Mayor promises interlocking concrete block fix for bad roads
1 2 Kolkata: The civic body has decided to lay interlocking concrete blocks on stretches of roads that frequently develop craters during monsoon. To start with, stretches of CR Avenue and Amherst Street will be paved with the concrete blocks. Mayor Firhad Hakim said the decision to use the interlocking concrete blocks was taken at the MIC meeting on Wednesday. The concrete blocks, while costing several times more than the conventional bitumen repairs, last longer as they do not get corroded by water. In the city, parts of some roads have already been paved with these blocks, including MG Road in Haridevpur. Also, portions of the road around raw water sources in various parts of central and north Kolkata, where people bathe, have also been paved with these blocks. A long stretch of Rajarhat Road has similar paving. This is leading to fresh craters and potholes. For a permanent solution, we have decided to put interlocking concrete blocks that will make the road surfaces more durable. I have asked the roads department and PWD to reschedule their repair work accordingly," said Hakim. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like $30K Goes a Long Way in This Clementi Condo squarerooms Read More Undo With two months to go for Durga Puja, the mayor assured that repairs using both bitumen and interlocking concrete blocks would be complete before the festival. 127-year-old Roxy Cinema of Kolkata to be restored
Kolkata, Jul 23 (PTI) The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and CREDAI Kolkata have joined hands to restore the 127-year-old Roxy Cinema, a heritage landmark near New Market. Roxy, a single-screen theatre, had started as an opera house in 1908 before transforming into a cinema theatre in 1941. In the past, KMC had restored two other theatres — Star and Minerva. According to an MoU, CREDAI Kolkata, which represents developers across Kolkata and adjoining districts, has pledged Rs 5 crore towards the renovation. The realtors' body will primarily fund the interior restoration of the Art Deco-style building through a city-based architecture firm, while KMC will oversee the external civil work and monitor restoration under its Heritage Committee's guidance. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim lauded the effort as a 'noble initiative to restore the city's built heritage," appreciating CREDAI's active participation. 'We are happy to see our members step up for a landmark like Roxy, and we hope this collaboration creates a lasting impact," he said. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 19:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. After Patipukur, civic body wants to lift city's lowest-lying areas above floodwater level
1 2 Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) sewerage and drainage department has decided to expedite the construction of the Hrishikesh Park drainage pumping station. The civic body hopes to make it functional, at least partially, by Sept, keeping in mind the prolonged monsoon that may extend up to the middle of Oct. According to a KMC sewerage and drainage department official, the new drainage pumping station will have five heavy-duty pumps to combat waterlogging in the traditionally low-lying and waterlogging-prone zones, including Amherst Street, Thanthania and Muktarambabu Street. "Out of these five pumps, we will try to install at least a couple by Sept to make the pumping station partially functional before Durga Puja. The entire pumping station will be inaugurated next year," said a civic official. According to a KMC sewerage and drainage department official, when completed, the drainage pumping station will take care of the waterlogging woes of residents of Thanthania, Muktarambabu Street, Amherst Street, Sukeas Street, Keshab Sen Street, parts of Bidhan Sarani, and Chittaranjan Avenue. The official said that the existing small drainage pumping station is not capable of handling the load of the vast stretches of north Kolkata. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 짙어지는 기미, 이렇게 집에서 하니 해결되더라구요 에스테틱최원장 Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim gave the go-ahead to this project as he was told that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as mayor of Kolkata, had stressed the need for draining storm water from these parts of north Kolkata and giving residents relief from inundation. According to Sayantan Ghosh, a resident of Amherst Street, the drainage pumping station was the need of the hour as the entire Amherst Street and its adjacent neighbourhoods go underwater after a downpour. "We have been suffering due to waterlogging for years. Hope the construction of the new drainage pumping station is completed in time and we get rid of the waterlogging woes," said Ghosh. Sajal Gupta, a trader who resides on Muktarambabu Street, expressed hope that the proposed drainage pumping station will bring relief to their day-to-day life during monsoons. "Every monsoon, whenever it rains heavily, we get stranded at home. My business suffers a lot as I can't open my shop. We welcome the initiative being taken by the civic authorities for mitigating waterlogging woes. I hope there is relief at the earliest," said Gupta. A KMC drainage department official said the civic brass has sanctioned Rs 60 crore for setting up the drainage pumping station at Hrishikesh Park.
