Jimmy John's readies two Winnipeg links in sandwich chain
Turkey Tom is prepping for his move to Winnipeg. Until last year, sandwich chain Jimmy John's franchises were found solely in the United States. It's since been expanding within Canada — and at least two locations could open in Winnipeg this fall. Posters displaying sandwiches — perhaps not the Turkey Tom, but meaty options — plaster 1740 Pembina Hwy. and 1430 Ellice Ave. Both sites were construction zones Monday. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Jimmy John's, a U.S. sandwich chain, is opening in Winnipeg at 1430 Ellice Ave. Jimmy John's stayed mum on details but confirmed 'several' eateries are planned. Autumn could bring opening dates, the company shared. It will release more information nationally in upcoming weeks. Last year, the chain's parent company, Inspire Brands LLC, announced it would use a franchise model for a Canadian expansion. Just one Canadian location has launched thus far, in Toronto. 'I think this is a good fit for our local community looking for more restaurants,' said Sijie Sun, a University of Manitoba marketing professor. He asks his students to choose brands they'd like to bring to Winnipeg for a class project; Jimmy John's is often mentioned, Sun said. The Illinois-based company started in 1983 with four sandwich types. It now counts more than 2,000 stores and a slate of choices, including 'unwiches,' where buns are swapped for lettuce exteriors. The Winnipeg market will be competitive, Sun noted: Subway, Firehouse Subs and Tim Hortons are among the big sandwich-selling chains already in town. 'If there's more options, definitely people try the new one,' Sun said, adding brands create loyal customers. He's noticed American-born chains advertising local leadership at their Winnipeg hubs as a U.S.-Canada trade war persists. Grocery stores are labelling Canadian products as shoppers turn from U.S. imports. Jimmy John's will likely highlight its own connection with Canada, Sun said. 'I think this is a good fit for our local community looking for more restaurants.'–Sijie Sun 'You almost wonder, is this a good time (to come)?' added Wenlong Yuan, the Stu Clark chair in entrepreneurship and innovation at the U of M. 'Are they going to be damaged because of this political issue?' Arby's and Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers locations opened within the past four months, amid a 'Buy Canadian' push. Arby's ran out of meat on its first day due to demand; Freddy's was met with great anticipation. It's 'really hard to tell' whether companies are being stunted by a Canada-first sentiment, Yuan stated. U.S. chains including Krispy Kreme and Firehouse Subs have arrived in Winnipeg over the past 1.5 years. Winnipeg's size and diverse population can be a draw for businesses wanting to try operating in Canada, Yuan said. Franchisees may be locals wanting to bring the brand home or they may have experienced Winnipeg via family and friends. Inspire Brands tapped Foodtastic Inc., a Canadian franchisor, to expand Jimmy John's across Canada. Inspire Brands houses labels like Arby's, Baskin-Robbins, Buffalo Wild Wings and Dunkin'. Foodtastic counted more than 1,100 restaurants in January 2024 — the month of the deal's announcement — and $1.1 billion in sales. The Montreal-based company umbrellas Freshii, Second Cup Café and Pita Pit, among others. Jimmy John's Toronto location opened in November 2024. In September and October, the chain unrolled in El Salvador and South Korea. In Winnipeg, it's taking a former Urban Barn space off Ellice Avenue. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Jimmy John's is also opening a location at 1-1740 Pembina Hwy. 'I think another restaurant always brings in more people to the area,' said Desiree Rafael, an employee at neighbouring Acuity Vision Care. 'If they see that there is an optometry practice by where they're eating, then maybe they'll be inclined to come get their eyes checked.' The Jimmy John's off Pembina Highway replaces a Macao Imperial Tea. Jimmy John's wouldn't comment on whether more Manitoba shops are coming. Redberry Restaurants, parent company of sandwich brand Jersey Mike's Subs, said in January 2024 it aimed to open 300 Canadian locations by 2034. Redberry Restaurants didn't respond to questions about Winnipeg plans by print deadline. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. Elgin News Digest: Carpentersville police officers lauded for saving a life with AED; Elgin Summer Theatre to present ‘Wizard of Oz' at Hemmens
Three Carpentersville police officers who used an AED device to save the life of a 40-year-old man in August 2024 are being celebrated on the Firehouse Subs Foundation website. According to the post, the officers found the man unconscious and not breathing. They used CPR and an AED defibrillator to help revive him and keep him alive so he could be taken to a local hospital. Carpentersville Police Chief Todd Shaver said the incident happened in the 1600 block of Seminole Lane. The officers who saved the man's life were Jose Chamorro, Ryan Miles and Nick Valzano. Each was recognized by the Carpentersville Fire Department with a Life Saving Award at an awards banquet earlier this year. In 2023, the village received a donation of $23,979 from Firehouse Subs for lifesaving equipment, which allowed the department to purchase AEDs, Shaver said. Elgin Summer Theatre's production of 'The Wizard of Oz' will be presented by the Up And Coming Theatre Company and the city of Elgin at The Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. Shows will be presented at 7:30 p.m. July 11-12 and 18-19 and at 3 p.m. July 13 and 20, according to the city of Elgin's website. The musical is a stage adaptation of the classic 1939 movie, which is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.' Songs from the movie, including 'Over the Rainbow' and 'We're Off to See the Wizard,' will be part of the show. Tickets are $24 and $30 and can be purchased at To show its appreciation for the community's support, the Food for Greater Elgin food pantry will hold an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, July 11, at its Elgin warehouse at 1553 Commerce Drive. The 'Open Doors, Full Hearts' event will feature behind-the-scenes tours of the facility, light refreshments and a chance to meet volunteers and staff, according to the nonprofit's website. Attendees will vote on their favorites in various categories without knowing which brewer produced what beer, according to the club's website. The event will feature beers from 11 breweries as well as food for purchase from No Manches and Duke's Blues-N-BBQ, a social media post said. Proceeds will help support Rotary programs, including those that provide winter coats for kids in need, fund scholarships and assist local food pantries. Tickets are $38.10 and can be purchased at

Is This Overlooked and Cheap Dividend Stock a Buy Now?
Restaurant Brands International (QSR) has a dividend yield of 3.7% and is trading at a discount to its historical valuations. Despite being one of the largest fast-food chains with a presence in over 120 countries, QSR is an overlooked name. In this article, we'll examine whether the stock is a buy for dividend investors given its healthy dividend yield. To begin with, let's understand QSR's business. The company was formed in late 2014 when Burger King and Tim Hortons merged. In 2017, it added Popeye's to its fold, and in 2021, it acquired Firehouse Subs. Apart from these four segments, QSR also has an International segment. It also separately reports the results of Carrols Burger King restaurants and the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (PLK) China restaurants under the Restaurant Holdings segment. Earlier this year, the company acquired the remaining equity in Burger King China and has held that business for sale as it seeks a new controlling shareholder. 3 Dividend Growth Stocks To Buy and Hold Forever Is This Overlooked and Cheap Dividend Stock a Buy Now? Get exclusive insights with the FREE Barchart Brief newsletter. Subscribe now for quick, incisive midday market analysis you won't find anywhere else. Tim Hortons is the company's biggest segment by revenue, but is also the slowest growing. Popeyes and Firehouse Subs both delivered double-digit organic revenue growth last year, but the growth is coming from a low base. The International segment also achieved nearly 10% revenue growth last year. While QSR is not exactly a growth name, it is also not a business that's past its peak, as is often the case with high dividend stocks. Despite the expected weak start to the year, the company is optimistic about delivering organic adjusted operating income growth of 'at least 8%' this year. Last year, Restaurant Brands unveiled its five-year growth outlook that targets annual sales growth of 8%, which includes 3% organic sales growth and 5% net restaurant growth. The company is also targeting an average annual adjusted operating income (AOI) growth of over 8% over the period. Analysts are modelling earnings growth of 10.2% this year and 8.2% in 2026. Dividends rank quite high in QSR's capital allocation policy, and the company's intent is 'consistently growing its dividend with earnings," targeting a payout ratio between 40%-60% over the long term. Last year's payout ratio was higher than the targeted range as the company increased its dividend despite the fall in earnings. While Restaurant Brands' dividend yield looks mouthwatering, the dividend growth has been quite tepid, and the payout has increased at an annualized pace of 3.6% over the last five years. Moreover, the stock's capital gains have been modest at best, and even after accounting for dividends, its long-term returns trail the S&P 500 Index ($SPX). Of the 27 analysts covering QSR, 17 rate it as a 'Strong Buy' and one as a 'Moderate Buy.' Eight analysts rate the stock as a 'Hold,' while 1 as a 'Moderate Sell.' It has a mean target price of $76.70, which is 14.3% higher than the June 16 closing price. QSR trades at a forward price-earnings (P/E) multiple of 18.3x, which is a discount to what the stock has historically traded at. It also trades at a discount to other companies in the industry, including McDonald's (MCD), Starbucks (SBUX), and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). The stock's dividend yield is also higher than the industry average. While QSR has a stable business that continues to generate healthy cash flows, its debt levels can be concerning for some, given the high debt-equity ratio of 2.83x. The company has been growing inorganically and last year acquired Carrols Restaurant Group, which was the largest Burger King franchisee in the U.S. These acquisitions have added to the company's debt pile. As for buying QSR stock, the stock wouldn't appeal to a growth investor. However, the stock would fit the bill for someone seeking a high dividend stock and is comfortable with modest stock price appreciation over the medium term, with relative safety. The stock's valuations look reasonable, and there is scope for re-rating if the company can deliver on the long-term algorithmic growth that it has outlined.
