Fisheries Minister releases fingerlings into Thamirabarani river, ahead of National Fish Farmers' Day
Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan released native species of freshwater carp fingerlings into Thamirabarani river from Srivaikuntam dam, on Thursday, ahead of the National Fish Farmers' Day. Addressing the media, he said that, under a State project aimed at restocking rivers and boosting fish resources across Tamil Nadu, a total of 40 lakh fingerlings were being released into rivers at a cost of ₹1.20 crore for the financial year 2025-2026. The project is being implemented with an objective to significantly increase the income of local fishermen, who rely on rivers as their livelihood he added. 'As part of the project, one lakh fingerlings sized up to 8 to 10 cm, reared at the Government Fish Farm in Manimuthar were released today,' he noted. Furthermore, he noted that several schemes are being implemented by the Fisheries Department to support and protect the local fishermen. One such initiative involves stocking fish in ponds. Fishermen or groups who lease these ponds are allowed to purchase and breed fish, thereby creating livelihood opportunities. He added that following the directive of the Chief Minister, fingerlings are now being released not only in ponds but also in major river beds. Over the past two years, river beds such as Thamirabharani, Bhavani and Cauvery have been restocked, benefiting local fishermen communities in multiple ways. Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath, Joint Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department, Thoothukudi (Division) N. Chandra, and other officials were present.

Minister reviews preparatory measures at Tiruchendur temple
T Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P.K. Sekarbabu on Thursday inspected the preparatory works for the upcoming consecration ceremony at Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple on July 7. The temple has undergone extensive renovation at a cost of ₹300 crore, and the consecration is being conducted after a gap of 15 years. Over 10 lakh devotees are expected to participate in the event. The yagasala puja for the festival commenced on July 1. To ensure a smooth experience for devotees and to improve overall temple infrastructure, several development works have been carried out. As part of the inspection, Mr. Sekarbabu reviewed the new facilities constructed at a cost of ₹24.80 crore. These include a new joint commissioner office within the temple premises, a conference room, locker room, a separate complex for counting the temple's hundi collections, sashti mandapam, first aid centre, CCTV surveillance room, server and UPS room and an electric lift. In addition, he also inspected newly constructed accommodation facilities including four luxury suite rooms, 24 airconditioned rooms, and 24 non-airconditioned rooms, and a 52-room dormitory building. They were built at a cost of ₹10.57 crore and set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on July 4. Mr. Sekarbabu and Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan also participated in the fourth phase of the yagasala puja held in the temple premises. During the ritual, the new gold plated Vimana Kalasam of Lord Shanmuganathar was placed and worshipped. Collector K. Elambahavath, District SP Albert John and other officials were present during the inspection.

New scheme rolled out in 22 villages across Thoothukudi district to benefit farmers, agri sector
Following the launch of 'Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai-Farmers' Welfare' scheme by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Chennai on Thursday, P. Geetha Jeevan, Minister of Social Welfare and Women Environment, highlighted the benefits of the scheme at an event organised at the K. Subramaniyapuram village under the Jegaveerapandiyapuram revenue village of Ottapidaram taluk. Speaking at the even, the minister said that the government had been taking various measures for the benefit of farmers. In line with these efforts, the newly launched the 'Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai-Farmers' Welfare' scheme aims to uplift the agricultural sector and safeguard the farmers' welfare. The scheme has initially been implemented in 22 villages across Thoothukudi district, with two villages selected from each region. She underscored the TN government's efforts to increase agricultural production and enhance farmers income, highlighting the importance of integrating government schemes with modern technologies to benefit the farming community. 'It is noteworthy that in the 'Uzhavarai Thedi Velanmai-Farmers' Welfare' scheme, where officials of the Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, Cooperative departments and scientists from the respective universities will directly visit the farmers and will provide suggestions, assess technological requirements and outline the schemes for them,' noted Ms. Geetha Jeevan. She added that the scheme will eventually be rolled out across 479 villages in Thoothukudi district. Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath, Vilathikulam G.V. Marknadeyan and other officials were present at the event.
