Young driver who'd just passed test hit and killed 'amazing' grandfather on zebra crossing

Young driver who'd just passed test hit and killed 'amazing' grandfather on zebra crossing Driver Dima Sarafa, 20, was said to be 'hysterical' and 'crying and throwing up' at the roadside as the victim was treated for injuries he never recovered from Philip Jones (Image: South Wales Police ) A driver who had recently passed her test struck and killed a 73-year-old man as he was walking across a zebra crossing. The victim suffered severe head injuries including a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, and died in hospital three months later. Dima Sarafa, 20, killed Philip Jones on January 6, 2023, after he had alighted from a bus moments earlier and was making his way across the road. She was later described as "hysterical" and "crying and throwing up" at the side of the road as the victim was treated. ‌ A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday heard Mr Jones had stepped off a bus in Llanedeyrn Drive in Cardiff and after exchanging pleasantries with a dog walker, he walked towards a zebra crossing. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter. ‌ The defendant was on her lunch break and was returning to work at a dental practice as she drove in a southerly direction on Llanedeyrn Drive in her Ford Fiesta. Mr Jones began to cross the zebra crossing when he was struck by Sarafa's car, which did not appear to brake before the collision. The dog walker did not witness the collision but described hearing a "thud and bang". He turned around and saw the car stopping and Mr Jones on the floor towards the back of the car. Article continues below It was clear the victim had injuries to his head and there was blood on the floor, the court heard. Sarafa could be heard repeatedly saying to Mr Jones that he was not on the zebra crossing. A witness on a bus described seeing the defendant crying and throwing up, and described her as "hysterical" and was heard saying "I didn't see him". There were a number of people surrounding Mr Jones and attempting to assist him. A passing physiotherapist attempted to open Mr Jones' airways while an off duty nurse monitored his blood saturation and pulse, and the victim's ex-wife also attended the scene having been in the shopping centre nearby. ‌ Mr Jones was taken to the University Hospital of Wales and was found to have suffered a wound to the back of his head, a right leg injury, a skull fracture and extensive bleeding on the surface and within the brain. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Mr Jones died as a result of his head injuries on April 11, 2023. The defendant was spoken to by police and was described as "distressed". She was tested for drugs and alcohol, which were negative, and her phone was examined. ‌ A forensic collision investigation revealed there would have been a glare in the driver's vision at the time of the collision, but she would have been able to see a pedestrian in the road. It was also discovered the Fiesta was driving between 24mph to 25mph in a 20mph zone at the time of the collision, and there was no evidence of braking until the point of impact. Prosecutor Byron Broadstock said the defendant had only passed her test three months before the collision. ‌ Sarafa, of Clos Hector, Pengam Green, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving. The court heard she was of previous good character. Reading her own victim personal statement to the court, Mr Jones' daughter, Beverly Jones, said: "I'd like to tell you a little bit about our dad Philip Jones and the person he was. Difficult, stubborn, cantankerous, and fiercely protective of our family. He'd put everyone before himself, was well liked in the community and went out of his way for neighbours. There was nothing he wouldn't do for us... "On January 6, 2023, when we received the call to say our dad had been hit by a car our lives as a family changed forever. From the initial shock, rushing to the emergency unit, waiting hours for an update and the endless hours of pacing the hospital corridors. In the trauma unit we visited at every opportunity. ‌ "Eventually, after months of watching him in distress, crying and calling out for his parents who had passed away when we were children and asking for his daughters when we were sat there with him, we were told nothing more could be done and he would be moved to palliative care. "From then on for the next week we were at his bedside, watching and waiting until he took his last breath. In those three-and-a-half months of hospital visits, my sister's birthday, my nephew's 21st, and my dad's birthday all went uncelebrated. We never got to speak to him again, from the day he was hit he didn't know who we were or recognise us... "Since the accident we were merely existing as a family. The stress and anxiety we have had has had a far reaching impact on us all... Why, why didn't he come home. He simply went out to do a weekly shop... That day took part of who we were and I am not sure we will ever return to the people we were before. I'm not sure I remember what that looks like... ‌ "We as a family have never been out for revenge, we only want justice. We need you to acknowledge while out driving you had a responsibility to concentrate and focus at all times, no matter how familiar a journey it was and no matter how good a driver you thought you were. "You will go on to live a long life and we hope you use that time to reflect on what you did and use it in a positive way to educate other younger drivers how one moment of inattention can have such far reaching and devastating consequences... "(Our dad) was amazing and we miss him every day. You raised us well dad and we will always strive to make you proud." ‌ In mitigation, Andrew Taylor said his client had not driven since the collision and described it as a "truly, truly tragic case". The barrister said this was a case of "inexperience" rather than irresponsibility and described the defendant as "devastated" to think she had caused the loss of Mr Jones' life. Sentencing, Judge Paul Hobson said: "(Mr Jones) was a father and grandfather who was much loved by his family. He had a full life to live and was living that life until that day in January. It's plain from all I have read, Mr Jones was utterly blameless for what took place, the responsibility for this collision lies entirely and squarely on you... ‌ "The sentence I impose today cannot be any measure of what Mr Jones' full and cherished life is worth, no sentence can ever be." Sarafa was sentenced to nine months imprisonment suspended for 18 months. She was ordered to carry out a 10 day rehabilitation activity requirement, to perform 200 hours unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for 12 months. Article continues below

When No Boring Cars Goes too Far: Ford's (NYSE:F) Race to Make Everything Exciting

One of the major dogmas that seems to be driving legacy automaker Ford (F) these days is 'no boring cars.' And indeed, Ford seems to be sticking to that pretty hard. It has removed several cars from its lineup, including, among others, the Fusion, the Focus, the Fiesta and the Taurus. There are reports that the Ford Escape, Ford's smallest SUV, is also on track for removal. And the question that is starting to rise in some quarters is whether or not Ford's pursuit of only exciting cars is, perhaps, going too far. Confident Investing Starts Here: Certainly, Ford has many exciting cars going for it right now. It has been ramping up efforts on its Ford Mustang line, including the Mustang electric vehicle series. Indeed, not so long ago, Ford rolled out a new kind of battery technology that is likely to improve its electric vehicle concepts, the lithium manganese rich (LMR) system. This kind of technological development is likely to prove helpful in getting Ford vehicles to be more regularly considered by drivers. Ford has other improvements as well; the BlueCruise system is doing quite well, with service now up and running on over 130,000 miles of highway in the United States. This brings us closer to the dream of complete hands-free operation. And while BlueCruise itself is only a level 2 system, meaning that a human driver must be in place and ready to intervene as needed, that is still a significant step up from where we were. Even Ford Pro is seeing some potential gains from Ford's increased infatuation with high tech. A report from back in March suggested that Ford could end up with an automated loading system for its delivery vehicles. That could be a huge win for any parcel delivery service or catering operation; being able to automatically load a vehicle means potential cost and time savings, depending on how the system is executed. Jetsons or Terminator? But not all of Ford's advances are wins. After all, like we said, the BlueCruise system is still a level 2 system. That means, as noted previously, it needs constant human oversight. That does not make it bad, but it does make it less than optimal. The automated loading system in Ford Pro vehicles could also be an issue; anything that increases complexity also increases potential failure risk; there are simply more moving parts and more potential points of failure. This may be a universal condition, but it is still an issue nonetheless. Even some of Ford's current advances are having issues. The SYNC 4 infotainment system, for example, has an unexpectedly substantial failure rate. A major update came out back in late February to address this matter, which at least demonstrates Ford's eagerness to fix whatever problems it may have. It is an issue that speaks to reliability, and in some cases, safety. So far, Ford has issued over 40 different recalls, from small ones impacting only a handful of vehicles—one recall was geared toward just three cars—all the way up to major ones impacting fractions of millions. But with over 40 recalls so far this year, and 2024—already regarded as a bad year for recalls—having just 64 in the entire year—it is looking like Ford's fascination with exciting cars is leading to some cars that are exciting for all the wrong reasons. Is Ford Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on F stock based on two Buys, 12 Holds and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 12.65% loss in its share price over the past year, the average F price target of $9.71 per share implies 6.9% downside risk.

Spurs to get new jerseys next season

Spurs to get new jerseys next season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Antonio Spurs have one of the most iconic jerseys in the NBA. They aren't flashy, they aren't bold, but the Silver and Black is synonymous with winning. Advertisement The Spurs, according to Basketball Jersey Archive, will get a redesign before next season, joining the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers. The Spurs, last season, had four jerseys. Their Association and Icon, which were white and black with a classic "Spurs" across the chest, the "City Editions," with the icy light blue that paid homage to the Hemisphere, and the Statement edition, with a bold "SATX" across the chest and small homages to the Latin American poulation up and down the jersey and shorts. The expectation is that the Statement addition will be the one replaced, and fans are urging the team to return to the Fiesta colorway of the 1990s that has been featured in recent years. The Spurs have also been encouraged to go back to the classic black on black from the George Gervin era, which they paid homage to two seasons ago. Fans would likely prefer to see some Alamo imagery on the jerseys, although the State of Texas does not typically sign off on officially licensed merchandise, preventing the Spurs from leaning into the motif. Advertisement With the popularity in recent years of throwbacks and Fiesta colorways, the Spurs are expected to abandon the black "SATX" jerseys and lean into something a bit bolder. Ford's Hot Hatch Is Now Officially History

The end is here for Ford's last hot hatch as the company confirmed to Motor1 that every factory build slot for the Focus ST is spoken for. "All Focus ST factory orders until the end of production have now been reserved," European communications manager Finn Thomasen said. Dealers across the Continent may still have a few unclaimed cars hiding in back lots, but once those are gone-and when Focus production stops in November-the book will officially close on Ford's 45-year hot-hatch chapter. The Focus joins a growing list of Ford passenger cars already in the rear-view mirror. The Fiesta bowed out in 2023, the Mondeo in 2022, and the tiny Ka back in 2020. Without them, Ford's European portfolio is dominated by crossovers such as the Puma and Kuga. The shift has taken a bite out of sales: through April, Ford moved 149,601 vehicles in the EU, U.K., and EFTA markets-down 2.2% year-over-year and less than a third of Volkswagen's haul over the same period. Even Hyundai and Kia have pulled ahead, underscoring how much ground Ford has ceded without its affordable hatchbacks. Yes, the seventh-generation Mustang still flies the performance flag, but it's hardly a volume play. EU taxes punish engines bigger than two liters, dogging the 5.0-liter V-8, while the smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost was pulled from European order books at the end of 2020. The pony car, therefore, lives on as a niche halo, not a substitute for the daily-drivable, budget-friendly thrills once delivered by ST-badged Fiestas and Focuses. Whether Ford ever revisits the hot-hatch formula likely depends on batteries, not boost pressure. Former Ford of Europe boss-now VW sales chief-Martin Sanders has hinted that the Blue Oval could tap further into Volkswagen's MEB electric platform, the foundation for the forthcoming Explorer and Capri EVs. VW has already promised an electric GTI; a battery-fueled Fiesta ST or Focus ST revival isn't unthinkable if the economics line up. For now, though, enthusiasts must look to the used market or pivot to rival brands still flying the internal-combustion hot-hatch flag. The Fiesta Supersport of 1980 lit the fuse; the Escort RS, Fiesta XR2, and decades of ST variants kept the fire roaring. With the Focus ST's curtain call, the combustion-powered Ford hot hatch becomes history. What replaces it, if anything, will almost certainly hum rather than howl. Until that day arrives, the faithful will remember the glory years and, if they're lucky, snag one of the last STs before they're gone. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
