Driver escapes with minor injuries as MPV plunges into river

ALOR SETAR: A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) plunged into a river near Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB) last night. The 41-year-old driver, however, escaped with only minor injuries. The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre said it received a distress call about the incident at 8.01pm. A team from the Alor Setar Fire and Rescue Station, led by Senior Fire Officer II Roslan Saad and comprising six personnel, was dispatched to the scene. "The Kedah operations command centre received an emergency call via the MERS 999 line, reporting that a Toyota Alphard had skidded and plunged into the river. "The victim was rescued and brought to a safe location for treatment," the department said in a statement. The victim was later taken to HSB. The operation concluded at 8.52pm. It is understood that the stretch of road near the river has seen multiple accidents, with vehicles reportedly plunging into the water in past incidents.

MUAR, July 15 (Bernama) -- What was initially thought to be one of a man's usual jokes took a worrying turn for his family when his vehicle was found in Sungai Tui along Jalan Bukit Kepong here today. Motoring influencer Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin, 38, better known as Ija Nizaruddin, was reported missing after the Perodua Axia he was driving was found submerged in the river this evening, with no trace of him inside. His younger brother, Tengku Abdul Aziz, 30, said they last met around 2 pm yesterday after travelling separately from Johor Bahru to Muar. 'We left Johor Bahru in separate vehicles for business purposes. I went to a different place, while my brother told me he wanted to go to his friend's workshop in Parit Jawa. 'My family last heard from him at around 4 pm, but after that, they couldn't reach him,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said both he and his sister-in-law reached out to the workshop owner but were told that his brother never showed up. 'At first, we thought he was joking as usual, but started to get worried when we couldn't reach him and the vehicle was found not far from where we last met,' he said. Earlier, Pagoh Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer I Nor Alfatah Omar said they received an emergency call about the incident at 3.22 pm. He said the team arrived at the scene at about 3.51 pm and discovered that a Perodua Axia had plunged into a river about two metres deep.

IPOH, July 15 (Bernama) -- Two Chinese nationals were killed while a local driver was injured after their car skidded while trying to avoid a lorry at KM316.9 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) last night. Tapah police chief Supt Johari Yahya said police were alerted to the incident at 10.30 pm, and the deceased, identified as Chong Hong and Yucheng Pan, both 41, died at the scene due to severe head injuries. The driver of the Toyota Vios, Lau Yong Kheng, 56, sustained injuries to his neck, legs and arms. 'Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang in the right lane, had tried to avoid a lorry that changed lanes in front of it, causing the driver to lose control. 'Efforts are ongoing to trace the lorry driver and obtain dashboard camera footage to assist in the investigation,' he said in a statement today. The bodies of the deceased were sent to Tapah Hospital for post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Meanwhile, Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the department received an emergency call at 8.53 pm, and a team from the Tapah Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene. He said the victims were found trapped inside the vehicle, and rescuers used special equipment to extricate them before handing them over to Health Ministry personnel and police for further action. -- BERNAMA

GEORGE TOWN: Four people were injured, three of them with serious injuries, after the Perodua Alza they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a river along Jalan York here today. They are believed to be members of the same family. Penang Fire and Rescue Department Operations Division assistant director John Sagun Francis said they received an emergency call about the incident at 3.24pm. A team from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene. "Upon arriving at 3.41pm, our team found all the victims trapped inside the vehicle, which had plunged into the river. "Rescue operations were carried out immediately using specialised equipment. "The team successfully extricated all the victims by around 4pm," he said in a statement today. John said all the victims received initial treatment from medical personnel before being taken to the nearest hospital for further care. "The operation concluded at 4.03pm after ensuring the area was safe," he added.

KOTA KINABALU: A 58-year-old woman was killed while her husband sustained injuries in a fire that destroyed their grocery store and vehicle in Kampung Nangoh, Telupid, about 300km east of Kota Kinabalu. The fire broke out around 9.23am on Friday (June 20), prompting a response from the Beluran Fire and Rescue Station, located some 77km away. Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Rahmat Rudat said the blaze engulfed a 15-by-40-foot non-permanent structure that also stored 200-litre petrol drums and LPG gas cylinders. 'A Toyota Hilux Single Cab parked at the premises was also completely destroyed. The fire consumed 100% of the shop and vehicle,' he said in a statement on Sunday. The fire was brought under control by 1.50pm and fully extinguished three minutes later, using an open water source with one hose line spanning 200 feet. The 60-year-old male victim had been rushed to the hospital before the fire team arrived, while the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her remains were handed over to the police for further action. Rahmat added that there was no radio communication or mobile phone coverage during the operation.
