Defenceman Emmerdahl back for Flyers

Swedish defenceman Jonas Emmerdahl returns for a sixth season with Fife Flyers and bosses believe he will anchor the squad's defence. He's the fourth signing by the new ownership and the 33-year-old is delighted to have clinched a deal for another season at Kirkcaldy. He added: 'I've been here for a while now so can almost call Fife my second home. I have seen the huge potential that this club has. 'It's exciting times ahead and I want to be a part of it.' Max Birbraer, Flyers' president and general manager, said: 'The first thing that comes to mind when you watch Jonas play and speak to him is his professionalism. 'He leads by example on and off the ice. His mature hockey sense, being hard to play against and making the right plays under pressure will anchor our defensive core.' Emmerdahl first arrived in the Kingdom at the beginning of the 2019/20 season but he played for a third tier German club at the start of last term before answering the call from then bosses of the struggling team. Described as a two-way defenceman with good hockey sense Jonas has logged 65 points (19 goals and 48 assists) across 248 Elite League games and he joins Shane Owen, Mason Alderson and Scottish-born utility player, Ben Brown, a product of Dundee Stars' junior development programme, in the squad. Alderson puts pen to paper for Flyers

London-born Mason Alderson has become Fife Flyers second signing under the new regime at The Fife Ice Arena. The British forward comes to the Kingdom following a two year, two-way stint between National Ice Hockey League side Solway Sharks and Elite League Champions, Belfast Giants. He has logged three appearances for Giants. The 23-year-old registered more than a point a game icing for Sharks last term, registering 21 goals and 28 assists in 43 appearances for the Dumfries side. And 6ft 3in Alderson said he is excited to be joining the Flyers. The player added: 'From what I've heard, it's a great organisation with a passionate fan base and a rich hockey history. I just can't wait to get started and play in front of the Flyers faithful.' He joins highly-rated netminder, Shane Owen, in the line-up and he started his career playing junior hockey between Romford, Guildford and Chelmsford. He then moved to North America, joining the National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) side Islanders Hockey Club ahead of the 2018/19 season. Alderson went on to represent Berwick Academy, Hoosac School, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights and Castleton University before making the switch back to Britain. The Great Britain under-18 and under-20 player has accumulated 28 points in 20 appearances for his country. Included in those statistics are impressive numbers in 2018 when he was part of the under-18 Championship, Division II, Group A, winning side during the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World tournament in Estonia. He led the team in scoring with nine points (six goals and three assists) in five games and he was voted the tournament's best forward. Alderson was then named Great Britain's captain at the 2019 IIHF World under-18 Championship, Division I, Group B, tournament in Hungary. Max Birbraer, Flyers' president and general manager, said: 'When we heard Mason was still available we made an immediate move as it's absolutely vital for us to start building a core of British players and re-establishing ourselves as a balanced group. 'Mason is a young, talented, hard-nosed player who is an absolute pain in the opposition's back side. He fits our team template perfectly.' PICTURE: Alderson (right) in action for Belfast v Fife. Russell aims to take Fife Flyers to new heights

Fife Flyers have named their new coach. He's Canadian Jamie Russell and the instructions from bosses are simple: 'Build a winning team.' The 58-year-old, who has never coached in Britain, has also been told to energise the locker room and take the Kirkcaldy club to new heights. Flyers say the Kamloops-born playcaller has a wealth of coaching experience spread across North American college leagues, the rough-tough East Coast Hockey League and in the Slovak Extraliga. His most recent appointment was in the Alps Hockey League with Rittner Buam who faced off against the Cardiff Devils in the third round group stage of the 2024/25 IIHF Continental Cup. Rittner Buam also won the Italian Supercup Championship last season and Russell said: 'The new ownership group has been outstanding in developing a vision to return the Flyers to a level of pride and excellence. 'Max Birbraer is a legend in the Elite League (EIHL), and his leadership will guide us to new heights.' Russell added: 'We are building a roster that will reflect the values you will find in the community of Kirkcaldy. We will attack games with an unyielding work ethic and passion. 'You will see players that have pride in pulling on the Flyers sweater and we intend to make the Fife Ice Arena one of the most challenging places to play in the league.' The home team will, he declared, be known for its speed, grit and relentless style of hockey. Max Birbraer (correct), the club's general manager (GM), revealed that from the first conversation with Russell he felt they were on the same page, not only about how hockey should be played, but the type of team we would like to build in Fife. The Kazakhastan-born Israel international forward added: 'We both felt that this is a tremendous opportunity of having a blank canvas where we can put our own stamp on. 'The fact that Jamie has successfully undergone a full re-build process several times in his extensive career holds huge value as that's exactly what is happening here in the Kingdom of Fife. 'As an associate GM, coach Russell has the creative power of putting together a team which reflects the identity of what truly is a hockey town, hard work, passion, fearlessness, they are just some of the building blocks of our new identity. 'We are planning to balance this with skill and entertainment which we think is a winning formula in terms of giving our diehard supporters the match night experience they deserve. 'During the due diligence process, one common theme kept coming through, Jamie is a true leader.' Birbraer had a message for the club's success-hungry fans: 'Get behind this team and fly together.'
