Deputy Commissioner stresses need for robust market for fish produced in Mandya

Deputy Commissioner of Mandya, Kumar, has emphasised the need to create a robust market for the 30,000 tonnes of fish produced annually in the district and encourage fish farming. Presiding over the district-level committee's meeting of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) 2025-26, organised by the Fisheries Department in Mandya on Tuesday, Mr. Kumar said the district had a total of 856 lakes, including 177 under the department's purview and 688 under that of the gram panchayats. In addition, fish farming was carried out in 26 river stretches and four reservoirs in the district. While 306 lakes were developed during 2024-25, Mr. Kumar said Mandya district had a total of 47 fishermen's co-operative societies and more than 45,000 fishermen. Emphasising the need for better training in fisheries, Mr. Kumar said a total of 742 beneficiaries had been identified under the PMMSY during the last five years, while financial assistance of ₹513.38 lakh had been provided to 150 beneficiaries under the scheme. During the year 2024-25 alone, financial assistance to the tune of ₹224.21 lakh was provided under the scheme. He emphasised the need for encouraging fish farming in agricultural ponds and called upon the officials to ensure that the beneficiaries were utilising the PMMS effectively. Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Mandya Zilla Panchayat, K.R. Nandini, said the fishermen, who received financial assistance, should undergo training in fish farming techniques. She also emphasised the need to monitor whether beneficiaries were properly utilising the scheme and take necessary action to prevent misuse of funds. Man arrested for stealing turtle eggs at Cherating beach

A man has been arrested while two of his accomplices are being hunted by police after being suspected of involvement in stealing turtle eggs at the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre in Cherating yesterday. Acting Kuantan district police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the 51-year-old suspect was arrested at a house in Cherating around 1pm yesterday, and preliminary urine screening found the man tested positive for drugs. He said police received a report about the incident from the Pahang Fisheries Department around 10am, Sunday (July 27), following a viral video on social media showing three men carrying a turtle at the popular tourist beach. He said investigations found the incident occurred at 7am, the same day, and the three suspects are locals believed to be involved in turtle egg theft activities. 'The viral footage was recorded by a local tourist who came across the three suspects lifting a turtle at the beach. 'The suspects brought the reptile to a hole that had been pre-dug at the beach to speed up the process of the turtle laying eggs. The suspects are believed to have acted in this manner to take the turtle eggs for sale or illegal use,' he said in a statement. Mohd Adli said the identities of the two other suspects being hunted have been identified. 'The arrested suspect will be handed over to the Fisheries Department for further action. 'The case is being investigated under Section 27 of the Fisheries Act 1985, where no one is allowed to fish, disturb, harass, catch or take turtles. If convicted, they can be fined up to RM5,000,' he added. The police action comes after a group of men were recorded lifting a turtle believed to be coming ashore to lay eggs at a beach that went viral on social media, sparking public outrage. Through a two-minute video uploaded on platform X around 11.57pm on Sunday, three men were seen in the sandy area lifting the reptile despite being warned by several other visitors.

New tuna landing port in Penang needs studies, Dewan Rakyat told

KUALA LUMPUR: Proposals to create a new tuna landing port in Penang will require various studies and engagement with stakeholders before a final decision is made, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said his ministry received an application by the Penang state government to set up a new tuna landing port in the state under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) that will be announced this Thursday (July 31). Mohamad said establishing a new tuna landing port in Penang will depend on a feasibility study, a social cost-benefit analysis, a due diligence review, an environmental impact assessment, and engagement with the local fishermen community. 'This is to ensure planning that is more thorough, sustainable and community-centred,' said Mohamad in a parliamentary written reply dated July 28. Mohamad also said the Fisheries Department has applied for development allocation under RMK13 to upgrade fishery landing and handling facilities at Wharf 6, Deep Sea Wharf in Butterworth. 'This project aims to improve the management capacity of deep sea landings such as tuna in a more systematic and competitive manner,' added Mohamad. Presently, the commercial port at the Butterworth deep-water wharf is designated as the tuna landing site. In 2023, 16 vessels landed 177,000kg of tuna, valued at RM3.191mil. Last year, total landings surged, reaching about 433,000kg, with an estimated value of RM7.76mil.

Man held over viral video of turtle mishandling in Cherating

KUANTAN: A 51-year-old man has been detained in connection with a viral video showing three people handling an adult turtle that was attempting to lay eggs on a beach near the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary yesterday. The suspect, who tested positive for drugs, was picked up at his home nearby at about 1pm today. Authorities are still tracking down his two accomplices. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the Pahang Fisheries Department lodged a report at about 10am today after several video clips went viral showing three men disturbing a sea turtle that had come ashore to lay eggs. "Visitors at the beach recorded the men carrying the turtle at around 7am. The men were seen moving the turtle towards a hole they had dug earlier. "Investigations revealed that the men had carried the turtle and dug the hole in an attempt to expedite the egg-laying process. "However, after realising they were being closely watched by a group of visitors, they decided to release the turtle back into the sea," he said in a statement today. Adli said the suspects are believed to have been attempting to collect the turtle eggs for illegal sale or personal use. He said police were able to arrest one of the suspects based on the viral footage and are working closely with the Fisheries Department to locate the remaining two men. Adli said that under Section 27 of the Fisheries Act 1985, it is an offence to fish, disturb, harass, catch, or take any aquatic mammal or turtle, and offenders may be fined up to RM5,000. In the video, three men can be seen trying to carry a turtle that had emerged from the sea before one of them suddenly slips and falls on the sand. A visitor present at the beach is heard telling the men to let the animal go.

GST registration, proper certification: Maharashtra announces fresh guidelines for fish feed procurement

In a move aimed at bolstering the fisheries sector in Maharashtra, the state government Friday announced a fresh set of guidelines for fish feed procurement. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said the new directives are designed to enhance efficiency across fisheries projects while providing a much-needed boost to local feed producers. Currently, a significant portion of fish feed is imported from outside the state. 'This affects quality control and sidelines local manufacturers,' Rane said. 'To address this, the Fisheries Department has decided to implement new procurement norms that prioritise locally registered and government-approved producers.' Under the revised guidelines, all subsidised fisheries projects in Maharashtra will now be required to procure feed exclusively from state-based suppliers who are recognised under central or state schemes, or are otherwise duly registered and subsidised by the government. As per the guidelines, fish feed must be certified by recognised food safety bodies such as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), or the Indian Standards Institution (ISI). The packaging must clearly display key nutritional details — including protein, fat, moisture, and carbohydrates — as well as manufacturing and expiry dates. Suppliers will also be required to provide an official tax invoice and ensure the feed is delivered in sealed, hygienic packaging via clean, dry transportation. GST registration is mandatory for all suppliers, and record-keeping of purchasing farmers will now be compulsory. The minister emphasised that Maharashtra has seen considerable investment in fisheries infrastructure through both central and state support. Projects like fish seed production and conservation centres, cage culture units, biofloc systems, RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems), and nursery ponds, all rely heavily on the availability of high-quality feed. 'The effectiveness and full operational capacity of these initiatives depend largely on the timely supply of nutritious and certified fish feed,' Rane added. Rane also highlighted the government's focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly feed production. 'Any complaints regarding feed quality from farmers or fishers will be taken seriously and addressed promptly,' he assured.
