching staff are no longer employed by the team. It's unclear whether they would actually pursue this option, but Cousins is the best quarterback that could be available via trade. There's a lot of money on the table for the guy that just signed with the Atlanta Falcons last offseason, however, and pressing this button may be a bit premature. The best of the free agent quarterback options, Wentz is far removed from his days of being an MVP candidate with the Philadelphia Eagles. While he didn't play in the New York market, he is familiar with the region thanks to his time with the Birds and comes with plenty of starting experience. Serving as the backup for Patrick Mahomes in 2024 is an added bonus and maybe he can recapture the magic that made him a tantalizing talent early in his career. Conventional wisdom suggests that the Jets and Giants wouldn't make a trade given their status as roommates. However, these teams have done business before as the Jets dealt Leonard Williams to the Giants in 2019. Winston is already relegated to a backup role behind Russell Wilson for Big Blue and Jaxson Dart is waiting in the wings. The Giants could benefit from cleaning up their quarterback room and Winston is someone that has played plenty of football over the years. It's a move that would make sense for both sides. 4 Jets QB options if Justin Fields misses time due to injury
The cart is now out for Jets QB Justin positioned behind a tree, so again, it's hard to see what's happening. But that's not a good sign. Disaster may have struck the New York Jets. Again. The franchise made a common sense, low risk investment to put the putrid Aaron Rodgers era in its rear view this offseason. The 41-year-old, four-time NFL MVP -- fresh off a five-win season -- was jettisoned along with head coach Robert Saleh and interim head coach Jeff Ulbricht. In their places came quarterback Justin Fields and former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. The message was clear. A defensive mind like Glenn could rebuild a once-proud defense. Fields signed a modest two-year, $40 million contract to be caretaker of the offense for at least the 2025 season. If he could display the cautious decision making and defense-grating runs that led to a career-low interception rate last season and a 4-2 record with the Pittsburgh Steelers, his Jets could grind their way into playoff contention. They may be forced to reconsider that plan. Fields was carted off the practice field Thursday, days into the team's preseason-opening training camp. The culprit was a toe injury. While there's no broken bone, the Jets will wait for the results of an MRI to see if they'll have their presumptive starter ready to go as the 2025 NFL regular season looms. Jets QB Justin Fields has a toe injury, according to head coach Aaron his update: So what happens if Fields is out for an extended period? Here are four feasible choices. Option 1: Roll with Tyrod Taylor Taylor signed in 2024 to be a veteran presence who could take the reins in small doses. The soon-to-be 36-year-old was a 2015 Pro Bowler with the Buffalo Bills but has started only 15 games over the last seven seasons. That includes a stretch with the New York Giants where he was set to take over for another rehabilitated former first round quarterback (Daniel Jones) only to wind up injured himself, thus making Tommy DeVito a meme. Taylor is largely inoffensive as a quarterback. His time as a Bill pegged him as a passer who avoids mistakes, though his 2.3 percent interception rate in the years since is slightly higher than league average. He can still complete deep throws -- he's 20 of 59 on tosses that cover at least 20 air yards since leaving Buffalo -- but that's not his game. He's also not the kind of scrambler he was at his Pro Bowl peak. His 5.9 yards per scramble as a Giant in 2023 were well below the league average of 7.2 (though, in fairness, the New York offensive line STUNK). Option 2: Trade for Kirk Cousins How badly do the Jets want to win in 2025? Would they be willing to supplant a 35-year-old backup quarterback with a 36-year-old one at a significant cost? That's the risk of dealing for Cousins, a player set to make a guaranteed $27.5 million this season as Michael Penix Jr.'s understudy in Atlanta. Cousins hobbled through his least efficient season since 2018 last fall before getting replaced behind center. His 16 interceptions were a career high and throws to the middle of the field appeared slower and were more susceptible to being tipped or picked. An extra season of recovery could restore his confidence in that plant foot and get him back to winging passes downfield. It would be a costly risk, but a reasonable one for a player whose 2023 pre-injury numbers painted him into the MVP discussion. However, the transition from Fields, who has averaged more than 50 rushing yards per game as a pro to Cousins, who wasn't especially mobile *before* tearing his Achilles in his mid-30s, would be jarring. Option 3: Sign Tyler Huntley Huntley is arguably the highest profile quarterback still unsigned as training camps open (assuming Teddy Bridgewater won't return to the league until high school football season is over, if at all). The last we saw, he went 2-3 in relief of Tua Tagovailoa with the Miami Dolphins. He has some familiarity with the AFC East. While he's not the runner Fields is he's averaged 4.6 yards per carry and 7.2 yards per scramble across his NFL career (he was also a 2022 Pro Bowler. The Pro Bowl designation is meaningless for quarterbacks). The problem, unfortunately, is the 27-year-old has shown few signs of being able to outgrow his QB2/3 status. Per SIS, he's completed only 18 percent of his deep throws in the NFL and had a single such completion last fall despite throwing to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Since 2020, 60 NFL quarterbacks have taken at least 500 snaps. Huntley's -0.044 expected points added (EPA) per play ranks 53rd among them, between Cooper Rush and Desmond Ridder. Option 4: Wait until cutdown day and sort through the chaff Teams across the league will make cuts as they prep their final 53-man rosters, hoping veteran talent slides through the cracks so it can be added to the practice squad days later. There will be a marketplace for young and experience quarterbacks alike. It will all be guys who could not crack the top two on their depth charts this summer. Will the New York Giants stick with Jameis Winston if Jaxson Dart establishes himself as the team's second-best quarterback in training camp? Could Jalen Milroe push Drew Lock out in Seattle? Mike White is probably available, right? The Cleveland Browns (probably!) won't keep four quarterbacks; could a reunion with Joe Flacco or a roll of the dice on Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders be worthwhile? None of these options are great. Hopefully, it won't even come to that. But if the Jets need to dig and find a season-long boost to their quarterback depth chart, they could wind up finding... well, not a gem really, but maybe a few good chunks of coal that can keep the lights burning until 2026.
