Scottie Scheffler, the standard for Texas men's golf and who will soon serve up 'Scheff's Kitchen'

Before Scottie Scheffler was a four-time major champion. Before he was a major champion at all. Before he even captured a PGA Tour title. Scheffler was locked in a battle with Billy Horschel in the final of the 2021 WGC-Dell Match Play. The 24-year-old Scheffler's bid for, at the time, his maiden Tour victory ended on Austin Country Club's 17th hole, where Texas head coach John Fields and his wife, Pearl, were waiting for the former Longhorn standout as he walked off the green. Scheffler gave both a hug, then turned toward a golf cart, where Scheffler's wife, Meredith, was already sitting on the back seat. Prior to Scheffler hopping on, however, a group of about 25 kids had arrived with their hands full of flags, hats and other things they were hoping to get signed. Not hesitating, Scheffler obliged. 'He signed whatever they asked for, took a few selfies,' Fields recalled, 'and then when he finally got in the golf cart, he put his face in his hands, and he just exploded crying because he was so mad he had just lost the match, and yet, he didn't let those kids see that.' Fields can count on one hand the number of players he's coached who are as competitive as Scheffler. The difference between Scheffler and everyone else is Scheffler's extraordinary ability to channel that fire, to let it burn but not burn the house down – better than anybody, too. It wasn't always that way, though it certainly seems as if it was. 'He's found a way to be very professional, but he also really enjoys people,' Fields added. At the start of each season, Fields sits his teams down and tries to instill in them the Texas way. Simple things, such as taking your hat off when indoors, or looking people directly in the eyes when shaking their hands while making them feel like they are the most important person in the room. For years, Fields would use Jack Nicklaus as the gold standard for compartmentalizing golf and other aspects of life, being where your feet are, and finding success in the moment. You know, all the things that make one great. Scheffler is the new standard. While Scheffler now owns three of the four legs to the career Grand Slam, 17 PGA Tour titles and loads of comparisons to the likes of Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Ben Hogan, he might be lauded more for his titles of husband, father, son and friend. Scheffler's priorities, he repeated Sunday evening at Royal Portrush, are faith, family and golf, in that order. As much as Scheffler loves golf, and competing, he'd quit it all tomorrow, he says, if it started to negatively affect those first two tenets. As hard as it can be sometimes, Scheffler strives to live as normal a life off the course as possible. When he got too recognizable at his usual Chipotle north of Dallas, he started driving a little farther to another location, where he wouldn't get recognized as much. When Scheffler returned to Austin last fall for Texas' alumni pro-am, Fields called one of his players, Dallas native Ben DeLaRosa, off the golf so that DeLaRosa could assist Scheffler with what would surely be extreme demands for his time – Fields argues now that Scheffler has 'moved a little bit past' fellow Longhorn great and major champ Jordan Spieth, and many of the Texas faithful certainly feel that way as well. Not that the cerebral Scheffler needed much help; upon arriving at the course, he cleverly draped his Olympic gold medal around Pearl Fields' neck. 'That helped him because he knew everyone wanted to see that gold medal … and Pearl got to be an Olympian for the day,' John Fields said. 'He just finds fun ways to enjoy that moment but not be too overwhelmed by it, and he's really good about it.' While Scheffler is undoubtedly a role model for whomever comes through the Texas men's golf program these days, his impact will soon go beyond that. Fields revealed Monday afternoon that the Schefflers are funding a renovation of the Longhorns' practice facility at UT Golf Club. A few years ago, Jordan Spieth helped design and back the construction of the Spieth Lower 40, a six-hole short course at the club. Another Texas alum, Tom Kite, recently redid the team's chipping area. Now, future Longhorns – hopefully by next summer – will be able to cut their teeth on a new, state-of-the-art practice range. The name of it? Scheff's Kitchen, which is always serving.

Notre Dame football offers top-50 2027 Mississippi defensive end

There isn't much room left in Notre Dame football's 2026 recruiting class, with twenty-six commitments, they can start to look ahead to the 2027 cycle. They already have two commits, just one being a position player, but the Irish have sent out plenty of offers to some of the best prospects in the country. One of them was offered on Saturday evening in Mississippi edge rusher Derwin Fields. The 6-foot, 5-inch and 220-pounder is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the nation's No. 45 overall prospect, just outside the 5-star range. Notre Dame now joins teams like Alabama, Florida, LSU, Florida State and others in offering Fields, who should end up being able to play virtually anywhere he'd like. It does look like its going to be tough to pull him away from SEC-country, but the Irish have put their hat in the ring. If Fields is able to make it up to South Bend during the season, it would be a great sign for Notre Dame to continue to be in the mix for his commitment. Time will tell if that happens, but for now, the Irish are clearly interested in him joining their 2027 class. Jets' Latest Prediction Would See Justin Fields Quickly Replaced

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Jets made the decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason. To replace him, the team went out in NFL free agency and signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract. Fields put together a solid season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. At the beginning of the year when starting in place of Russell Wilson, he performed well and had the team playing at a high level and winning. Heading into the 2025 season, Fields is looking to get his NFL career back on track. He's looking to prove that he can be a legitimate franchise quarterback. Read more: Browns' Shedeur Sanders Receives Potential Date for First Career Start Last season with the Steelers, Fields played in 10 total games. He started in six of those games, completing 65.8 percent of his pass attempts for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Fields also picked up 289 yards and scored five more touchdowns on the ground. Depending on how the upcoming campaign goes, the team could look into other quarterback options. Keeping that in mind, a new prediction has been made that would see New York replace Fields quickly. Mark Stolte of Pro Football Network released an intriguing mock draft. He had the Jets taking Penn State standout quarterback Drew Allar with the No. 5 overall pick. "Through all of his faults, he has a strong arm and the ideal size. He is comfortable managing a pocket and ranked 22nd in EPA per dropback on play-action throws — something the Jets need to lean heavily on with such a talented running back in Breece Hall," Stolte wrote. "While he wouldn't provide the Jets with much mobility, them taking fifth means Justin Fields didn't work out so it makes sense for them to go in the opposite direction." Read more: Raiders' Ashton Jeanty Lands Eye-Popping Endorsement Allar led the Nittany Lions on a deep run in the College Football Playoff last season. He threw for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, while completing 66.5 percent of his passes. It's too early to know what the 2025 season will have in store for New York and Fields. However, if he doesn't clearly show that he's a franchise caliber quarterback, the Jets moving on and taking a quarterback high in the 2026 NFL Draft would make a lot of sense. ESPN ranks former Ohio State stars C.J. Stroud, Justin Fields in its fantasy QB rankings

It's almost time for the great game of American football once again, and with that, it means we'll be able to watch the college game and at the game's highest level, the NFL. And if we're talking NFL, for many, that means it's also time to shuck aside household chores and other life responsibilities to obsess over fantasy football again. There are sure to be many fantasy football drafts either having already taken place or soon to be, so we thought we'd help you out just a little bit if you wanted to keep track of where some of the former Ohio State football players are ranked when it comes to the "worldwide leader," ESPN. If you've followed the NFL over the last few years, you no doubt know that there's really only two former Ohio State quarterbacks who expect to be starters this year and worth drafting, and that of course is Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and Jets new starter through free agency, Justin Fields. But where does ESPN see the value between the two? Stroud had a fantastic rookie season and was gobbled up by most deeper fantasy leagues last year, but then he had a bit of a sophomore slump this past year, mainly because of some issues with Houston's offense that caused him to have to shoulder a lot of the load. Fields, on the other hand, wasn't much of a play last year because he backed up Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh, but he did enough in spelling the former All-Pro when he was injured to convince the Jets to sign him to a deal to be the starter in the Big Apple this season, and that means something. In fact, Fields is actually rated higher in fantasy value than Stroud when it comes to what ESPN thinks. Fields is ranked as the No. 13 quarterback, while Stroud (the more proven of the two) checks in at No. 18. So what does that mean for you? You can take the upside and potential of what Fields could be this year, or you can be safe and go with Stroud if you fantasy league is deep enough. On the other hand, if you only have a dozen or fewer teams in your league, maybe you should keep an eye on how things start and make a play as a backup option based on how they look. You are safer and more likely to pick proven guys like Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Patrick Mahomes. By the way, the top ten fantasy draft quarterbacks for your consideration according to ESPN are: For the rest of the quarterback fantasy football draft rankings, visit ESPN's website and get prepped for fantasy football world domination. 2025 Fantasy Football QB Sleepers Include Justin Fields And Dak Prescott

NFL teams don't win Super Bowls without at least quality starters behind center. Quarterback isn't the most important position in fantasy football, but the same is still true -- championships don't come without production behind center. Unlike in real life football, though, championship fantasy football teams are more often built on the back of finding a quarterback in the later rounds. Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow offer the best options at quarterback for fantasy managers in 2025. But managers won't be able to land those signal-callers if they emphasize running backs and wide receivers early in the draft. Instead, they'll have to find a sleeper behind center. Based on their current Fantasy Pros ADP, here are four quarterbacks who are sleeper candidates entering NFL training camp. Expectations have always been high around Fields. They arguably are again entering this season, as Fields finds himself ranked as a top 12 quarterback according to Fantasy Pros. But I wanted to give fantasy managers in eight-team leagues a potential sleeper quarterback. Behind his electric running ability, Fields has the potential to out-produce Denver Broncos' Bo Nix, Arizona Cardinals Kyler Murray and San Francisco 49ers' Brock Purdy. That'd make him a top eight QB. Fields only started six games last season. But in those six games, he showed much better ball security and was on pace to have the best passing statistics of his career. He was also on track to about match his 657 rushing yards from 2023. If Fields takes another step in his development with the Jets, he could be a fringe QB1 in eight-team leagues. It's an odd-numbered year. That means fantasy managers can trust the Cowboys quarterback. Dating back to 2019, Prescott has put together very strong fantasy seasons every other year. He eclipsed the 4,500-yard mark in 2019, 2021 and 2023. Prescott also had at least 30 passing touchdowns in all three of those campaigns. The even-numbered years have been a different story. Prescott led the NFL in interceptions during 2022. Last season, he only played eight games because of injury, throwing 11 touchdowns and eight picks. Prescott is a boom or bust candidate more than a sleeper. But because of the risk associated with drafting him, the Cowboys quarterback is the No. 15 fantasy signal-caller according to Fantasy Pros. If he plays as he did in 2023, Prescott will outplay that ranking. Arguably the first true sleeper for 12-team leagues on our list, Michael Penix Jr. has risen local expectations. But nationally, pundits are still only lukewarm, at best, on the Falcons signal-caller. According to Fantasy Pros, he's the No. 24-ranked fantasy QB. Penix's statistcs from his three starts last season don't jump off the page. He averaged 7.4 yards per pass with a 58.1% completion percentage, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Penix also didn't face any elite defense in his three starts. But he passed the eye test and built a strong connection with Falcons receiver Drake London in just a handful of games. During the season finale, Penix threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns versus the Carolina Panthers. Managers should target Penix in the late rounds after already grabbing a QB1. If he develops as the Falcons expect, Penix could be worthy of starting lineup consideration by the second half of the season. It's hard to call a four-time MVP a "sleeper," but that's what the 41-year-old signal-caller is as Fantasy Pros' No. 28 quarterback entering training camp. Despite his age, Rodgers should be more mobile another year removed from his 2023 Achilles injury. That could lead to a more vintage Rodgers than what fantasy managers saw in 2024. If Pittsburgh executes its plan of playing strong defense and a more efficient running game in 2025, Rodgers could capitalize with more efficiency as well. In 2024, Rodgers completed 63% of his passes for 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. Rodgers isn't going to be an MVP candidate like four years ago. But he could offer better quality than the last few seasons, which could make him valuable as a potential QB2 in two-quarterback formats.
